The News Around Us Jan 31 2021 Biden Sasses Fox News' Peter Doocy Over Question About Putin Lindsey Ellefson TheWrap Joe Biden peter Doocy President Joe Biden got sassy with Fox News' Peter Doocy Tuesday when the White House correspondent asked him about a recent call with Russian president Vladimir Putin. "Mr. President," called out Doocy, who covered Biden during the 2020 presidential campaign. "What did you talk to Vladimir Putin about?" Biden quipped, "You. He sends his best!" Other assembled journalists laughed as Biden put on his face mask and exited the briefing. The moment came one day after Biden called on Doocy during a different briefing, saying, "I know he always asks me tough questions and he always has an edge to them, but I like him anyway, so go ahead and ask the question." Amid a series of staffing and scheduling shakeups, Fox News announced earlier this month that White House correspondent John Roberts would be leaving the West Wing to host his own hour-long program on the cable network. Doocy was announced as the channel's new White House correspondent shortly thereafter. He joins colleague Kristin Fisher in the briefing room. Prior to covering Biden's campaign for Fox News, Doocy worked on coverage of the Democratic primary field. He first joined Fox News as a general assignment reporter in 2009 just after graduating from Villanova University. An equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccine must include noncitizens Rep. Raúl M. JOHN TLUMACKI/GLOBE STAFF Concerned that too many students are attempting to learn from home, Governor Charlie Baker on Friday made his biggest push yet for schools to reopen classrooms — even in communities like Boston where coronavirus cases have been surging — issuing a new set of rules that strongly discourages remote learning. In making the announcement, Baker upended previous state guidance that had urged school districts to shift learning online if coronavirus positivity rates put communities at high risk for widespread transmission. Now, under the new state rules, districts should close schools or classrooms only as a “last resort” — when there is evidence of transmission or in communities where COVID-19 positivity rates are exceptionally high. Only Chelsea, Lawrence, and Revere, have positivity rates that are high enough to rely exclusively on remote learning, according to state officials. Currently, more than half of the state’s 950,000 public school students are doing all their learning from home, while many of the remaining students are receiving instruction at home part time.

Doctors Investigate Mysterious Brain Disease Cluster in Canada by Mary F. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a degenerative brain disorder that causes personality changes, anxiety, depression and memory loss. The disorder, which can occur spontaneously or be inherited, can eventually lead to dementia and death. Officials in Canada are trying to find the cause of a mysterious brain disease, which resembles Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and has affected more than 40 people in the New Brunswick province. According to a report by Live Science. Canadian officials first alerted doctors in the New Brunswick area that they were evaluating 43 cases of an unknown neurological disease. Even though the first case was identified back in 2015, there have been a rising number of cases in recent years, with 24 cases reported in 2020 and six reported so far this year. Five deaths have also been associated with the disease insofar. Although doctors first speculated the cases were Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, tests conducted so far do not show any evidence of the disease. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is caused by prions, a type of protein that can cause normal proteins in the brain to fold abnormally. Prion diseases, which can affect both humans and animals, can sometimes be spread to humans through infected meat products.
