TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals host the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena on Wednesday in the second of three meetings between the teams this season. Washington won the first game 3-2 in the shootout on Nov. 16. The Capitals have won 15 of their last 16 games against the Bruins (15-1-0). Washington has outscored Boston 48-24 over that 16-game span. Nicklas Backstrom has earned 41 points (8g, 33a) in 38 career games, and a point in 13 of his last 16 games against Boston (4g, 16a). In addition, Backstrom has earned 20 points (4g, 16a) in 15 games against the Bruins since the start of the 2014-15 season, tied for most points in the NHL against Boston during that span. Since he entered the NHL in 2007-08, the Capitals are 23-0-0 against the Bruins when Backstrom earns a point. Alex Ovechkin has registered 49 points (24g, 25a) in 49 career games against Boston. Braden Holtby is 17-3-0 against Boston with a 1.81 goals against average and a .944 save percentage.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT Prime Matchup – Tonight's game between the Capitals (22-5-5, 49 points) and the Boston Bruins (20-5-6, 46 points) marks the third game in NHL history where two teams have combined for at least 95 points within their first 33 games (Dec. 18, 2008: Detroit vs. San Jose, 97 combined points; March 20, 2013: Chicago vs. Anaheim, 97 combined points). The game features the two most recent winners of the Prince of Wales Trophy as the winners of the Eastern Conference (Capitals: 2018; Boston: 2019). Washington enters the game as the only team in the NHL with six players who have scored 10 or more goals (Alex Ovechkin: 21; Jakub Vrana: 15; Evgeny Kuznetsov: 12; T.J. Oshie, Tom Wilson and John Carlson: 11). Only Florida has five players with 10 or more goals. The Capitals 117 goals this season rank first in the NHL.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Dynamic Duo - Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom played in their 896th career game together on Monday against the , with each player recording a goal and an assist. Backstrom assisted on Ovechkin's goal for a club-high 254th time in his career. With Backstrom and Ovechkin in the lineup (since Oct. 5, 2007 vs Atlanta), the Capitals hold a record of 532-261-103.

Torrid Pace – John Carlson leads all NHL defensemen in goals (11), assists (32) and points (43) and ranks third in the NHL in assists (Leon Draisaitl: 34; Connor McDavid: 33). Carlson has recorded a point in 12 of his last 16 games (4g, 16a) and 24 of his 32 games this season, including a separate nine and eight game point streak (nine games: Oct. 8 through 24, 5g, 13a; eight games: Nov. 7 through 20, 1g, 12a). Carlson is on pace for 110 points over an 82-game season. Only five defensemen in NHL history have recorded more than 100 points in a season (Bobby Orr: six times; Paul Coffey: five times; Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis and Brian Leetch: each once) and only Orr and Coffey have recorded at least 114 points (Orr: five times; Coffey: four times). Larry Murphy holds the Caps franchise record for most points by a defenseman in a season with 81 (1986-87: 23g, 58a). Earlier this season, Carlson became the first defenseman since Al MacInnis (1990-91, 11g, 31a) to record at least 42 points through a team's first 30 games and one of four defensemen in NHL history to ever reach that mark (Bobby Orr: five times; MacInnis and Denis Potvin: once). Carlson was one point shy of joining Orr as the only defenseman in NHL history to record at least 43 points in 30 games. In the previous seven occurrences of a defenseman recording 42 points in 30 games, six of them would win the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman.

Special Hags – In the 11 games Carl Hagelin missed due to injury from Nov. 9 to Nov. 30, the Capitals killed 29 of the 37 power play opportunities (78.4 percent) against them, ranking 20th in the NHL. In the 21 games with Hagelin in the lineup, the Capitals have killed 65 of the 74 opportunities (87.8 percent). The Capitals' franchise record for penalty kill percentage in a single season is 89.2 percent (1997-98), the only time in franchise history the Capitals killed at least 87 percent of their penalties. Since Hagelin's return on Dec. 1, the Capitals are 11-for-11 on the penalty kill and are one of two teams (Carolina) who have not allowed a power play goal in December. Hagelin is averaging a career-high 2:50 per game in shorthanded ice time (previous career high: 2:32 in 2017-18 with Pittsburgh). Last season, Hagelin played for three different teams (Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Washington), averaging over 2 minutes of penalty kill time per game with both Pittsburgh and Washington (averaged 1:13 shorthanded time per game with Los Angeles). In each instance, the team saw an increase in their penalty kill percentage versus when he was out of the lineup.

Penalty Kill Percentage Without Penalty Kill Percentage With Hagelin Team Hagelin and Average Shorthanded TOI

Washington 158/202 (78.2 percent) 49/60 (81.7 percent), 2:21

Holtbeast - Braden Holtby is tied for the NHL lead with 15 wins this season, reaching the mark in his first 22 starts, the third-fastest in his career (2015-16: 15 wins in 19 starts; 2017-18: 15 wins in 21 starts) and the fifth fastest in franchise history. Holtby has earned a point in 16 of his last 18 games (14-1-2) and 19 of his 23 games (15-3-4).

• Climbing the Rankings - Holtby is entering tonight’s game with 272 career wins in 443 career games and sits in 47th place on the NHL's all-time wins list. Among the goaltenders that rank in the top 50 in wins in NHL history, Holtby is the only goaltender to play in fewer than 500 career games and ranks first in win percentage (.614). Holtby ranks ninth among active goaltenders in wins.

21 For Ovi – Alex Ovechkin scored his 679th career goal on Monday versus Columbus and is now six goals shy of passing Teemu Selanne (684) for the 11th most goals in NHL history. On pace for 53 goals this season, Ovechkin, who turned 34 on Sept. 17, is looking to become the second player in NHL history to record at least 50 goals in a season at the age of 34 or older (John Bucyk: 51 goals in 1970-71 at the age of 35). Nine players in NHL history have recorded at least 40 goals at the age of 34 or older. Additionally, with another 50 goal season, Ovechkin would join Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky as the only players in NHL history with nine 50 goal seasons. Ovechkin is one of four players in NHL history to record at least 10 40-goal seasons (Gretzky: 12; Marcel Dionne: 10; Mario Lemieux: 10).

QUICK HITS All That Power - The Capitals rank sixth in the NHL on the power play (24.5 percent, 23 goals on 97 opportunities). The Capitals, who haven’t gone more than two consecutive games without a power play goal, hold a 14-3-1 record this season when they score a power play goal. Among active players, Alex Ovechkin's 255 power play goals rank first in the NHL, 85 more than Patrick Marleau (170), who ranks second, while Nicklas Backstrom's 291 power play assists rank third. Additionally, John Carlson's 78 power play points (9g, 69a) since 2017-18 rank first among defensemen. Additionally, Ovechkin is two power play goals shy of passing Teemu Selanne for the third-most power play goals in NHL history.

Quick to Bounce Back - The Capitals have not lost consecutive games in regulation this season.

Wednesday Night Hockey - The Capitals hold a 5-1-0 record on games played on Wednesday this season.

Positive Periods - The Capitals have outscored their opponents in all three periods this season (first: 33 to 26; second: 41 to 27; third: 41 to 32).

Against the Atlantic - The Capitals are 8-1-0 against Atlantic Division teams this season.

Heavy Hitter - Alex Ovechkin recorded nine hits on Monday against the Columbus Blue Jackets, tied with Tom Wilson (Nov. 30 at Detroit) for the most by a Capital in a game this season.
