The main restriction however is funding. Last year, in order to get the patio completed, we asked users to contribute $150 per family unit. Almost all Valhalla users contributed and the funding drive was also supported by members who did not use Valhalla but wanted to contribute anyway. During that process several donors noted that they were happy to contribute the $150 but it was a shame that all the many friends that they had taken up to Valhalla, and who greatly enjoyed the facilities, were not also contributing to upgrading Valhalla. This got the Valhalla Committee thinking of whether we could have a system so all users would be contributing to the improvement of Valhalla. A system that was fair and would spread the burden. The committee decided the fairest system was to have a Development Levy of $5 per person per night. The funds raised from this levy would be solely earmarked to be used on Valhalla to improve

Dear Valued Members,

An oft heard cry that’s starting to sound a lot like a cliché these days. Sadly it is a very relevant sentiment. It’s also a common maxim that the involvement of a young membership in helping to run a club is a sign of a healthy organisation. If that’s the case then the Danish Society is on life support in the Intensive Care Unit! Sound a bit melodramatic? Maybe, but that’s definitely where our club is headed if new blood is not absorbed into its executive.

The Danish Society is incredibly blessed to have well organised activities in our own marvellous clubrooms which are the envy of many cultural groups. I have been involved in various roles on the committee for over a decade now and though my time as President is coming to an end, I have been glad that I could contribute towards the betterment of our society. I have also been lucky enough to have worked with much more dedicated members than me who just keep on putting their hand up each time something needs to be done or a role needs filling. We just wouldn’t have a club without members like that.

There are of course plenty of valid reasons why members aren’t able to volunteer their time. Work and family commitments are the most common. Or they have already done their bit so it’s someone else’s turn. Those same excuses could easily be used by the incumbent volunteers. But the fact is without commitment from fresh members, burnt out helpers will leave and not be replaced, leading to under maintained facilities, extra costs and cancelled events. Nobody wants to see that.

The question is: What sort of club do you want? If it’s just a PO Box in Penrose slowly collecting “junk mail” - that could easily be arranged. On the other hand if you would like to see a vibrant, socially and culturally fulfilling society which is relevant to future generations, then some hard decisions have to be made.

We all lead time poor busy lives while we try to squeeze in as much as possible. That doesn’t mean that we shirk our responsibilities to what’s important. Well, being a member of the Danish Society and enjoying all it has to offer also comes with some responsibilities: Helping out where it’s needed and “doing your bit”.

I’m reminded of a slogan from an Australian Tourism advert to entice Kiwi’s to holiday there. Their catch cry states: “Where the bloody hell are ya?”

Seems an apt call from the Danish Society committee don’t you think?

Twenty-three brave souls came to help over a weekend that was predicted to have heavy rain. As it worked out the weather was merciful to us and the rain come down over night on Saturday during a storm which shook the house. We were a little slow to take the shade sails down so unfortunately the outside light got smashed, but no other damage was noticed. We had 23 helpers during this working bee, Tove Anson, Carl Anson, Mia Barr, Helena Barr, Isla Barr, Antony Barrett, Ayla Graf, Lisbet Molving, John Stewart, Linda Williams, Ian Williams, Emias Williams, Alijah Williams, Graham Wright, Kenneth Larsen, Julie Larsen, Ruth Kristensen, Sarah Bartlett, Leah Bartlett, Elise Bartlett, Richard Logan, Ib Melgaard & myself. Most of the playground equipment was erected with a welder coming in the following week to do the finishing touches. Drains were dug, novaflo pipe and scoria was laid into the ditches. There is still a bit more novaflo pipe and scoria to lay in but hopefully this will get done in the next week. Some of the soil was placed back in the playground ready for the bark to be placed. By the time this appears in the magazine the bark should have been delivered and blown onto the playground all ready for the kids to use - all going to plan! Additional smoke alarms were put up so there is now also one in each bedroom. The inside fireplace was cleaned out ready for the summer period when it is not used. The tracks were given a trim to ensure comfortable walking without too much encroaching vegetation. Everyone enjoyed sild and snaps for lunch which warmed the inner body ready for the busy afternoon. This was the last working bee for the season. A big thank you from me to all you people who have helped at the working bees this year.
