• Why We Run/Tri The Face of Addiction Community effects of addiction • In 2016, an estimated 64,000 deaths were due to drug overdoses in America. • Among the 1,262 MA individuals whose deaths were opioid related in 2017, 83% tested positive for fentanyl. • Massachusetts overdose deaths attributed to synthetic opioids rose from 67 deaths in 2012 to 1,550 in 2016. • Over the age of 12, nearly 1 in 12 Americans have a substance use disorder. Exceptional Care, Without Exception Thank You Team BMC Athletes History of Team BMC • Thanks to John Hancock, Team BMC has run the Boston Marathon for 16 years • In 2016 we began expanding to other races, including the BAA 5K and Boston Triathlon • In total, Team BMC has raised over $7 million for BMC programs • In the 2014 Boston Marathon, we raised a record breaking $1.1 Million with 107 runners; this year, we raised $815k with runners raising an average of over $10,000 per bib. What you believe, you can achieve! • Where does the money go? Every penny goes directly to Boston Medical Center programs Your Fundraising Strategy 1. Start now 2. Include Multiple Methods 3. Communicate through a variety of vehicles 4. Be persistent and positive Your Fundraising Pitch FACT: Letters and emails are the most effective way to raise money. • Start by creating a list of people who may want to support you. This can include places you do business, co-workers, family, friends, etc. You can even ask family and friends to help widen your network! • Your personal letter/ email should include: – Your personal goal. Aim high! – Why you are running? What is your personal connection? – Facts about BMC and our addiction medicine programs – Ask for a specific amount. The worst anyone can say is no – Say thank you! Whether someone says yes or no, acknowledge their generosity and support – Consider sending at least 2-3 emails to your network as emails can be easily missed or passed over Make Your Fundraising Stand Out • Matching Gifts! Double your donations! • Secure a sponsor! • Host a night out! – Happy hour at local bar or restaurant – Ask a local organization to donate a percentage of sales for one night – Organize a spin or yoga class • Sell Something! – Team BMC T-Shirts, Candy Bars, Baked goods • Donate an item for a company wide raffle. Concert tickets, vacation rentals, sporting games, and apple watches and ipads tend to raise a lot of money! • Is it your birthday? Ask for a donation in lieu of a birthday gift! Keep an eye out for yours in the mail! – If you opted to pick your packet up at the race, you can do so at Adidas Runbase starting Thursday, June 21. You will need a valid photo ID. • Meet us on Boston Common for some pre-race prep and a team photo! Boston Triathlon • Packet Pickup: Saturday, July 21 • Kids Splash & Dash: Saturday, July 21 • Race Day: Sunday, July 22 • Volunteers: We need volunteers for both Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22 for various times and positions.
