  • Patriot Defence: Enlightenment Through Medicine
PATRIOT DEFENCE: ENLIGHTENMENT THROUGH MEDICINE The NGO Patriot Defence was founded in May 2014 with the goal of implementing tactical medicine and emergency care in Ukraine through education, improving skills, and providing appropriate medical equipment and supplies, which step by step will lead to a transformation of the values in civil society and creation of a new, modern Ukrainian medical system. COMBAT LIFESAVER COURSE (CLS) The Combat Lifesaver course, taught in all NATO-member states, gives soldiers first aid knowledge for the battlefield. “Patriot Defence” instructors run a three-day course, teaching skills using various training materials, including components of the IFAK and holding simulations to test the students. There are no more than 10 students per instructor and only after successfully completing the course do the trainees receive an IFAK. IMPROVED FIRST AID KIT (IFAK) The Improved First Aid Kit (IFAK) is a NATO-standard kit, complete with essential components to assist with injury on the battlefield that can maximize the casualty’s chance of survival. AS OF MAY 12, 2016: 25 198 soldiers and 4 619 cadets trained, 21 257 IFAKs delivered. UKRAINIAN LONG RANGE PATROL MEDIC The course is designed for Special Forces Units operating within the Ukrainian Military and Security Forces. • During 2014, What Started out As the Euro-Maidan
No. 3 THE UKRAINIAN WEEKLY SUNDAY, JANUARY 18, 2015 5 2014: THE YEAR IN REVIEW From Euro-Maidan to Revolution of Dignity uring 2014, what started out as the Euro-Maidan was transformed into the Revolution of Dignity. By Dyear’s end, Ukraine had a new president, a new Verkhovna Rada and a new government. And, at the end of the year, the Rada voted to abandon the country’s previ- ous “non-bloc” status and set a course for NATO member- ship. A civilizational choice had been made. As the year began, there was concern about the regular presidential election that was to be held in March 2015 as the opposition – that is the pro-Western parties of Ukraine – appeared to have no unified election strategy other than being against Viktor Yanukovych. Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform (UDAR) Chair Vitali Klitschko was call- ing on his rivals to ditch their campaigns and unite behind his single candidacy. The expected Batkivshchyna candi- date, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, and Svoboda party candidate Oleh Tiahnybok said they would compete independently in the first round of the presidential election. Billionaire confectionary magnate Petro Poroshenko also was plan- ning to throw his hat into the ring. The concern among observers was that so many candidates could cannibalize the pro-Western vote or spread it too thinly, letting anoth- Vladimir Gontar/UNIAN er victory slip through their fingers. On January 10 came The scene on January 20 on Kyiv’s Hrushevsky Street, where violent clashes between the Berkut and protesters news of a rift between Euro-Maidan activists and leaders broke out on January 19 and were continuing.

  • March 10, 2015 Dear Friends of Patriot Defence, Nine Months Have
March 10, 2015 Dear Friends of Patriot Defence, Nine months have passed since the Ukrainian World Congress humanitarian initiative “Patriot Defence” was launched. It has been 282 days since the first course was organized on June 1, 2014. In that time, we have trained over 12,814 soldiers in the adapted Combat Lifesaver courses and over 10,222 Improved First Aid Kits (IFAKs) have been distributed. There have been 175 training missions and Patriot Defence instructors have completed over 220 training sessions in more than 75 locations throughout Ukraine. We have received support from over 600 donors from around the world. The cost of one IFAK is approximately 100 USD. However, the most important component of our work is the training. Without learning the necessary skills and how to use the kit, a soldier would not be able to save his own life or his buddy’s life. The cost of training one soldier is 25 USD – this covers transport to the training area and the cost of the training materials. All this is possible because of your constant support. The “Patriot Defence” team is continuously evolving and is always on the initiative. From the beginning of the year four key events have taken place: On January 19-21, 2015 Patriot Defence organized the first international conference on “The Development, Standardization and Implementation of Tactical Medicine in Ukraine”. The conference was attended by over 450 participants from Ukraine and around the world. The resolutions passed by the conference outline the steps necessary to implement tactical medicine in Ukraine and stress the necessity of relying on NATO standards.

Marta Dyczok brings all these qualities together in her radio reportages from Canada and Ukraine on the Euromaidan protests. Short, always to the point and easy to read, the reports demonstrate with unique clarity the global nature of today’s politics and the power of the people on the street to change the course of history.” – Serhii Plokhy, Harvard University, Chair of Ukrainian History, author of The Gates of Europe: A History of Ukraine “Marta Dyczok’s ongoing research into how the control of media shaped political narratives in Ukraine has given her the qualifications and context to provide a rich commentary on the Euromaidan. Thus, this volume is an excellent example of how social science research can have direct relevance to current events. As the Research Dean of her Faculty during these years, I am proud to recognize Dyczok’s engaged scholarship and to acknowledge her contributions in both the academic and public arenas.” – Andrew Nelson, Anthropology Department, University of Western Ontario “The collection of reports in this book is an excellent contribution to the understanding of the events which followed one another in hectic succession from autumn 2013 to summer 2015.

  • The Political and Military Implications of Ukraine's Volunteer Battalions
Journal of Military and Strategic VOLUME 18, ISSUE 3 Studies Crowdsourced War: The Political and Military Implications of Ukraine’s Volunteer Battalions 2014-2015 Montana Hunter Introduction The Ukrainian phenomenon consists in the fact that the war is conducted by a people’s army, where the majority of individuals are either volunteers or patriots of Ukraine, and this also includes professional military staff. Yuri Butusov – Ukrainian Military Analyst1 The Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) were an ineffective military force in 2014 when Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region began their attempt to establish independent republics. In an attempt to stabilise the situation in the Donbas, volunteer formations rose up spontaneously and shortly thereafter the Ukrainian Government turned to the citizens of Ukraine, putting out a call for volunteer-fighters and civilian support. This open call by the Ukrainian government to a broad network of potential labourers was, in effect, a call to crowdsource Ukraine's 1 Rosaria Puglisi, “A People’s Army: Civil Society as a Security Actor in Post-Maidan Ukraine,” IAI Working Papers 15 (23 July 2015): p. 1. ©Centre of Military and Strategic Studies, 2018 ISSN : 1488-559X VOLUME 18, ISSUE 3 response to Russian aggression. The formations established by this call, later known as volunteer battalions, played a significant role in combat operations during the first six months of the conflict, yet they have received little academic attention. During 2014 and 2015, over forty volunteer battalions, with an on-paper total strength of between 33 and 460 fighters each, were involved in combat operations in the Donbas.
