It can keep you up all night thinking about how you double- SEPTEMBER bogeyed a par 4 that is under 300 yards. Or, you can find yourself boasting to friends that you EVENTS 3 Cigar Dinner hit—or almost hit—your tee shot on the green of a par 4 and made easy birdie. Be sure to like our Facebook page @MeadiaHeights to share pictures and stay up-to-date on upcoming social events. OCTOBER 17 Trivia Night There are several intricacies in playing this short but articulate hole. Either your second shot plays blind from 110 to 150 yards, or you can select to bomb driver, leaving yourself with a chip/pitch of 20 to 50 yards onto a green that slopes both front to back and left to right. Nearly every chip or pitch rolls off the back of the green, and you’re left with the thought of par, or even bogey, from 20 yards away after your tee shot. And then there is this: If you hit your tee shot left, the hazard swallows your golf ball, leaving you with a recommended provisional ball from the tee. If it is a lost ball, the third shot was from the teeing ground, now heading toward the antagonizing double bogey. Beckley native wins The Greenbrier Classic’s $20,000 Volunteer Giveaway WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – (August 3, 2017): Jan Datsko of Beckley, W.Va., was the lucky winner in The Greenbrier Classic’s $20,000 Volunteer Giveaway. Datsko, who has volunteered every year since the tournament’s inception in 2010, worked in sponsor services this year and was surprised to get the call that he had won the prize. “I was shocked,” he said. “I don’t usually win much. My wife’s pretty lucky, but I’m not. In fact, when they called and told me, she said, ‘Are you sure they didn’t say Peggy?’” Volunteers at The 2017 Greenbrier Classic earned a raffle ticket at the completion of their fourth shift. Each volunteer earned an additional ticket for each shift worked after the fourth shift. The winner was drawn at the conclusion of the tournament and received $10,000 in cash and $10,000 to the charity of his choice. Datsko selected The Beckley Area Foundation as his charity. Founded in 1985 with a gift of $1.1 million, The Beckley Area Foundation now has assets of nearly $40 million in 430 different funds managed by four trustee banks. Only the income from these funds is spent, and it is used to meet the community’s many charitable needs. “The money stays in the community and helps local needs,” said Datsko. “That’s what I wanted to do.” Datsko wasn’t the only lucky winner during The Greenbrier Classic in 2017. Gregory Bowser of Beaver, Pa., walked away with a brand new Ford Explorer XLT from My Local Ford Dealers as part of a giveaway promotion, which ran throughout the tournament.
