México ABSTRACT The genus Amblyomia Stål is revised and two new species, A. foreroi and A. prome- ceops from Colombia, are described. New host plant and distributional records of A. bifasciata Stål are given; habitus illustrations and drawings of male and female gen- italia are included as well as a key to the known species. The group feeds on bromeli- ads. Plantas hospederas y nuevas local- idades para A. bifasciata Stål son incluidas; se ofrece una clave para la separación de las especies conocidas, las cuales son ilustradas incluyendo los genitales de ambos sexos. Las preferencias tróficas del grupo están orientadas hacia bromelias. Palabras clave: Insecta, Heteroptera, Coreidae, Leptoscelini, Amblyomia, Bromeli- aceae The neotropical genus Amblyomia Stål was previously known from a single Mexi- can species, A. bifasciata Stål 1870. In the present paper the genus is redefined to in- clude two new species collected in Colombia. This genus apparently is restricted to feeding on members of the Bromeliaceae, and specimens were collected on the heart of Ananas comosus and Aechmea bracteata. -

Acquisition and inoculation of Xf occur sometime during the process of stylet penetration into the plant. That process is most rigorously studied via electrical penetration graph (EPG) monitoring of insect feeding. This study provides part of the crucial biological meanings that define the waveforms of each new insect species recorded by EPG. By synchronizing AC EPG waveforms with high-magnification video of H. coagulata stylet penetration in artifical diet, we correlated stylet activities with three previously described EPG pathway waveforms, A1, B1 and B2, as well as one ingestion waveform, C. Waveform A1 occured at the beginning of stylet penetration. This waveform was correlated with salivary sheath trunk formation, repetitive stylet movements involving retraction of both maxillary stylets and one mandibular stylet, extension of the stylet fascicle, and the fluttering-like movements of the maxillary stylet tips. -

Aposematism, true bugs, Heteroptera, avian predators, mimetic complex Abstract. True bugs are generally considered to be well protected against bird predation. Sympatric species that have similar warning coloration are supposed to form a functional Müllerian mimetic complex avoided by visually oriented avian predators. We have tested whether these assumptions hold true for four species of European red-and-black heteropterans, viz. Pyrrhocoris apterus, Lygaeus equestris, Spilostethus saxatilis, and Graphosoma lineatum. We found that individual species of passerine birds differ in their responses towards particular bug species. Great tits (Parus major) avoided all of them on sight, robins (Erithacus rubecula) and yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella) discriminated among them and attacked bugs of some species with higher probability than oth- ers, and blackbirds (Turdus merula) frequently attacked bugs of all the tested species. Different predators thus perceive aposematic prey differently, and the extent of Batesian-Müllerian mimetic complexes and relations among the species involved is predator dependent. Analyses conducted using repetitive DNAs have contributed to better understanding the chromosome structure and evolution of several species of insects. There are few data on the organization, localization, and evolutionary behavior of repetitive DNA in the family Lygaeidae, especially in Brazilian species. To elucidate the physical mapping and evolutionary events that involve these sequences, we cytogenetically analyzed three species of Lygaeidae and found 2n (♂) = 18 (16 + XY) for Oncopeltus femoralis; 2n (♂) = 14 (12 + XY) for Ochrimnus sagax; and 2n (♂) = 12 (10 + XY) for Lygaeus peruvianus. Unfortunately, farmers and crop-protection advisers finding egg masses of stink bugs during crop scouting frequently struggle to identify correctly the species based on their egg masses, and easily confuse eggs of the invasive H. halys with those of other (native) species. To this end, we have investigated using matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for rapid, fieldwork-compatible, and low-reagent-cost discrimination between the eggs of native and exotic stink bugs. Abstract: In the current paper, we used a method based on stink bug egg-protein immobilization on filter paper by drying, followed by post-(storage and shipping) extraction in acidified acetonitrile containing matrix, to discriminate between nine different species using MALDI-TOF MS. We obtained 87 correct species-identifications in 87 blind tests using this method. (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was measured in the laboratory. Both nymphal and adult predators displayed high predation rates on eggs, nymphs and adults of the southern green stinkbug. However, developmental times of fourth instar P. maculiven- tris on eggs or nymphal instars of N. viridula were longer than on fifth instars of the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), suggesting that N. viridula is suboptimal prey for the spined soldier bug. Preference experiments in which fourth instar P. maculiventris were given a choice between fourth instars of N. viridula and fifth instars of S. littoralis indicated that the stinkbugs were less vulnerable to predation than the caterpillars, mainly because of their greater agility. The potential role of P. macu- liventris in augmentation or conservation biological control of the southern green stinkbug in greenhouse and field crops is discussed.
