The Glee Club of the Friendly Sons of St 149th Anniversary Banquet of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick - 2017 Patrick of St. Sons of the Friendly 149th Anniversary of the Society Banquet 149 th Annual Banquet 2017 The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick Cincinnati, Ohio Friday, March 17th, 2017 Netherland Plaza Hotel The Society of The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick is a private organization dedicated to the principles of brotherhood, charity and community service. Since the founding of the Cincinnati chapter in 1868, the society has maintained a tradition of openness to Irish as well as non-Irish men of goodwill, without regard to ethnic or religious origin. With God’s blessing we look forward to another century of fraternity and service. Mosaic of St. Patrick Athenaeum of Ohio ~ Cincinnati Photographed by Robert McNary Flischel 1 Michael R. Powell President Grandson of Past President 1954, Robert S. Powell Nephew of Past President 1972, Jerry A. Powell Son of Past President 1976, Robert S. Powell, Jr. Brother of Past President 2009, Douglas F. Powell 2 History of the Powell Family The name Powell is usually of Welsh origin and was brought into Ireland by settlers, especially during the seventeenth century. Powell is sometimes used as a synonym of the name Guilfoyle, taken from an ancient Gaelic surname, Mac Giolla Phoil. Phoil is Gaelic for Paul. Giolla as a prefix to any Gaelic name means “servant of” or “devotee of”. Powell therefore when it designates this old Celtic family means “the son of the servant of, St. Paul.” Other Powell’s who made their homes in Ireland, arrived with the Norman invaders. In due time their descendents, like most of the Norman-Irish families, became “more Irish than the Irish,” and suffered for their loyalty to the Stuart cause by having their lands confiscated and their members dispersed or forced into exile. Richard Powell and Mary Nolan, were born in County Cork and emigrated to the United States through the port of New York in the 1850’s and eventually settled in the west side of Cincinnati in the early 1860’s. From the 1860’s through the 1880’s, Richard and Mary raised several children in Green Township, not too far from Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (St. Al’s) in Bridgetown, which opened its doors in 1866. Richard listed his occupation in the 1870 U.S. Census as a Farmer. In the late 1880’s, Richard was an officer in the Green Township Anti-Thieving Protective Association, which would mobilize to catch horse thieves, a real problem when you make your livelihood stabling horses. 3 Richard and Mary had three sons and four daughters. One of their sons, Richard A. Powell was President of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in 1921. He passed the tradition down to two of his nephews, Richard T. Carroll and Robert S. Powell, and they eventually served as President of the Friendly Sons in 1946 and 1954, respectively. Robert S. Powell (“R.S.”), our 1954 President, was also an auto dealer in Bridgetown. He took up residence across the street from where his Grandfather initially settled. R.S., his children, and many of his grandchildren and great- grandchildren were baptized at St. Al’s. In fact, for the past 150+ years, at least one Powell family has always called that parish home. R.S. married Edna Holscher and they had five children: Patricia, Belle, Jerry, Jackie and Robert S. Jr. The daughters all had independent spirits, most likely a trait passed down from their Mother, who routinely hopped on public transport and headed down to the Reds games by herself. Their oldest son Jerry ran successful blacktop and concrete companies in Cheviot for many decades and besides knowing everyone on the west side, also served as President of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in 1972. The baby of the family, Robert S. Jr, married Lois Borgman and they had four children of their own: Mike, Mark, Doug and Melissa. Mike and Mark were born while Bob was serving in the 101st Airborne. After returning home from the Army, Bob and Lois built a house in Bridgetown. They currently reside in Dent. Over the next 10 years, Doug was born, Bob started his own CPA firm and a gap in the family was finally filled when little sister Melissa was born. In 1976, Robert S. Powell Jr. became President of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. Then, in 2009, my brother Doug became the sixth descendent of Richard & Mary to become President of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. Besides expressing my love for my Mother and Father, Brothers and Sister, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins, I must mention how proud I am of my own family, which consists of my wife Judy, along with two children Jessica (Rick) & Aimee (Chip). My three grandchildren are Matthew, whom was born on St. Patrick’s Day, Aubrey & Lillian. 4 President’s Note I was the Corresponding Secretary for the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick from 2007 to 2014. My jobs were to record the minutes from every meeting and manage the website. In 2007, our printer for the Banquet Programs, started to provide us with a digital copy and I inserted it on our website under the Past Presidents tab. I went on a quest to try and find as many past Banquet Programs as I could, scan them to file and insert them on our website for everyone to view and enjoy. I have accumulated 106 past Banquet Programs since 2007. This Society was formed in 1868 but the first Banquet was a year later in 1869, which leaves 43 outstanding Banquet Programs that I am still searching for through various social media. The party favor for this evening is a re-writable 4GB thumb/jump drive with all of the past Banquet Programs that are also on the website. You can look at them now by scanning this QR Code. I still manage our website which is hosted by Clubessential. Special thanks to Bill Ivers (current member of the Society & Glee Club). Thanks, Michael R. Powell President Friendly Sons of St. Patrick 5 Our Honored Speaker Dave Lapham is a former professional football offensive lineman for the National Football League’s Cincinnati Bengals from 1974 to 1983 and the United States Football League’s New Jersey Generals (1984–1985). During his career, he played all five line positions and was a key player on the 1981 Bengals squad that won the AFC championship, but ultimately lost Super Bowl XVI to the San Francisco 49ers. He has served Dave Lapham as the Bengals radio color commentator for 31 seasons (through the 2015-16 season), is a local Bengals TV analyst, radio host, and a Big 12 football analyst for Fox Sports Net. Lapham attended Wakefield Memorial High School in Wakefield, Massachusetts, where he was a three-year letterman and captain in basketball and football and a four-year letterman and captain in track. He is a member of the school’s hall of fame. He then attended Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Communications. At Syracuse, he lettered in three seasons and was a team captain. He played in the 1973 East-West Shrine Game, the North-South Game, the Senior Bowl and the Hula Bowl. Lapham was selected by the Bengals in the third round of the 1974 draft. He played with them until 1984, when he signed a 10-year guaranteed personal services contract with business tycoon Donald Trump, the majority owner of the New Jersey Generals. After his retirement, in 1986 Lapham became a Bengals broadcaster. He is the color analyst on Bengals’ radio broadcasts with partner Dan Hoard handling play-by-play duties. The duo also hosts Bengals Weekly with Marvin Lewis, a recap and preview television show. He also works on Fox Sports Net’s broadcasts of Big 12 Conference games. Additionally, he appears as a panelist on Bengal’s Nation on WKRC Channel 12. Lapham resides in Cincinnati with his wife, Lynne. They have two grown children, Dave Jr. and Sarah. Lapham is active in the Cincinnati community. His nephew, Richard Lapham, earned first-team accolades as a high schooler at Souhegan High School in Amherst, New Hampshire in 2005 and played offensive tackle for Boston College. His other nephew, Brian Lapham, was an All-Ivy League offensive lineman for Harvard University. 6 The Society of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick History History The Society of The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati is the third oldest Friendly Sons chapter in the United States. 1975 APBA PRO FOOTBALL SET ROSTER The following players comprise the 1975 season APBA Pro Football Player Card Set. The regular starters at each position are listed first and should be used most frequently. Realistic use of the players below will generate statistical results remarkably similar to those from real life. IMPORTANT: When a Red "K" appears in the R-column as the result on any kind of running play from scrimmage or on any return, roll the dice again, refer to the K-column, and use the number there for the result. When a player has a "K" in his R-column, he can never be used for kicking or punting. If the symbol "F-K" or "F-P" appears on a players card, it means that you use the K or P column when he recovers a fumble.
