Several biological effects have been ascribed to saponins. Extensive research has been carried out into the membrane-permeabilis- ing, immunostimulant, hypocholesterolaemic and anticarcinogenic properties of saponins and they have also been found to significantly affect growth, feed intake and reproduction in ani- mals. These structurally diverse compounds have also been observed to kill protozoans and molluscs, to be antioxidants, to impair the digestion of protein and the uptake of vitamins and minerals in the gut, to cause hypoglycaemia, and to act as antifungal and antiviral agents. -

Webster) on Organs in animal studies By Ajibade V. A., Famurewa, O The Federal Polytechnic, P.M.B 5351, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria Abstract – The histopathological view of liver, intestines and kidney of bacterial infected rabbits, fed with 100mg/ml saponin extracted from Phyllanthus niruri over a period of seven days was carried out to determine the effect of the plant extract on these organs after treatment. Saponin was administered as strawberry suspension at a dose of 10mg per day (divided into four doses) to ten rabbits, nine of which were fed with food contaminated with 0.5mL bacterial suspension obtained by McFarland standardization (10% Barium sulfate) after starvation for 6hrs . Multiple foci of tubular necrosis and haemorrhages in the kidney, marked hyperplasia of the mucosal layer of the small intestine, and a mild periportal lymphocytic cellular infiltration of the liver of the treated rabbits were observed. Plasma urea, uric acid, creatinine and blood glucose levels increased significantly (p < 0.05) in the treated rabbits. Keywords : Histopathological, Phyllanthus niruri, Saponin, Toxicological. This abundant residue, combined with Antioxidant potential the lack of related studies of beetroot waste by applying the PLE methods to obtain bioactive extracts is the main Phenolic compounds novelty of this work. Then, the objective was to explore the PLE process to enhance the value of the residues, Waste valorization evaluating process yield, total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (DPPH, ABTS and FRAP methods) of the recovered extracts. Chemical composition was analyzed using LC-ESI-MS/MS and GC-MS analysis. Anti oxidant potential results suggest the recovered extracts are comparable with synthetic antioxidant (BHT). Ferulic acid, vitexin and sinapaldehyde, were the most abundant phenolic compounds obtained from the extracts. -

(May 2008) Sherif Mohamed Hassan, B.S.; M.S., Suez Canal University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Aubrey Lee Cartwright Three saponin-rich extracts (20, 60, 100% methanol), four 100% methanol sub- fractions and seven independently acquired fractions (A-G) from guar meal, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L. (syn. C. psoraloides), were evaluated for antimicrobial and hemolytic activities. These activities were compared against quillaja bark (Quillaja saponaria), yucca (Yucca schidigera), and soybean (Glycine max) saponins in 96-well plates using eight concentrations (0.01 to 1.0 and 0.1 to 12.5 mg extract/mL). Initial guar meal butanol extract was 4.8 ± 0.6% of the weight of original material dry matter (DM). Butanol extract was purified by preparative reverse-phase C-18 chromatography. Two fractions eluted with 20, and one each with 60, and 100% methanol with average yields of 1.72 ± 0.47, 0.88 ± 0.16, 0.91 ± 0.16 and 1.55 ± 0.15% of DM, respectively. -

INTRODUCTION Saponins are widely distribute.d in plants of agricultural impo,rtance, and in par- ticular, in leguminous forage species such as ilfatfa. they have been obseried to elicit a number of responses, mostly detrimental, in animals consuming them. A review of U.S. Department of Agriculture studies on the relationship of alfalfa saponins to bloat has been published (Lindahl et aL, 1,957), but information on other aspects of saponin influences in ruminants and monogastrics is scattered through the literature. A review of present knowledge of saponins and their effects on livestock is desirable, not only because considerable information on their bio- logical effects has been collected but also because many gaps still exist in the under- standing of their mode of action. The genes involved in the various biosynthetic pathways are unknown. To gain insight into these pathways in an echinoderm, we performed a comparative transcriptome analysis and functional annotation of the body wall and the radial nerve of the sea cucumber Holothuria scabra; to define genes associated with body wall metabolic functioning and secondary metabolite biosynthesis.
