Speaker Biographies Bench Bar Program Judge Ken Starr Is best known as the independent counsel who headed the investigation that led to the impeachment of U.S. President Bill Clinton. In 1994 Starr was named the independent counsel to lead the investigation into the so-called Whitewater affair, which involved a land deal in Arkansas during the time Clinton was that state’s governor. As a result of the investigation, 11 people—including Clinton associates James and Susan McDougal — were convicted of crimes. He subsequently was directed to investigate what came to be known as Travelgate, involving the firing of longtime White House workers, and Filegate, pertaining to FBI files on Republicans that were found in the White House. In 1998, however, allegations of an affair between Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky became the focus of Starr’s attention. Based on Starr’s findings, the House of Representatives voted to impeach the president in December 1998. The Senate acquitted Clinton the following year. CHARLES M. BLOW Charles M. Blow is the Visual Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times, where his column appears every Monday and Thursday. Mr. Blow’s columns tackle hot-button issues such as teen pregnancy, the national debt, the presidential race, gender roles, and the gay rights movement. Blow joined The Times in 1994 as the paper’s graphics editor; during his tenure he led the publication to win awards for work that included its information graphics coverage of 9/11 and the Iraq war. Mr. Blow is a CNN contributor, and also often appears on MSNBC's Morning Joe. He has appeared on Andrea Mitchel Reports, Hardball with Chris Matthews, CNN’s American Morning, Headline News' The Joy Behar Show, Fox News' Fox and Friends, the BBC and Al Jazeera, as well as numerous radio programs. Charles' New York Times Bestselling memoir, Fire Shut Up in My Bones, was released in September 2014. In this captivating book, he mines the rich poetry of the out-of-time Louisiana town where he grew up--a place where slavery's legacy felt close, reverberating in the elders' stories and in the near constant wash of violence. An isolated boy, Blow is fiercely attached to his mother, a woman with five sons, brass knuckles in her glove box, a job plucking poultry, a soon to be ex-husband, and a love of newspapers and learning. But the closeness doesn't protect him from secret abuse at the hands of an older cousin. It's damage that triggers years of searing self-questioning, and Charles explores how this affected his college life and beyond.

  • The Mean New Deal
The Mean New Deal A few months ago, Disney executives held a secret meeting with members of the ABC News program “The View.” Things had become so hateful on the morning program that some Disney board members were loudly complaining. The message delivered was “knock off the hate, ladies.” The primary culprit was Joy Behar, a bitter leftist. Another problem was Sunny Hostin, who’s even more to the left of Behar and equally as vicious. The two would routinely gang up on Meghan McCain, Disney’s token non-liberal. Ms. McCain often fired back emotionally. The presentation was about as entertaining as a snake bite. Last week Meghan McCain quit the show. “The View” always had an edge but its creator, Barbara Walters, maintained a strict civility. Rosie O’Donnell could not abide that but Whoopi Goldberg is not a vicious person and did her best to provide some decorum. But once Donald Trump began to dominate the discourse, civility collapsed on The View as well as many other TV forums. For example, late-night comedians have pretty much destroyed themselves as mass-market entertainers. Stephen Colbert was never the talent Jon Stewart is but could once deliver a satirical take that amused. No longer. Colbert is now a venomous left-wing zealot who is impossible to watch unless you live in his blatantly partisan tent. Same thing with the snarky leftist Seth Myers, a man desperately in need of a funny reboot. Mean is not humorous or engaging or enlightening. Mean is simply mean, a posture with no socially redeeming value.
