La Brea Avenue ∙ Los Angeles, CA 90036 ∙ Tel (323) 938-5222 ∙ [email protected] Reuben Nakian was born in 1897 in College Point, New York, the fifth child of Armenian immigrants. From 1916 to 1919, he apprenticed to the noted sculptor Paul Manship in New York, along with Gaston Lachaise. Nakian and Lachaise established their own studio from 1920 to 1922. In 1922, with a stipend from Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Nakian established his own studio. Nakian’s early works of the 1920s and 30s were mainly of exotic animals sculpted in a sensually smooth manner typical of the era. In the 1920s and 30s, Nakian received considerable recognition with numerous exhibitions in New York, including the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Downtown Gallery and Wildenstein Gallery, as well as the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Corcoran in Washington D.C. In 1926 he met Brancusi and assisted him in installing his first one-man exhibition in the U.S. In the mid 1930s, Nakian met the painter Arshile Gorky (and through him Willem De Kooning), who encouraged him to seek greater expression through abstraction. Nakian - already inspired by Picasso, and some of the European avant gardes, as was Gorky - sought to further his own expressive possibilities and pursued a course of modeling the figure with unprecedented freedom, atypical in American sculpture. Indeed, Nakian’s unique style in sculpture anticipated artists such as Willem De Kooning’s work by more than two decades. Nakian’s immersion in Greek mythology captured his interest and served as the primary inspiration of his subject matter for the duration of his career, through the mid 1980s.

  • Dostoevsky and the Beat Generation
    MARIA BLOSHTEYN Dostoevsky and the Beat Generation American literary history is rich with heroes of counterculture, maverick writers and poets who were rejected by the bulk of their contemporaries but inspired a cult-like following among a few devotees. The phenomenon of Beat Generation writers and poets, however, is unique in twentieth-century American letters precisely because they managed to go from marginal underground classics of the 1950s to the official voice of dissent and cultural opposition of the 1960s, a force to be reckoned with. Their books were adopted by hippies and flower children, their poems chanted at sit-ins, their lives faithfully imitated by a whole generation of young baby boomers. Their antiauthoritarian ethos along with their belief in the brotherhood of mankind were the starting point of a whole movement that gave the United States such social and cultural watersheds as Woodstock and the Summer of Love, the Chicago Riots and the Marches on Washington. The suggestion that Dostoevsky had anything to do with the American Sexual Revolution of the 1960s and street rioting in American urban centres might seem at first to be far-fetched. It is, however, a powerful testimony to Dostoevsky’s profound impact on twentieth-century American literature and culture that the first Beats saw themselves as followers of Dostoevsky and established their personal and literary union (and, as it were, the entire Beat movement) on the foundation of their shared belief in the primacy of Dostoevsky and his novels. Evidence of Dostoevsky’s impact on such key writers and poets of the Beat Generation as Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997), Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), and William Burroughs (1914-1997) is found in an almost embarrassing profusion: scattered throughout their essays, related in their correspondence, broadly hinted at and sometimes explicitly indicated in their novels and poems.

The exhibition, which constitutes one of the Museum's periodic reports to the public on works purchased or acquired by gift, was selected and installed by Alfred H. Barr, Jr., Director of Museum Collections. Like most acquisition shows, the exhibition demonstrates again the policies of the Museum Collection in the range and diversity of dates, styles and place of origin of the paintings and sculptures. Work by artists of 12 nationalities dating from the 1890's (2 pieces ) to the 1950 's ( 31 pieces ) are included.     THE ART STUDENTS LEAGUE PRESENTS Faces of the League Portraits from the Permanent Collection Peggy Bacon Laurent Charcoal on paper, 16 ¾” x 13 ¾” Margaret Frances "Peggy" Bacon (b. 1895-d. 1987), an American artist specializing in illustration, painting, and writing. Born in Ridgefield, Connecticut, she began drawing as a toddler (around eighteen months), and by the age of 10 she was writing and illustrating her own books. Bacon studied at the Art Students League from 1915-1920, where her artistic talents truly blossomed under the tutelage of her teacher John Sloan. Artists Reginald Marsh and Alexander Brook (whom she would go on to marry) were part of her artistic circle during her time at the League. Bacon was famous for her humorous caricatures and ironic etchings and drawings of celebrities of the 1920s and 1930s. She both wrote and illustrated many books, and provided artworks for many other people’s publications, in addition to regularly exhibiting her drawings, paintings, prints, and pastels. In addition to her work as a graphic designer, Bacon was a highly accomplished teacher for over thirty years. Her works appeared in numerous magazine publications including Vanity Fair, Mademoiselle, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Dial, the Yale Review, and the New Yorker. Her vast output of work included etchings, lithographs, and her favorite printmaking technique, drypoint. Bacon’s illustrations have been included in more than 64 children books, including The Lionhearted Kitten. Bacon’s prints are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art, all in New York.
