The composition of the Executive Committee makes provision for three student assessors. The Assessors are as follows: 1. President of UMSU (or designate) term: May 1, 2010 - April 30, 2011 2. President of GSA (or designate) term: May 1,2010 - April 30, 2011 3. Student Senator appointed by caucus of Student Senators term: May 1, 2010 - April 30, 2011 2. The composition of the Executive Committee makes provision one elected Student member of Senate Executive Committee. A candidate for this position is nominated by the caucus of Student Senators at Senate. Term for this position: May 1, 2010 - April 30, 2011 Procedures: (a) A nomination for the position shall be provided by the Student Senate Caucus. (b) Senators shall vote by a show of hands. -3- May 26,2010 Report of the Programs and Planning Committee of the Faculty of Graduate Studies on Course and Curriculum Changes Preamble 1. The Faculty of Graduate Studies has responsibility for all matters relating to the submission of graduate course, curriculum and program changes. Recommendations for new programs or program changes are submitted by the Faculty Council of Graduate Studies for the approval of Senate. 2. In October 2007, the Faculty of Graduate Studies approved a process of Streamlining Course Introductions, Modifications, & Deletions which allows the Executive Committee to approve these changes in lieu of Faculty Council when the courses are not associated with a new program or program changes. 3. The Faculty of Graduate Studies Executive Committee voted via email on May 261h to consider proposals from the Master of Physician Assistant Studies and Dept. of Family Social Sciences. Observations 1. The Master of Physician Assistant Studies, Faculty of Medicine, proposes the introduction of one course, PAEP 7150 Year 1 Comprehensive Examination (0), and the deletion of one course, PAEP 7400 National Certification Examination (0). The professional certification exam is not an appropriate requirement for a degree program. PAEP will administer a program-administered comprehensive didactic examination at the erid of Year 1 of the program. 2. The Dept. of Family Social Sciences, Faculty of Human Ecology, proposes the deletion of two courses, FMLY 7900 Understanding the Inner City: Processes (3) and FMLY 7910 Understanding the Inner City: Issues (3), and the introduction of two courses, FMLY 7920 Globalization, Families and Communities (3) and FMLY 7930 Social Development in Theory and Practice (3). The course introductions replace the deletions and thereby fill a gap in the curriculum, which was identified by an internal curriculum review in 2008/09. The Dept. of Family Social Sciences has inquired with the Depts. of Sociology and Political Studies, Social Work and the Natural Resources Institute to ensure that there is no overlap in course content between the units. ~~mments of the Senate Executive Committee. e Senate Executive Committee endorses . the report to Senate. -4- Recommendations The Executive Committee recommends THAT: the course and program changes from the units listed below be approved by Senate: Master of Physician Assistant Studies Dept. of Family Social Sciences Respectfully submitted, Dean J. It has been implicated as one cause of inequality, indebtedness, marginalization, unemployment and homelessness. This course examines how responses to the challenges and opportunities of globalization affect the well-being of families and communities. FML Y 7930 Social Development in Theory and Practice +3 This advanced seminar examines the concepts and practices of social development in the real world. Specifically, it examines the interplay between theory and practice and the epistemological underpinnings of social development research, programs, and policies as applied to families and communities. Case studies are assessed and critiqued. His contributions to mathematics are varied and numerous. He has not only contributed to the mathematical literature as a prominent researcher but has fostered mathematics through his teaching and guidance of young people, his organizatimal skills and his publishing expertise. The following briefly addresses some of the areas where Ralph Stanton has made major contributions. Mathematics at the University of Waterloo In 1957, Professor Stanton took the courageous step of leaving the University of Toronto and joining the embryonic University of Waterloo. At that time, he was the entire Mathematics Department. When he left Waterloo nine years later, in 1946, he had formed a Faculty of Mathematics which is now recognized as one of the major research centres in Canada. He was able to do this because of his own stature, which allowed him to attract excellent colleagues; his tireless energy in teaching and research; and his general dedication to excellence. In addition to his work in Mathematics, he served as Dean of Graduate Studies in the University and helped in building up many other areas besides Mathematics. Since his departure from Waterloo, he has undertaken the task of building up Computer Science at the University of Manitoba, and he has succeeded in forming a strong research group there. Contrihtions to speciiic disciplines Trofessor Stanton’s first love was Statistics, an area in which there was a great shortage twenty-five years ago; he trained many statisticians personally, and built up the nucleus of the present Waterloo department, which is now among the strongest statistical research groups in Canada.

    RALPH GORDON STANTON RALPH GORDON STANTON (October 21, 1923 - April 21, 2010) Ralph Gordon Stanton passed away quietly April 21, 2010, in St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 86, of cardiac arrest. Ralph always preferred an uncomplicated life, and asked for little more than a shelf of good books, his stamp collection, a tasty meal, and congenial company. His 64 year academic career was marked by many achievements and honours, and he will long be remembered for his teaching, mentorship and supervisory skills, and for his philanthropic generosity. Ralph Stanton, Canadian mathematician, teacher, scholar and pioneer in mathematics and computing education, was born in 1923 in Lambeth, Ontario. Eldest of four, Ralph was followed by his sister Elsie, who passed away a few years ago. He is survived by a sister Marion, and a brother Frank. Ralph's impressive curriculum vitae speaks for his integrity, patience, perseverance, and loyalty. He started at the University of Western Ontario (BA in Math and Physics, 1944) and went on to study at the University of Toronto (MA, PhD, 1945 and 1948), where he taught from 1946 to 1957. In 1957, Ralph chose to move to Kitchener-Waterloo to work on a planned expansion of Waterloo College that would include co-operative education. A man of great foresight, he realized the potential of such a development at a time when it was belittled by most. The expansion soon became the fledgling University of Waterloo, now regarded as one of the best institutions in Canada, and Ralph's energy and efforts played a significant role in the early development that led to future success.
