YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music. -

The Review 2018-2019 The annual review of the Royal Grammar School, Guildford Royal Grammar School Annual Review 2018-2019 FROM THE HEAD Winning and losing, success and failure, victory and defeat. These words dominate not only the back pages of every newspaper but even, in recent months, the front pages at a time when the political landscape has been so focused on votes and motions. Schools, equally, are not immune from focusing on such a polarised, black-and-white way of looking at achievement; this is just one of the many reasons why school league tables only tell part of the story with regard to the value of the education offered. “qualities such as service, integrity, inclusivity, respect – really are at the heart of what as an institution makes us tick.” At the RGS we talk frequently about the many different types of ‘win’. From a sporting perspective this can manifest itself as gestures of great sportsmanship; senior boys devoting time to coaching other year groups; boys staying on to support other teams; friends rallying around injured teammates; or an individual congratulating a boy selected ahead of him. In isolation, these wins are sometimes overlooked, taken for granted, and possibly viewed as insignificant but collectively these small victories have greater, longer-lasting impact than any momentary result. This attitude translates to every aspect of life at the RGS. We are proud of headline successes: public examination results, impressive performances, and achievement in the co-curricular sphere. This edition of The Review reports on many of these and we rightly celebrate each and every one of them, as should the boys. -

This is because of the overtly sexual nature of the cultural expression. This research project aimed to expand the conversation concerning these women by investigating how female dancehall dancers, models and auxiliaries (designers, beauticians and vendors) make a living from Dancehall's informal economy. Through empirical evidence, this research will suggest that women who participate in Jamaican dancehall have subjectively and economically benefited from the informal economy that is embedded in dancehall. ii Acknowledgments This research could not have come to fruition without the help of many amazing souls. It was Fifty Years Ago Today: Recording Copyright Term and the Supply of Music Megan MacGarvie Boston University, Questrom School of Business and NBER John McKeon Boston University, Questrom School of Business Jeremy Watson University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management July 20, 2021 It was Fifty Years Ago Today: Recording Copyright Term and the Supply of Music Abstract This paper examines the effect of the expiry of recording copyright on the supply of music - in the form of re-releases, availability in streaming platforms, and concert per- formances - by artists popular in the UK in the 1960s. We find that recording copyright expiry has different effects on a song's availability in different distribution channels. The lapsing of copyright leads to a large increase in the number of re-releases in physical formats, holding constant artist, age, and year fixed effects. However, when a song's original recording copyright expires, it becomes less likely to be performed in concert. Moreover, copyright status is not associated with differences in availability on the digital streaming platform Spotify. These results show that copyright has nuanced effects on availability, and can lead to different and even opposite effects on availability of a prod- uct across different distribution channels. They also show that within the context of digital distribution, the impact of copyright on availability differs based on the business model of a platform. Yet much of the empirical literature on the effects of copyright has studied content distribution channels from the pre-digital era, typically focusing on a single distribution channel.1 Because technological change has led to a rapid and dramatic evolution of business models in copyright-intensive industries, more empirical research is needed to inform and adapt copyright regimes and firm strategy (Greenstein et al., 2013). -
