Six microsatellite loci were isolated from a partial DNA library in order to study the invasion patterns of a seed chalcid, Megastigmus spermotrophus, introduced to Europe and New Zealand. Allelic diversity at all described loci was high, ranging from 17 to 30 alleles per locus. All six loci were successfully amplified in 15 congeneric species. Seed parasitism is an insect feeding strategy involving intimate contact and manipulation of a plant host. Little is known about the microbial associates of seed-parasitic insects. We characterized the bacterial symbionts of Megastigmus (Hymenoptera: Torymidae), a lineage of seed-parasitic chalcid wasps, with the goal of identifying microbes that might play an important role in aiding development within seeds, including supplementing insect nutrition or manipulating host trees. We screened multiple populations of seven species for common facultative inherited symbionts. We also performed culture independent surveys of larvae, pupae, and adults of M. spermotrophus using 454 pyrosequencing. This major pest of Douglas-fir is the best-studied Megastigmus, and was previously shown to manipulate its tree host into redirecting resources towards unfertilized ovules. Douglas-fir ovules and the parasitoid Eurytoma sp. were also surveyed using pyrosequencing to help elucidate possible transmission mechanisms of the microbial associates of M. spermotrophus. Results: Three wasp species harboured Rickettsia; two of these also harboured Wolbachia. Males and females were infected at similar frequencies, suggesting that these bacteria do not distort sex ratios. The M.

The mechanism of host manipulation is currently unknown. Microbial associates and venoms are two potential mechanisms of host manipulation. Microbial associates are emerging as an important player in insect-plant interactions. There is also evidence that venoms may be important in gall- induction by phytophagous wasps. Abstract Species richness (SR) is a tool that managers can use to include diversity in planning and decision-making and is a convenient and useful way to characterize the first level of biological diversity. A richness list derived from existing inventories enhances a manager’s understanding of the complexity of the plant and animal communities they manage. Without a list of species, resource management decisions may have negative or unknown effects on all species occupying a forest type. Without abundance data, a common quantitative index for species diversity cannot be determined. However, SR data can include life his- tory information from published literature to enhance the SR value. This report provides an example of how inventory information can characterize the complexity of biological diversity in the ponderosa pine forest type in Arizona. The SR process broadly categorizes the number of plant and animal life forms to arrive at a composite species richness value. Common sense dictates that plants and animals exist in a biotic community because that community has sufficient resources to sustain life.

Abstract: The species of Megastigmus Dalman 1820 (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Torymidae), related with Eucalyptus species (Myrtaceae) from Australia were reviewed. A total of 33 species of Megastigmus were studied, with nine species described as new: chrisburwelli, erolhasani, judikingae, lawsoni, leptocybus, rieki, thailandiensis, thitipornae, zvimendeli. Three new synonymies are created: adelaidensis Girault syn.new = maculatipennis Girault, ater Girault syn.new = tasmaniensis Girault, trisulcus Girault syn.new = voltairei (Girault). All species were described in detail, with photographs of their diagnostic characters and available biological data provided. Some new diagnostic characters of the genus were found and added to the generic diagnosis of earlier authors. An identification key is provided for the treated Megastigmus species. Species of Megastigmus were recorded as parasitoids of the gall inducer insects or as a gall inducer in several parts of plants. Key words: Eucalyptus associated species, diagnostic characters, distribution, biology. INTRODUCTION Eucalyptus camaldulensis is one of the best known eucalyptus trees outside Australia and economically is the most important hardwood species of the dry lowland in the entire Mediterranean and Middle East regions (1). Over the last decade, the invasive eucalyptus gall wasp, Leptocybe invasa Fisher & LaSalle (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) became established in the Mediterranean Basin (2-8), and subsequently spread to Sub-Saharan Africa, India and South-East Asia (9) and recently Brazil (10).
