A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE Keys to life

By Jocelyn Judd, Te Awamutu Christian Centre I notice New Zealanders are forgetting something and it’s like the house keys have gone missing. We are forgetting where the blessings on our land came from. New Zealand was founded on advice and laws found in the Bible, so now that we are a blessed country let’s not despise the reason for it. The Bible is worldwide a most popular book. It is relevant to all. It shows how our children can hold up their heads with confidence. It explains the reason for every problem, and has the answer in every crisis. It reveals that God loves the whole world and He sent His only Son, Jesus, to show compassion in healing and forgiveness. The Bible is historically proven and is more up to date than the newspaper. It gives us hope for the future, and tells exactly what will happen in the future. So please don’t despise your heritage of faith. Honour your Bible, (dust it off, read a page or two), and you will be honoured. You will find the keys for your life. The activity at mobile Eftpos machines was a sign of the shopping intent of the visitors to the event. Once again local organisations provided food, refreshments and parking as fundraisers on the day. A couple of showers blew through and temperatures weren’t exactly balmy, but overall there were plenty of smiling faces. Two Waikato charities are the recipients of $7500 each thanks to the ‘questionable’ artistic talents of Promoting responsible dog Waikato District Health Board (DHB) staff. For three nights staff ‘had a great time’ staging a ownership & stock control show at Clarence Street Theatre to raise money for Assistance Dogs and the Waikato branch of Autism NZ. Waikato DHB chief executive Craig Climo presented FREEPHONE 0800 WAIPADC cheques to each of the charities recently. Mr Climo says all proceeds from the event were 0800-924-723 available for distribution to charitable organisations. ‘‘Smaller charities are generally chosen, because they typically miss out on mainstream funding.’’ Assistance Dogs Charitable Trust provides dogs for a range of disabilities rather than catering for one specific disability. This allows dog training to cater to an individual’s requirements regardless of what their impairments might be (e.g. children with autism). Autism Charitable Trust will look forward to continu- ing running the services for families in the Waikato with holiday programmes, teenagers with autism groups and employing a field worker to work with families in crisis.

ihikihi Autobody Repairs owners Craig and Marg O’Hanlon, along with staff members Jamie Westbury K and Carlton James, opened their doors to host visiting members of Marineland Street Rods recently. The Friday night get-together was on the eve of the Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club 30th Anniversary which the napier rodders and families were attending. The 50 strong group in attendance included customers, friends and former workmates who the O’Hanlons had met through their years in hot rodding bot here in Te Awamutu and Poverty Bay. Mr O’Hanlon had been a member and past president of Gisborne’s Surf City Rod and Custom Club. While in gisborne he was also New Zealand Hot Rod Association delegate and the napier Club fell within his zone. He and his wife have kept in touch with, and supported marineland events. The evening was much appreciated by the Napier visitors who had driven through on the day. They and other guests enjoyed drinks and nibbles supplied by Kihikihi Autobody Repairs and Fairview Motors, the company which services the Spies Hecker paint system the O’Hanlons use. As well as being able to view some of the cool projects being undertaken at the Kihikihi workshop, visitors were given an insight into the new technology involved in today’s car painting world with presentations by Fairview Motors paint sales representative Dean Clarke and Mrs O’Hanlon. They demonstrated the latest paint matching tools and products and the shop’s new spray booth — a state-of-the-art booth equipped for waterborne paint systems, the next big change in the automotive refinish industry. The evening wound up with a discussion amongst car builders about new colours and pearl and special effects that were available, giving everyone some new ideas for their next projects. Spot prizes of Mequires car care products supplied by the Smits Group were given away before the visitors headed for their motels before the following days rod run and festivities. Kihikihi Autobody Repairs were grateful to the support of Fairview Motors and Smits Group for helping make the event possible.

he latest results from the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) show there are still T big differences in safety levels offered by new cars. The results, released in New Zealand today by the Automobile Association and the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) show the 2012 Holden Barina has scored the highest five-star safety rating, alongside the Audi A6 and the BMW X3 SUV. Other ANCAP test results include four stars for the Citroen Berlingo van and Micra, and disappointing three star results for the Chery J1 and Geely MK. AA General Manager Motoring Services, Stella Stocks, says for a smaller car such as the Barina to score the top safety rating, it is testament that manufacturers can produce very safe small cars. ‘‘It is no longer surprising to see manufacturers producing vehicles that score 5-stars.’’ The new Holden Barina maintained its structure well during crash testing and comes with a full complement of air bags, anti-lock braking (ABS), electronic brake-force distri- bution (EBD), electronic stability control (ESC) and seat belt reminders as standard features. ‘‘Given this result, there is no excuse for any manufacturer to be releasing new vehicles that score less than four stars, so the Chery J1 and Geely MK results are unacceptable. I urge New Zealand motorists to ask what the safety rating is when they are making their next vehicle purchase and buy the safest vehicle they can afford to buy,’’ says Ms Stocks. NZTA Chief Executive Geoff Dangerfield says the agency is promoting the purchase of safer vehicles as part of the Safer Journeys strategy, aimed at significantly reducing deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads by 2020. ‘‘Reducing road deaths and injuries is a shared responsibility that requires safer roads and roadsides, safe speeds, better driver behaviour, and safer vehicles. When consumers have good information on vehicle safety they will purchase safer vehicles — that demand in turn drives manufacturers to build more safety features into their cars. We encourage people to look carefully at crash test results and buy the safest vehicle they can afford.’’ ANCAP is supported by all New Zealand and Australian motoring clubs, the New Zealand government, all Australian State governments and the FIA Foundation. The AA and NZTA are both members of ANCAP. 406 Alexandra St | TE AWAMUTU | Ph 07 870 2535 | fairviewmotors.co.nz ■ Detailed crash test results are available on the Grant McConnachie 0274 854 987 | Carolyn Picton 027 264 9512 websites of both organisations — www.aa.co.nz or

The ever consistent Gary Russo posted his second +5 score to be joint runner-up with Jack Hjorth, who followed up his first round +7 with +3. Nieremeijer did enough to win comfortably but was unable to recapture the stunning form he produced in round one when finishing on +12. Playing round two in the company of his wife Addy, club steward Jim Dunn and scribe David Strawbridge, Nieremeijer was +1 after nine holes and +3 after 14. He dropped a shot at 15 and left the 16th on +2 thinking the worst scenario would be finishing all square. Dunn told him: ‘‘We will have none of that talk.’’ Nieremeijer responded by sinking a two metre putt at 17 to be +3, but carded a six on the 18th to finish +2 for the day. Scoring was of a particularly high standard in the women’s day three-ball best-ball competition, despite the greens having just been sanded. The winning team of Bev Parsons, Meredith Pengelly and Denise Goile blitzed the field with a hot 57 net. The runner-up team of Shirley Grey, Mary Whealeans and Shirley Egglestone finished on 64 — a score that might well have won on any other given day.
