College and University Section Report to NLA October 2010

2010 C&U Section Officers:

Committees for 2010 were:

Four board meetings were held since the annual meeting. Meeting locations included UNMC, UNO, Grace University, and most recently, Union College, the site of the upcoming C & U spring meeting. Chairs of the C & U Committees were encouraged to attend the board meetings.

The items placed on a flash drive related to the C & U Section last year were moved to a Wiki. Currently the board members and committee chairs have access to the Wiki.

Charity Martin and Marie Reidelbach compiled a survey using Survey Monkey to assess the educational needs of the C & U membership. The survey was emailed to 158 members with 59 completed responses. A summary of the results was posted on the C & U Website linked from http://www.nebraskalibraries.org/cu/

Grants and awards were given to the following C & U members this past year. Rachel Erb, UNO received the Spring Professional Development Grant Award to attend ALA. A summary of her experience is linked from the C & U Website. Judith Wolfe, UNL received the C & U Research Grant for her research titled “Meeting the Early Career Librarian for Tenure Process: A Mixed Method Study.” Glenda Wilson, UNK received the Fall Professional Development Grant Award to attend IUG in 2011. Mavel Maring, UNO received her funding one year late for the 2009 Spring Professional Development Grant to attend IFLA. A summary of her experience is linked from the C & U Website. The Spring C & U meeting was held on May 14 on the UNO Campus. The theme was “The Library of 2morr.O” with 58 registrants for the conference. Michael Teets, Vice President of Innovation at OCLC, was the keynote speaker. A panel of four library directors including Robin Bernstein, Jim Bothmer, Joan Giesecke, and Audrey DeFrank took place after lunch followed by contributed papers and lightning rounds. Overall the evaluations were positive and the meeting made a profit of $889.45.

The section sponsored six programs for the NLA / NEMA fall conference held in Grand Island October 13-15. The C & U Section donated $75 to support the Scavenger Hunt at the fall meeting. The C & U Section provided a table at the non-profit exhibit to promote membership of the section, ACRL and the upcoming spring meeting. A poster and call for papers/posters was provided to encourage members to attend as well as participate in the meeting.

The 2011 spring meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 20 on the Union College campus in Lincoln, Ne. The theme is “The Next Step: Creating the Library of the Future” building upon the 2010 meeting. Programming will concentrate on offering concrete ideas and planning for librarians to start using new technology within the context of their own institutions, each with its own set of problems and constraints.

Three nominations were received for the C & U Distinguished Service Award this year. The board approved Joan Giesecke to receive the award for all of her contributions to academic libraries this past year.
