149 th Annual Banquet 2017

The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Cincinnati, Ohio Friday, March 17th, 2017 Netherland Plaza Hotel

The Society of The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick is a private organization dedicated to the principles of brotherhood, charity and community service. Since the founding of the Cincinnati chapter in 1868, the society has maintained a tradition of openness to Irish as well as non-Irish men of goodwill, without regard to ethnic or religious origin.

With God’s blessing we look forward to another century of fraternity and service.

2 History of the Powell Family

The name Powell is usually of Welsh origin and was brought into Ireland by settlers, especially during the seventeenth century. Powell is sometimes used as a synonym of the name Guilfoyle, taken from an ancient Gaelic surname, Mac Giolla Phoil. Phoil is Gaelic for Paul. Giolla as a prefix to any Gaelic name means “servant of” or “devotee of”. Powell therefore when it designates this old Celtic family means “the son of the servant of, St. Paul.”

Other Powell’s who made their homes in Ireland, arrived with the Norman invaders. In due time their descendents, like most of the Norman-Irish families, became “more Irish than the Irish,” and suffered for their loyalty to the Stuart cause by having their lands confiscated and their members dispersed or forced into exile.

Richard Powell and Mary Nolan, were born in County Cork and emigrated to the United States through the port of New York in the 1850’s and eventually settled in the west side of Cincinnati in the early 1860’s.

From the 1860’s through the 1880’s, Richard and Mary raised several children in Green Township, not too far from Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (St. Al’s) in Bridgetown, which opened its doors in 1866. Richard listed his occupation in the 1870 U.S. Census as a Farmer. In the late 1880’s, Richard was an officer in the Green Township Anti-Thieving Protective Association, which would mobilize to catch horse thieves, a real problem when you make your livelihood stabling horses.

3 Richard and Mary had three sons and four daughters. One of their sons, Richard A. Powell was President of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in 1921. He passed the tradition down to two of his nephews, Richard T. Carroll and Robert S. Powell, and they eventually served as President of the Friendly Sons in 1946 and 1954, respectively. Robert S. Powell (“R.S.”), our 1954 President, was also an auto dealer in Bridgetown. He took up residence across the street from where his Grandfather initially settled. R.S., his children, and many of his grandchildren and great- grandchildren were baptized at St. Al’s. In fact, for the past 150+ years, at least one Powell family has always called that parish home. R.S. married Edna Holscher and they had five children: Patricia, Belle, Jerry, Jackie and Robert S. Jr. The daughters all had independent spirits, most likely a trait passed down from their Mother, who routinely hopped on public transport and headed down to the Reds games by herself. Their oldest son Jerry ran successful blacktop and concrete companies in Cheviot for many decades and besides knowing everyone on the west side, also served as President of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in 1972. The baby of the family, Robert S. Jr, married Lois Borgman and they had four children of their own: Mike, Mark, Doug and Melissa. Mike and Mark were born while Bob was serving in the 101st Airborne. After returning home from the Army, Bob and Lois built a house in Bridgetown. They currently reside in Dent. Over the next 10 years, Doug was born, Bob started his own CPA firm and a gap in the family was finally filled when little sister Melissa was born. In 1976, Robert S. Powell Jr. became President of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. Then, in 2009, my brother Doug became the sixth descendent of Richard & Mary to become President of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. Besides expressing my love for my Mother and Father, Brothers and Sister, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins, I must mention how proud I am of my own family, which consists of my wife Judy, along with two children Jessica (Rick) & Aimee (Chip). My three grandchildren are Matthew, whom was born on St. Patrick’s Day, Aubrey & Lillian.

4 President’s Note

I was the Corresponding Secretary for the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick from 2007 to 2014. My jobs were to record the minutes from every meeting and manage the website. In 2007, our printer for the Banquet Programs, started to provide us with a digital copy and I inserted it on our website under the Past Presidents tab. I went on a quest to try and find as many past Banquet Programs as I could, scan them to file and insert them on our website for everyone to view and enjoy. I have accumulated 106 past Banquet Programs since 2007. This Society was formed in 1868 but the first Banquet was a year later in 1869, which leaves 43 outstanding Banquet Programs that I am still searching for through various social media. The party favor for this evening is a re-writable 4GB thumb/jump drive with all of the past Banquet Programs that are also on the website. You can look at them now by scanning this QR Code.

I still manage our website which is hosted by Clubessential. Special thanks to Bill Ivers (current member of the Society & Glee Club).

Thanks,

Michael R. Powell President Friendly Sons of St. Patrick

In 1868, the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati was founded, and thus our involvement of the spirit of the American Irish. In 2002, the Trustees and Officers of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati formed The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Foundation to focus on the promotion of Irish culture and feeding the hungry in our community. 15 “Cherish the Past, Pray for the Future”

Dr. George A. Doherty presided over the creation of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Cincinnati in 1868. The Society carried on a tradition that was started in Philadelphia in 1771. The first Friendly Sons banquet in Cincinnati was at the St. Nicholas Hotel.

Then, as now, a principal toast was “The Robert E. Manley Day We Celebrate.” Honorable Patrick Mallon delivered the quintessential toast: “The day is celebrated by the Irishman whenever he is; today, wherever he is, he sits down to call about him the recollections of the past – to call back the memories of the olden times, and in imagination to again wander upon the daisy-clad hills, and to pluck, perhaps, a shamrock in commemoration of the day. There is nothing, it is true, in the simple clover-leaf; so there is nothing in the stars and stripes upon the flag; yet that flag is the symbol and emblem of all that is dear and most cherished in the American heart. So, too, our shamrock, our harp and our banner of green recall the association of the past, brings before our mental vision:

all those nameless ties in which the charm of country lies.”

16 Early banquets always had a toast to the President of the United States, whoever he might be. At the first banquet, James W. Fitzgerald, Esquire stated: “the virtues of Washington; the statesmanship of Jefferson; the learning of Madison; the heroism of Jackson; the purity of Lincoln; and last but not least, the indomitable will and honesty of Grant will continue to be revered while liberty lives.”

The Major’s toast was “The City of Cincinnati, while we cherish the remembrance of our native land, we love no less our home in the West.” Dr. Doherty’s final toast was entitled, “The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick – we meet tonight unshackled by sectarianism, untrammeled by politics.” The principal address was delivered by T.A. Cocoran and was entitled, “Ireland – we cherish its past, deplore its present, and pray for its future.”

May the same “noble impulses, brave actions and kindly deeds” that have characterized The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick for more than 200 years continue to guide us in future service to our metropolitan community and to our country.

17 Do you know the story behind the Irish flag?

The Irish flag Bratach( na hÉireann) – also known as the Irish tricolor – was flown publicly for the first time during the Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848, on March 7, in Waterford City, at the Wolfe Tone Confederate Club. It was flown by Thomas Francis Meagher, then a leader of the Young Irelander movement, who would go down in history as Brigadier General Thomas Francis Meagher of the Union Army during the American Civil War.

While here in the US Meagher is best remembered for his role as a General in the Union Army and Governor of what is now Montana, his impact on Irish history and patriotic pride was also immense.

When Meagher hung the tricolor in Waterford, it boldly flew for eight days and nights until it was taken down by the British.

Meagher and his fellow Young Irelanders had been inspired by the 1848 revolutions across Europe. In April of 1848, a contingent of them traveled to France to congratulate the rebels there on overthrowing King Louis Philippe I. There, Meagher was presented with an Irish tricolor woven out of French silk.

Thomas Francis Meagher

Upon returning to Ireland, he, in turn, presented it to the Irish people, explaining the symbolism of the flag’s three colors. “The white in the center signifies a lasting truce between the orange and the green,” he said, “and I trust that beneath its folds the hands of the Irish Protestant and the Irish Catholic may be clasped, in generous and heroic brotherhood.”

The green represents Irish nationalism; the orange, Ireland’s Protestant minority, and the Orange Order; the white, lasting peace between the two.

For his role in the 1848 rebellion, Meagher was tried for treason and sentenced to death, but this sentence was commuted to banishment to Van Diemen’s Land in Australia. He would later escape to a new life in the United States. 18 While the tricolor had gained traction as a symbol for Ireland until the Easter Rising of 1916 the primary flag of Ireland was green with a harp in the center (the harp remains as Ireland’s national symbol; Ireland is the only country in the world that has a musical instrument as such). That flag was used as early as 1642, by Owen Roe O’Neill, an Irish soldier, and leader of the O’Neill dynasty.

The earlier Irish flag.

During the Rising, both flags were flown above the GPO, the headquarters of the rebels, and the tricolor became more widely accepted. After the Rising, it was adopted by the IRA during the Irish War of Independence (1919 – 1921), was a symbol of the Irish Free State from 1922 – 1937, and then, when the Irish constitution came into law later that year, it was confirmed as the official flag of Ireland by Article 7, which reads: “The national flag of Ireland is the tricolor of green, white and orange.” Today, the tricolor is a symbol of Irish pride and remains an important reminder of the peace that has been achieved and the progress that has yet to be made. Throughout 1916, which, in addition to marking the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising also marks 100 years since the tricolor emerged into the popular imagination, the Irish Defense Forces and the Thomas F. Meagher foundation are working to ensure that the history of the flag is better known. In the lead up to the 1916 centenary, every school in Ireland received an Irish flag. In post-primary schools, the Thomas F. Meagher foundation presented the Irish flag. In primary schools, the flag was presented by a member of Ireland’s defense forces, who educated the students on the flag’s story, its meaning, and proper care. For example, the flag must always be flown above any others on the staff, it must never be displayed in poor condition, and it must always fly with the green segment closest to the flag staff. (Reversed, the Irish flag is quite similar to the Ivory Coast flag.)

o latitude or longitude Can bound the Emerald Isle. You’ll find it off in Timbuktu Or down along the Nile.

Wherever mothers stoop to smooth A baby’s touseled hair And croon an Irish lullabye— Ireland is there!

Wherever men are brave and true And quick to take a stand And proud to fight, if fight they must— There is Ireland!

Wherever lad and lassie meet A merry dance to share, (Oh, echoes of the Blarney Stone!) Ireland is there!

26 27 The Star Spangled Banner (National Anthem of the United States of America) Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Francis Scott Key

The Soldier’s Song (Irish National Anthem) We’ll sing a song, a soldier’s song. With cheering, rousing chorus. As round our blazing fires we throng. The starry heavens o’er us; Impatient for the coming fight. And as we wait in the morning’s light, Here in the silence of the night. We’ll chant a soldier’s song. Chorus Soldiers are we, whose lives are pledged to Ireland; Some have come from a land beyond the wave; Sworn to be free, no more our ancient sireland Shall shelter the despot or the slave. Tonight we man the Bearna Boaghail. In Erin’s cause, come woe or weal. ‘Mid cannon’s roar and rifle’s peal, We’ll chant a soldier’s song. Peadar O’Cearnaigh

149th Anniversary Banquet

Friday, March Seventeenth Two Thousand Seventeen

Netherland Plaza Hotel “The Workman’s Friend”

When things go wrong and will not come right, Though you do the best you can, When life looks black as the hour of night - A pint of plain is your only man.

When money’s tight and hard to get And your horse has also ran, When all you have is a heap of debt - A pint of plain is your only man.

When health is bad and your heart feels strange, And your face is pale and wan, When doctors say you need a change, A pint of plain is your only man.

When food is scarce and your larder bare And no rashers grease your pan, When hunger grows as your meals are rare - A pint of plain is your only man.

In time of trouble and lousey strife, You have still got a darlint plan You still can turn to a brighter life - A pint of plain is your only man.
