KUWAIT CITY, May 11, (KUNA): His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al- Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah congratulated Opinion everyone on the advent of the festive cel- ebration of Eid Al-Fitr, according to the Amiri Diwan. The next issue of the Arab Times will appear either on Sunday morning if Eid Omar bin Abdul-Aziz died, wolf of corruption ate the sheep falls on Wednesday or Monday morning if it falls on Thursday. — See you then

By Ahmed Al-Jarallah Editor-in-Chief, the Arab Times OMAR bin Abdul-Aziz, the eighth caliph of the Umayyad Dynasty, Amir hits inhumane occupation boots whose reign lasted only thirty months, is considered to be one of the most important eras in Islamic history and an example of equality and justice after the era of the four rightly-guided caliphs. It is for this reason that he was considered as the fifth rightly-guided caliph. Caliph Omar bin Abdul-Aziz’s reign was characterized with jus- tice for all, irrespective of status or class. During his reign, he restored justice and rectified the grievances committed by his predecessors in the Umayyad Dynasty. He also dismissed and even punished any governor or state official who was proven to be corrupt and unjust. Omar bin Abdul-Aziz did not seek the throne. He was an ascetic who did not wish to carry this great responsibility. Therefore, after being nominated as the eighth ruler of the Umayyad Dy- nasty, he addressed the people from the pulpit by saying, “O people, I have been nominated as your caliph despite my unwillingness and without your consent. So here I am... I relieve you of your pledge that you have taken for my allegiance. Elect whomsoever you find suitable as your caliph.” People then shouted in response, “O Omar, we have full faith in you and we want you as our caliph.” The first thing he ordered was the return of all the wealth that the rulers of the Umayyad Dynasty seized from the treasury (Bait-ul-Mal), even his wife’s jewelry and luxurious clothes. It is said that Omar bin Abdul Aziz had enriched people to such an extent that they did not find a poor man who would accept charity (Zakat). He also ordered wheat to be spread on the tops of mountains/hills so that it would never be said that a bird went hungry Rockets being launched from Gaza Strip to Israel, on May 11. India’s NE fears surge US volunteers mobilize for ‘India COVID crisis’ NEW YORK, May 11, (AP): Volunteers at Hindu temples, Muslim groups and Sikh relief organizations across the United States are mobilizing to support India as the world’s second most populous country struggles to handle a devastating surge of the coronavirus. From coast to coast, faith groups tied to the Indian diaspora have collected hundreds of oxygen concentrators and electrical transformers to ship to overwhelmed hospitals, raised millions for everything from food to fi rewood for funeral pyres and gathered in prayer for spiritual support for the Asian nation. “This is a human tragedy, said Manzoor Ghori, executive director of the California-based Indian Muslim Relief and Charities, which has donated more than $1 million for pur- poses including supporting teachers and providing families with thousands of medical kits and more than 300,000 meals. He’s one of many in the US diaspora to have lost relatives to the virus in In- dia, where total confi rmed infections and deaths have surpassed 22.6 million and 246,000, respectively, though the true numbers are believed to be much higher. Kashyap Patel, an Atlanta-based physician, said the pandemic has been Ghori “catastrophic” for him, with about a dozen members of his extended family in India contracting the virus, from teenagers to octogenarians, and his 73-year-old uncle dying from it. ‘Music helps’ Muti says pandemic year silenced culture RAVENNA, Italy, May 11, (AP): Maestro Riccardo Muti has once again reopened the Italian musical sea- son in his adopted hometown of Ravenna after another — and if all goes well perhaps fi nal — round of pan- demic closures. With a purposeful nod and fl ick of his baton, the 79-year-old conductor on Sunday ended what has been an unexpectedly long silence in Italian theaters, enrapturing a socially distanced and masked audience with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s fi rst live performances since the fall — back-to-back evening concerts of Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms. The concerts launched a three-stop Italian tour by the Vienna Philharmonic to celebrate 50 years of ties with the conductor and served as a precursor to the summer- time Ravenna Festival, this year celebrating the 700th an- niversary of Dante’s death. “The emotion is above all one of rebirth, which is a posi- tive word, but it means that something died before. So, within the positivity, there is the regret over something lost. And we, for a year, lost the Muti possibility of life, in the com- plete sense of the word,” Muti told The Associated Press before the concert. “This fact, that in nearly the whole world, theaters have remained empty, orchestras were reduced to si- lence, is something that has never been seen before.” After World War II, Muti said, US soldiers made it Michelle Rasul flashes a rockstar sign in the lobby of her apartment building in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, May 9. Westbrook breaks -double record, Wizards fall to Hawks

ATLANTA, May 11, (AP): Russell Westbrook broke Oscar Robertson’s 47-year- old record for triple-dou- bles and missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer as the Washington Wizards lost 125-124 to the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night. Westbrook completed his 182nd triple-double when he pulled down a rebound with 8:29 remaining. The nine-time All-Star and 2016- 17 MVP finished with 28 points, 13 rebounds and 21 assists, car- rying the load for a Wizards team that was missing Bradley Beal, the league’s No. 2 scorer. Trae Young scored 36 points and John Collins added 28 for the Hawks, who moved within a half-game of the fourth-place New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference. Washington is 10th in the East, which would give the Wizards the fi nal spot in the league’s new postseason play-in tournament. Beal has a strained left hamstring and the Wizards said earlier Mon- day he would also miss the team’s next game, a rematch at Atlanta on Wednesday. BASKETBALL
