It is not just that families are struggling but that natural family commitment is actually being systematic- ally eroded by legislation. By this I mean that lesser choices are being given the same status in law thus making it easier to opt out of, so harder to go through with, the tough basics of life. What is Dental Disease? There are two components to dental disease in dogs and cats. Firstly, there is reversible dental disease involving tartar and plaque build up. When addressed with prompt dentistry work the mouth has a good chance of returning to a normal and healthy condition. Irreversible dental disease is called periodontal disease. Have you ever noticed that your pet has bad breath? Is drooling excessively? FREE DENTAL Or is not eating the way it used to? These symptoms can all be related to dental disease. Over the month of July, VetEnt are promoting dental awareness in companion animals. As part of the promotion we encourage all CHECKS FOR THE our clients to take advantage of getting a free dental examination for their pets. In addition to the free consultation we have many in-clinic specials on dental vaccinations and dental products which will help you to maintain oral MONTH OF JULY hygiene at home. By Sharon Hodgson What is periodontal disease? This is when reversible dental disease continues to such an extent that the ligaments holding the tooth in place are compromised. Periodontal disease is a painful and progressive infl ammatory condition involving Free Dental Check ups for your pet bacteria attacking the gums, ligament and bony tissues which surround and support the teeth. (Bookings Essential) How does dental disease start and progress? Some animals are lucky to have a natural resistance to tartar and calculi build up and subsequent periodontal disease. Others are not so fortunate. Dental disease initially starts with plaque build-up. • Vaccination discounts for dental disease Plaque is an invisible slime of bacteria that forms on the tooth - it’s what makes the tooth feel ‘furry’. • Specials on all dental products in store Plaque then progresses to calculi which is a hard mineral deposit over the tooth. This deposit of hard bacteria deteriorates the structures holding the tooth in place and compromises tooth integrity. • Lots of giveaways
Why is it important to prevent and treat periodontal disease? Most of us know the agony of sore gums or tooth ache so we can imagine how an animal might feel when they experience the pain of periodontal disease. There are also proven links between dental disease and other serious systemic diseases. When gums become infl amed and bleed, bacteria in the mouth can ENTRY INTO move into the blood system. Once in circulation the bacteria move through to internal organ structures DENTAL PACKAGE with high blood fl ow ie kidneys. If bacteria lodge in these organs, they have the potential to cause great DRAW - PRIZES destruction. If the chip is signifi cant the nerve is exposed Otorohanga: 07 873 8275 causing considerable pain to the dog particularly when eating. Over time the nerve ending is dulled as the tooth fi lls with debri from the mouth. Eventually the pain may dull (but at which point?) but the debris sitting in the tooth is now packing down into the open tooth canal ready to cause abcessation. The time frame for this to occur is anyone’s guess. Please consider the discomfort the dog has endured and have chipped and broken teeth seen by your vet or vet nurse.

Laura Sinclair showed she has plenty of strings to her bow winning the Waikato Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools’ senior girls’ crosscountry title. The multi-talented Te Awamutu Col- lege seventh former was fresh from winning the 800m, 1500m middle dis- tance double at the equivalent athletics championships. She converted that form for an emphatic victory in the 4km crosscountry event, held in splendid conditions at Taupo. The crosscountry championships attracted fields of around 70 in most races. Despite the presence of New Zealand representative Camille Buscomb of Cam- bridge, Sinclair took the lead the first time up the hill at the 600m mark and was never headed. She drew away from the field to win by more than 100 metres. Coach Murray Green says the man- ner of her victory was stunning ... ‘‘Years of effort are now being rewarded.’’ It was a good day for the coach, although he did have mixed emotions watching the intermediate girls’ 3km event. Te Awamutu’s Andre Peake finished fourth, not far behind the second and third placed runners, while the race was won by another of his athletes, Jenna Hansen from Cambridge. Peake led early but Hansen took over and slowly eased away for a comfortable win. Manaia Topfer finished sixth in the junior boys’ 3km race after settling about 20th and working his way up the field before winning a sprint for a ‘top six’ spot. Green says Topfer is a good prospect for the future. Offer valid only while stocks last. Matthew Towers placed 20th in the intermediate boys’ 4km and Sam Fuchs 17th in the senior boys’ 6km, won by Hauraki’s impressive New Zealand
representative Aaron Pulford. 6294748AA Sinclair, Peake and Hansen all com- 132 Kihikihi Rd, Te Awamutu TC230608SP11 peted in the New Zealand Secondary ILANA WILKS MARK PENNY (0275) 445 262 www.wilksbrooke.co.nz OUT ON HER OWN: Laura Sinclair has no rivals in sight as Schools’ Championships at New Ply- Phone 871 3079 (0274) 310 880 she nears the finish line in the senior girls’ crosscountry. mouth last weekend.
