  • Adelaide Arcade and Gays Arcade
Heritage of the City of Adelaide ADELAIDE ARCADE AND GAYS ARCADE 112-120 Grenfell Street, 111-117 Rundle Mall, 15-23 Twin Street Adelaide and Gays arcades are fine late examples of the 1880s boom period. They are a testimony to the period during which Rundle Street was transformed into a retail area of great renown. Other significant nineteenth century shopping establishments have been lost or altered: John Martins (rebuilt), Charles Birks (replaced by David Jones) and Myers (much altered over time and recently demolished for redevelopment). The arcades rank with the Strand Arcade in Sydney and the Block Arcade in Melbourne as examples of the most urbane approach to retailing devised up to their time. The foundation stone of Adelaide Arcade was laid on 6 May 1885 by the mayor (W. Bundey) who stated that it ' . afforded him very much pleasure to lay the stone of the first Arcade erected in Adelaide'. The design by Withall and Wells is the most important of their work to have survived. Their schemes which included Charles Birks, the Jubilee Exhibition Building and the Adelaide Racing Club Grandstand show the use being made of cast-iron for both structural and decorative reasons. The extensive use made of cast-iron, plate glass and electric light suggests that the architectural firm was extremely progressive and able to respond to design requirements with new construction materials and techniques. #B E AC 11 # D:\P H O TO _CD \IM AG E S \IM G 00 19.P CD 63 4330 4139 74 86 9623 550 86 9623 550 P B4 0 8 6 37 7 25 1 0 (CD Ref 3974/19) Adelaide Arcade was opened on 12 December 1885 by the governor.

INTRODUCTION As a component of the Australian Government’s Schools Compliance and Accountability Framework (Schools Assistant Act, 2008), all schools are required to report to their communities on a range of matters and make this information publicly available. This report satisfies Eynesbury Senior College’s obligation to provide school performance information. 2. CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION Eynesbury is a senior secondary college – for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 – expressly geared to prepare students for university entrance and beyond – as such it is not a comprehensive school, and offers subjects designed to accommodate tertiary entrance. Eynesbury Senior College provides students with not simply the pathway to a university education, but with the means to succeed at tertiary study. To that end Eynesbury aims to inculcate into its student cohort an independent learning ethos – the student curriculum, timetable and support structures emulate as closely as possible the atmosphere students will encounter when at university – students do not wear uniforms and teachers are addressed on a first name basis, the school day begins at 8:35am and finishes at 5:10pm, lessons are two-hours in duration, and academic reports are aimed at students (in the first person) with copies sent to parents/care-givers.
