March 28 saw the continuation of the NFF’s legacy in the region as the chapter honored 14 scholar-athletes, in- cluding Travers Schmidt of Tamaqua Area HS, who claimed the chapter’s top scholar-athlete award and is headed to Cornell, and Matt Stankiewitch, a tackle at Blue Mountain HS who has earned an athletic scholarship to Penn State. Colleges selected by the other honorees include St. Joseph’s, Scranton, Niagara, King’s College, Wilkes, and Kutztown. The event attracted a crowd of 264 people, and the chapter distributed a total of $2,600 in scholarships while also recognizing the region’s 2007 championship coaches for their outstanding seasons. Dr. James Gallagher, Potts- ville Area School District Superintendent, delivered the keynote address: “An Educator’s View of a Scholar-Athlete.” Several VIPs attended, including State Senator James J. Rhoades, Pottsville Mayor John D.W. Reiley, and Schuylkill County Commissioners Mantura Gallagher and Francis McAndrew. Per tradition, the chapter identified spon- sors who brought six freshmen from each of the area high schools to the event, challenging the freshmen to earn a return trip in their senior year. • Notre Dame Football Postgame Notes (At Pitt)
NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL POSTGAME NOTES (AT PITT) TEAM NOTES With the loss, the all‐time series against Pittsburgh now stands at 47‐21‐1 in favor of the Irish, snapping a three‐game Notre Dame winning streak. At 69 meetings, it is the fifth‐longest series in school history, trailing only Navy (87 games), Purdue (85), USC (85) and Michigan State (77). The Irish slip to 11‐2 in the month of November under Brian Kelly. Tonight is just the fifth loss for the Irish in their last 32 games (27‐5). With the loss, Notre Dame falls to 424‐138‐15 all‐time when ranked and 19‐8 as a ranked team against unranked Pittsburgh teams. The Irish now stand at 134‐56‐3 against current ACC teams all‐time. The loss snaps a steak of 10 consecutive wins for Notre Dame in games decided by a touchdown or less. That was the third longest such streak in the nation since 1980 and the longest active streak in the nation. ND’s last loss in a close game was an 18‐14 loss to Florida State in the 2011 Champs Sports Bowl. The Notre Dame defense forced nine punts tonight, the most it has forced this season and the best over since forcing Wake Forest to punt 10 times on Nov. 17, 2012 in Winston‐Salem. The Irish offense had five plays of at least 33 yards tonight. The previous high this year was three done against both Temple and Air Force. Turnovers have proven critical this fall for the Irish.

But it was USC who finished with more points for the ninth time in 10 seasons, walking out of South Bend with a 31-17 victory. The Trojans (6-1) got off to a fast start against the Irish (4-3) by forcing a Notre Dame three-and-out on the game’s first drive. USC then marched 66 yards on its opening pos- session, which culminated with junior quarterback Matt Barkley finding freshman tight end Randall Telfer alone in the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown pass with 6:16 re- maining in the first quarter. After another Irish three- and-out, Barkley again drove the Trojans down the field and connected with sopho- more receiver Robert Woods on a 3-yard strike to push the USC margin to 14-0, leaving the once-frenzied crowd in a stunned silence.
