D.C. 20202- SUMMARY: The Federal School Code List of Participating Institutions for the 2000-2001 Award Year. Dear Partner: Enclosed is the 2000-2001 Federal School Code List containing the unique codes assigned by the Department of Education to all institutions participating electronically in the Title IV student aid programs. The list is organized by state and alphabetically by institution within each state. These codes will be used by students applying for financial aid using the 2000-2001 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), 2000-2001 Renewal FAFSA, 2000-2001 FAFSA Express, 2000-2001 FAFSA on the Web, or 2000-2001 Renewal FAFSA on the Web application. The FAFSA instructs students to enter the name and Federal School Code for the schools that should receive your information. Students can check with their college financial aid office, their high school guidance counselor, or the public library to look up the Federal School Code. Use of the Federal School Code will significantly improve the student's ability to communicate college identifications accurately, will avoid errors caused by confusion over similar college names, and speed application processing time. Please make this list available to students. If you would like an additional copy of the Federal School Code List please call 1-800-433-3243 or you can do an on-line search from the Department of Education's Web Page at: http://www.ed.gov If you have any questions about the list, please contact the Application Processing Division at (202) 260-9988. Sincerely, Jean$ Van Vlandren eral Manager for Students EST COPYAVNLM LE 3 USING THE FEDERAL SCHOOL CODE LIST The Federal School Code List that follows is intended as a resource for anyone who is completing a 2000-2001 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), 2000-2001 Renewal FAFSA, 2000-2001 FAFSA Express, 2000-2001 FAFSA on the Web, or 2000- 2001 Renewal FAFSA on the Web application. When answering 2000-2001 FAFSA college name and address questions, applicants should use the official Federal School Code and name found in this list to ensure fast and accurate processing. You can also access the Federal School Code List on the Department of Education's Web Page at: http://www.ed.gov You can use the 2000-2001 FAFSA Express software to apply for financial aid and the FAFSA Express software can be downloaded from the same address. The FAFSA Express software contains the Federal School Code List and you can use it to do a search for a particular school and its code. All postsecondary schools that are currently eligible for Title IV aid and signed up to participate electronically are listed in the Federal School Code List, with each school's official Federal School Code, name, and address. The schools are listed first by state and then alphabetically by name within each state. Procedures for completing the FAFSA college name and address question are listed below. For each school that applicants wish to list in question 88, 90, 92, 94, 96, and 98 of the 2000-2001 FAFSA, do the following: 1.Find the correct state of the desired school, using the appropriate state name. 2.Find the exact name and address of the desired school within the state listing. • Checklist of the Millipeds of North and Middle America 3
Introduction Wenn sich die Weisen nicht zuweilen verirteten, so m ssten alle Narren versagen. .Johann Wolfgang von Goethe I may freely, without shame, leave some obscurities to happier industry, or future information. .Samuel Johnson Checklists and catalogues are regarded with disdain by some biologists who consider them mere hackwork, compiled from literature and devoid of phylogenetic insights. Systematists who are actually involved in transferring knowledge about the characteristics, relationships, and distribution of poorly-known organisms from the alpha to gamma level (thus making it accessible to theoreticians) tend to be more generous. There are no references more fundamental than comprehensive summaries of current knowledge, and the efforts of assembling and organizing information from a vast polyglot literature into a compact and manageable form are highly appreciated by subsequent users. A checklist or catalog is often the catalyst that initiates or stimulates active interest in some neglected taxon, and whether one concurs with the details of presentation is immaterial so long as all the facts are available. It is often overlooked that the basic purpose of such compendia is to facilitate their own obsolescence. An increasing interest in tropical biotas during the past several decades allows a guarded hope that the importance of millipeds in such ecosystems will be recognized and investigated. Although three annotated checklists have been published (West Indies: Chamberlin, 1918; North America: Chamberlin & Hoffman, 1958, and Middle America: Loomis, 1968 respectively), they are now obsolete and inadequate. As the faunas of these regions are now amenable to a revised treatment, this occasion is taken to provide a comprehensive, updated, summary of the diplopod fauna of the entire area north of the South American mainland.
