M.V. Hamilton Building 128 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102 Use Student Entrance on Lenfest Plaza / Cherry Street

MATERIALS LIST FIRST OF ALL, I don’t know if everyone in the class has previous experience with monotype in any form, so please write to me, briefly, about your background in print shops: [email protected]. Thanks.

ALSO, please bring with you, two images of an art work you are fascinated by. I don’t mean on your phone or ipad, I mean printed out in hard copy, on a piece of . Could be taken from a book or whatever.

AND, two or three photographs that are visually or graphically intriguing to you that you might want to address interpretively. ______

PAPER I’m suggesting a paper like RIVES BFK or STONEHENGE, both in WHITE. Those are pretty much standard print . You can bring them in full sheets and they can be cut down there in the shop. If you bring paper, please bring it between or in a stiff protective portfolio so that it doesn’t get damaged in transit. There is a BLICK supply shop on the first floor and we will try to have them stock paper for us, but there is also a large BLICK store only about 10 minutes walking from the school. We’re going to be doing a lot of work over the days so bring enough paper and you can fill in as we go if necessary.

PLATES 2 plates, 12 x 12 inches, and 2 – 3 plates, 8 x 8 inches

Plexiglass is not so expensive and it can be used over and over again. The choice is yours. In my own studio I use copper plates which I’ve had and used for years, but if you don’t have them, they can now be expensive. So, zinc or plexiglass are good and useful alternatives. Unfortunately the print shop doesn’t have a stock of these that you can use so we need to bring our own.

Below are some links to RENAISSANCE GRAPHICS which is a great place to get the best prices and best service on any printing supplies. As you will see, copper has gotten $$. But alternatives are zinc and perhaps best, plexi. I believe they will cut custom sizes for you. Call them by phone and ask: 888- 833-3398. I’ve done business with these people for almost 20 years, they are business-like and direct but provide really good service and excellent products.

There are other sources but I am just using this as an example:

APRON and THIN LIGHTWEIGHT LONG SLEEVE STUDIO SHIRT to keep ink and solvent off your arms.

DISPOSABLE GLOVES I use a glove available from Grainger Hardware (they have a website with an 800 number and you can call them directly, they deliver promptly via UPS. They offer a very fine yet tough green glove made of nitrile (will last MUCH longer than what you get in the paint dept of a hardware store). I use a size medium, without powder. If you have small hands get small. You want a tight fit. Item number: 4GC49, I think that is for medium, so check. Touch N Tuff, Powder Free Nitrile Gloves: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/ANSELL-Disposable- Gloves-4GC50?cm_sp=IO-_-IDP-_-PC_TS70300505&cm_vc=IDPPCTZ1

Note: PAFA requires gloves used in school facilities to be latex-free.

SCISSORS (nothing expensive or fancy)

ELMERS GLUE (small container)

BRUSH CUP I suggest the kind with an inset that has holes in it so that the sludge sinks down to the bottom: http://www.jerrysartarama.com/discount-art-supplies/brush-washers-and-cleaning-supplies/brush- washers/da-vinci-air-tight-brush-washer.htm

BRUSHES I recommend rounds and soft synthetic fibers. As in the following: http://www.dickblick.com/products/blick-scholastic-wonder-white-round/

Maybe a few sizes like 14, 12, 10. If you are already involved in monotype bring what you have, but I like soft rounds as you can really draw with them onto the plate as opposed to flats. And stiff oil brushes are scratchy but also can be interesting. Best thing is to have a variety, but I’m emphasizing soft.

PALETTE KNIFE I suggest this kind of knife: http://www.dickblick.com/items/03107-1003/

Maybe bring two in case one breaks. Please do NOT bring those tiny little painting knives like one finds in many painting classes, the kind used for doing the whiskers on a mouse. We’re talking here a palette knife for clearing paint off the palette not using it for drawing. There will be no working with palette knives in this class, that’s a schtick for other classes but not mine.

PAPER TOWELS I always recommend Bounty Microwave, they are very absorbent. It’s critical to have good paper towels.

ROLL OF WHITE ARTIST TAPE, maybe 1 inch wide

MAT KNIFE or something like that, and a FEW SINGLE-EDGE RAZOR BLADES

PHONE WITH A CAMERA Recommended but not required (only if you already have, don’t go out and buy one)

PENCILS Graphite along the lines of 4B, 5B, 8B. Please bring a variety.

SKETCH BOOK Sized in the range of 8 ½ x 11 inches or 10 x 10 inches. NO tiny little ones please. STRAIGHT EDGE of some kind. If you have a long ruler used for tearing paper please bring that, but also a smaller straight edge or triangle for possibly using in making your work. Don’t go out and buy something, only bring if you already have. A decent-sized plastic or metal triangle as one would find at BLICK is fine for this.

LITHO CRAYONS A few, if you have them SOLVENT We are going to use only GAMSOL solvent in the print shop. It is the cleanest of the solvents. It’s available in small jars but that tends to be expensive. I’d recommend getting a gallon. If you are flying obviously you can’t take that on the plane – plan to purchase locally upon arrival.*

Optional but recommended if you can bring them, for recycling solvent: a few wine bottles or other storage container with cover/closure and a funnel. Can be provided by instructor.

GLASSINE PAPER -- or similar, for taking home monotypes that might not be completely dry

THE SCHOOL WILL PROVIDE etching ink, brayers and other studio related equipment and

* Supplies can be purchased locally at Blick Art Materials (PAFA on-campus store or 1330 Chestnut Street location – approx. 10-minutes’ walk from school, https://www.dickblick.com/stores/pennsylvania) as well as at other locations.
