Federal Republic of Germany
Federal Republic of Germany National Affairs J_ HE EVENTS OF 1991 IN GERMANY were dominated by the process of unification. The two German states had been formally reunited on October 3, 1990, and the first all-German national elections were held in December. The resounding victory for the incumbent Christian Democrats and Liberals (CDU/CSU-FDP) led to the reelection of Helmut Kohl as the first all-German chancellor since 1945, on January 18. Despite its strength in the national elections, the conservative CDU did poorly in local elections that followed, largely to the advantage of the Social Demo- crats (SPD). Some of the strength of the SPD, however, simply derived from a weakening of the CDU, because in several of these elections, the Christian Demo- crats lost voters to stronger radical right parties. This became especially apparent in Bremen, where in the September state elections the Deutsche Volksunion (DVU), the right-wing party led by the notorious Gerhard Frey, made surprising gains. With the opening of the East German market, the West German economy experi- enced a boom. At the same time, major changes in industry took place in Germany's so-called Five New Lander, the states of the former German Democratic Republic. In April, the last GDR automobiles—Trabant and Wartburg—rolled off the assem- bly lines. Volkswagen assembly plants were scheduled to open in Mosel and Chem- nitz in 1993. In the same month, the East German airline Interflug made its last flight and was then taken over by Lufthansa. The shutting down of most large industrial and agricultural units in the east led to massive unemployment—which climbed to over a million, or 12.1 percent, in July—and underemployment. -

Yiddish Leben CD 6 of the series “So klingt Owenglie” (The Sounds of Ober-Gleen) Concept of the audiobook by Monika Felsing, all rights reserved 01. Veronika Bloemers (piano) and singers, Synagogue of Ober-Gleen, rehearsal, Hashivenu (first part). 02. Since the late Thirties, noone had sung Jewish songs any more in the Synagogue of Ober- Gleen. The Congregation has ceased to exist. The Synagogue, built in 1873 on Obergasse 48, had been a blacksmith’s working place and a storage room for decades. Newly renovated, it is a house of culture now, its interior lighter than linen cloth. In September 2017, Veronika Bloemers is rehearsing here with a little choir for the first premiere after 80 years. „Hashivenu“ ist a mourning song, a verse of the prophet Jeremia after the destruction of the temple of Jerusalem, written in exile in Babylon: „Lead us back, G-d, to you. We wish to return. Renew our days as they have been.“ 03. Veronika Bloemers (piano) and singers, Synagogue of Ober-Gleen, rehearsal, Hashivenu (sec- ond part). 04. Matthias Eislöffel, a relative of Schmidds Kall, the former blacksmith Karl Fröhlich, knows the building. 05. Matthias Eislöffel talks about family feasts in the blacksmith’s shop in the Seventies. 06. The Jewish community was small, too small to have a rabbi and soon also too small for its own teacher. Around 1900, the Jewish communities of Ober-Gleen and Kirtorf were looking for an unmarried candidate for the position of a religious teacher, someone who would sing and pray and kill animals according to the religious rules. -

A History of the Jews in Bickenbach and Southern Hesse
Karl Schemel About this book t Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, the heroic memorial for the Holocaust, the memory of three Jewish fellow-citizensA from Bickenbach who were victims of the Nazi terror, lives on – Rosel Wolf, aged 12, and her parents, Benno and Settchen Wolf, were murdered in a camp in Minsk, Belorussia, in 1941 or 1942. This book, which is about the history of the Jews in Bickenbach and in southern Hesse, is dedicated to their memory. After intensive study and years of research, Karl Schemel, the author of the book and mayor of Bickenbach, has set out a lasting literary monument for the former Jewish citizens. Based on the earliest reports of Jewish life in Bickenbach, he reconstructs the history of the Jews in the region over the centuries, who found their terrible end in Nazi persecution. This book remembers the fate of many Jewish families from Bickenbach and neighbouring communities, drawing an impressive picture of the culture, religion and language of Jews of southern Hesse, and reminds us of still visible traces of Jewish history in the nearby region. Numerous illustrations also depict the lives of Jewish families and communities. In countless conversations, Karl Schemel has collected information that inevitably would have been forgotten without this book, and he has made and maintained contact with families of the survivors – in the knowledge that “planting a small seed of possible friendship requires care and assistance from every side, as well as constant attention”.
