I was working for a fine dining restaurant, but COVID hit and I started working in construction with my uncle. My uncle has a welding license and he showed me a few things and really helped me. I’ve been around welding and this training will only increase my skills.

I appreciate that Lone Star College is a welcoming environment. This is my first year taking welding courses but the people whom I’ve met already have been nothing short of great. With this type of training I can take my skills anywhere. I look forward to completing my training and this is a great start to my journey.”

25 WHAT’S NEXT “I started looking for a new career field. I wanted something that had the potential to make a lot of money and something that I could get into fairly quickly. I started looking on the Lone Star College website and found the page for the truck driving academy.

There were plenty of other routes I could have gone to get my CDL, but in my opinion, Lone Star College was, by far, the best option. There were several reason that I chose Lone Star College, but the main reason was their reputation. And I wasn’t disappointed. Everything from the orientation, to receiving my certificate and license at the end of class, was absolutely great.

One of the best moments in class was the day we did road finals. I pulled out onto the road to test, and felt good about driving the truck. I was taught so much in just 6 weeks. I was very nervous, but I knew I had been taught everything that I needed to know. It was up to me to make the most of it.

I recommend Lone Star College to anybody that’s considering this career. The Lone Star College team is professional, helpful and patient. They even bring in multiple recruiters throughout the class, and help you apply for jobs. I really enjoyed the classes and working with my classmates. We all worked as a team to help each other out. We all had different backgrounds, work experience, etc. We were all there for the same reason. We were trying to make a better future for ourselves.”

26 WHAT'SWHAT'S NEXTNEXT “I was looking for a new career and I chose the Clinical Medical Assistant program. I’m a single mom and I used to work part time as a Resident Care Assistant/Caregiver. This path is a high demand industry and will provide a stable career. I am passionate about helping others and I saw Clinical Medical Assistant as a rewarding profession for me. I want to be part of a health care team that is critical to the quality of patient care.

The Clinical Medical Assistant program is located at LSC-Montgomery and LSC- Kingwood. I was able to practice in a hands-on environment and use a variety of equipment including an EKG machine and sphygmomanometer. Once I finish the program, I hope to find a job where I can apply the skills and knowledge I have learned and continue learning and be an asset to the company.”

CYNTHIA G. LONE STAR COLLEGE CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT STUDENT

27 WHAT’S NEXT

“I heard about the Pre-Apprentice Mechatronics program through a friend and watched her not only finish the program, but find a career in a widely known company with great pay. I decided it was time for a career change! Mechatronics is developing and understanding processes for making machines work efficiently, making products more resourcefully and learning how to use different methods to develop the end product. Each area of training in PLCs, mechanical and quality control, hydraulics, industrial maintenance and so many more brought new challenges and it is hard work, but if you put in the work you will get the results in your training.

The in-depth hands-on experiences stood out to me especially in the area of electrical. Electrical just made sense – I really got how each process worked and the importance of safety and making sure you understood all those connections. With my training I could easily go into the mechatronics or HVAC field. I am looking forward to completing my certificate and I know I have the skills to enter a competitive industry.”

28 35 WHAT'SWHAT'S NEXTNEXT “I was a contractor and a stay-at-home dad before COVID hit and everything changed. My wife and I found ourselves in a situation where we needed to do something else to make sure our kids would be okay. I live down the street from the school and I decided to stop by and find out more about truck driving. I really felt like this was my next step and I went for it. I thought this would be the opportunity that would provide for my family.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to change my life. With my CDL I plan on finding a new job and making more money with my training. I am also thankful for the school and the work they do for the students.”

The Lone Star College-Transportation and Global Logistics Technology Center is a brand-new, 16,000 square foot state-of-the-art training facility where students learn the skills necessary to become a truck driver. The facility houses six classrooms, a large driving track, six backing pads and a realistic truck driving simulator. Lone Star College is training the next generation of CDL drivers with state-of-the-art technology and equipment.

As the saying goes, life got in the way of Marie Heron’s desire for an education.

“Upon moving to Texas, I talked about going back to school and getting my GED,” said Marie. “I started looking into programs and came across Lone Star College.”

The High School Equivalency Program is designed for adults who left high school before graduation and are now interested in obtaining a high school diploma by successfully passing the 2014 General Educational Development (GED®) official test.

“I had really great teachers through the GED program,” said Marie. “They always had kind words and were willing to help anyway they could, as long as I also was willing to put in the effort.”

Upon receiving her GED in December 2018, Marie immediately enrolled in the current Patient Care Technician program. “I could not be more elated as I have always wanted to be a nurse,” said Marie. “This is my second step in achieving this goal.”

The LSC Patient Care Technician program is a nationally recognized certification for Certified Nurse Aides with Phlebotomy and EKG training. The healthcare career ladder is typically structured so that there is a salary increase for each skill added to the basic Certified Nurse Aide training.

“I hope that anybody who is looking to go back and get their education chooses to do so no matter your age or the obstacles life throws your way,” said Marie.

32 WHAT'S NEXTNEXT “I wanted to change my career and when the layoffs occurred due to COVID I saw an opportunity to make that change. I was an office worker most of my life as a civil engineer and the thought of starting a new life on the road was for me. Our class started training in brand new tractors and trailers at the college. We learned how to use manual transmissions as part of our training. When I finish the program I am looking forward to providing for my family and putting my daughter through college.”

The objective of the Truck Driver program is to provide an applicant with the knowledge and skills in preparation for successfully completing the program. An individual successfully completing this program should have the ability to safely operate a tractor- trailer on the nation’s highways. Lone Star College is now officially recognized as a Third Party Testing Center by Texas Department of Public Services. The opportunity to test and earn the Commercial Driver’s License is scheduled based on successful completion of the program.

“I am currently enrolled at Lone Star Collage taking courses in the Floorhand/Roustabout program. One reason I am taking this training is to have a better understanding and knowledge of what it takes to work on an oil rig. I’ve always been interested in oil and gas. I remember traveling though south Texas and noting the smell of crude coming from the pump jacks. I thought it was amazing that we could pump oil from the ground.

I am at a point in my life where I feel that I am ready for a career change and oil and gas is the place to be. One of the many skills you will learn in this program is safety first! The hands-on training, classroom instruction and on rig training gave us all the tools of the trade needed to be a roustabout. I feel confident that I am ready to take on the challenge of becoming a roustabout.”

34 WHAT'SWHAT'S NEXTNEXT “I chose the Clinical Medical Assistant program at Lone Star College because I have always wanted to help others. I was a volunteer firefighter for five years before I had my kids and helping others is my passion.

Before joining the Clinical Medical Assistant program, I was a stay-at-home mom to my three kids and my two step kids, along with working full time in various positions in the chemical plants when needed. Once I finish my certificate I hope to gain employment in the medical field with a doctor’s office with opportunities to grow from there.”

The Lone Star College program is designed to meet and exceed the state requirements.
