Managing Team Chemistry
5/8/2019 Managing Team Chemistry Managing Team Chemistry In a Nutshell I heard a baseball analyst say that the fight between Mike Piazza and Guillermo Mota last week provided a chance for Piazza's team to improve its chemistry. His rationale was pretty complex, but I think he's right. Team chemistry is a complicated issue, but it's also the key to getting the most out of a team's talent. Team chemistry is one of the most complicated keys to the success of organizations. Effective teams are more than just a collection of talented members. To be effective, a team has to be able to combine the efforts and abilities of members in the right way. Just as no two people are identical, no two teams are identical. Consequently, what works well for one team may not work well for others. However, research has identified several factors that usually produce good team chemistry: Diversity Role taking Constructive norms Leadership Cohesiveness Common vision In This Issue Mets Fight for Team Chemistry What We Know About Team Chemistry Managing Team Chemistry About the Newsletter and Subscriptions Good, Clean Joke LeaderLetter Web Site Mets Fight for Team Chemistry I heard Tim Kurkjian explain on an ESPN radio program last week that the incident of Mike Piazza charging to the pitcher's mound to fight Guillermo Mota after Mota hit him with a pitch on March 12 provided an opportunity for Piazza's team, the New York Mets, to improve their chemistry. First, Piazza is a leader on the team and his actions set the tone for the rest of the team. -

First and foremost, I would like thank my wife, Sarah Woltring, for believing in me and supporting me in an incalculable manner. I would like to thank my parents, Tom and Julie Woltring, for always supporting and encouraging me to make myself a better person. I would be remiss to not personally thank Dr. Colby Jubenville and the entire Department at Middle Tennessee State University. Without Dr. Jubenville convincing me that MTSU was the place where I needed to come in order to thrive, I would not be in the position I am now. Furthermore, thank you to Dr. Elroy Sullivan for helping me run and understand the statistical analyses. Without your help I would not have been able to undertake the study at hand. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to all my family and friends, which are far too many to name. You have all helped shape me into the person I am and have played an integral role in my life. ii ABSTRACT A game defined and measured by hitting and pitching performances, baseball exists as the most statistical of all sports (Albert, 2003, p. -

A's News Clips, Saturday, April 3, 2010 Matt Cain and Brett Anderson
A’s News Clips, Saturday, April 3, 2010 Matt Cain and Brett Anderson are dominant in Giants' 2-1 victory over the A's By Daniel Brown, San Jose Mercury News Before Giants starter Matt Cain said a word about his own efficient outing Friday night, he tipped his cap to his A's counterpart. "(Brett) Anderson was really, really good,'' Cain said, shaking his head. "The guys were coming back to the dugout talking about how lively his pitches were, how much his ball was moving." Precision pitching from both sides of the bay set a brisk tone for the Giants' 2-1 victory at AT&T Park. The game sailed by in 2 hours and 5 minutes — a full-out sprint by exhibition game standards. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the fast pace allowed him to stick with his regulars a little longer. For the A's, though, it wasn't quite fast enough: Center fielder Coco Crisp suffered a partially dislocated pinkie finger on his left hand when he was thrown out trying to steal second in the third inning. A's manager Bob Geren described Crisp's status was day to day. Crisp exited the game after his headfirst slide, but Geren said Crisp was scheduled to play only three innings anyway. The Giants tried some daring on the base paths, too, when Juan Uribe tried to score from second on a wild pitch in the seventh. Uribe was out — albeit unscathed — after his collision with A's catcher Landon Powell. Uribe's exuberance was understandable, considering the Giants' offensive silence since arriving back from Arizona. -

Major Overhaul Has LA Feeling Blue Heading Into April 2005 4. Los
Major Overhaul has LA feeling blue heading into April 2005 4. Los Angeles Dodgers: Make no mistake about it, the Dodgers surprised us all, including myself by winning the 2004 NL West division. Will they do it again? I highly doubt it and for a number of reasons. First of all, just about every off- season decision they made I disagree with on so many levels. LA had a good young nucleus and Paul DePodesta broke most of it up It really could come back to bite him, the franchise and everyone involved. The Dodgers are going to have trouble hitting outside of the #1, 3, 4 and 5 spots. Hitting in the #2 hole is outfielder Jayson Werth, an ex-Toronto Blue Jay. Werth batted . 262 with 16 homers and 47 runs driven in last year. He’s a decent player defensively and played his best baseball at home. On the corners I don’t think Jose Valentin, who can hit for power but makes an abundant amount of errors, and Hee Seop Choi are the answers. They definitely do not look like the answers when you talk about catching the baseball. Cesar Izturis (32 doubles) is such a rock when it comes to defense; Gold Glove preseason favorite at shortstop in the National League if you ask me (would be his second consecutive). Not only does he do that, but he’s gotten better with the bat in his hands. Izturis drove in 62 runs from the leadoff spot, stole 25 bags, hit .288, and had nine triples in 670 at-bats. -
