CARLETON UNIVERSITY JUDAISM AND GENDER COLLEGE OF THE HUMANITIES RELI 3131B: WINTER 2015 RELIGION PROGRAM MONDAYS 11:35-2:25 Office: Paterson Hall 2a49 Dr Deidre Butler [email protected] Phone: 613-520-2600 ext 8106 Office hours Mondays: 2:30-3:30 and by appointment Description: Using a selection of interdisciplinary case studies, this 3000 level seminar explores the status and role of gender in Jewish life. From biblical sources, to historical examples, to contemporary debates, this course invites students to engage the study of Judaism through this contentious category. We will explore the topic of Judaism and Gender as a lens that is helpful for studying Judaism and Jewish life from a variety of perspectives. The first and dominant focus will be on the experience of gender as it as been described and prescribed in Jewish life; by rabbinic authorities and communal institutions. The second focus will be on key historical examples where gender is particularly useful for understanding the social and cultural context of Jewish experience. Finally, we will think critically about the ways in which contemporary debates around gender resonate through and are reshaped in Jewish life. Throughout the course primary sources, scholarly analyses, and film sources will be used to introduce students to gendered dimensions of Jewish life and aid us in critically reflecting on the status of gender in Jewish life and thought. Also available for online and telephone appointments at other times. Please contact by email to book. Online class meeting time: Wednesdays 11:30-2:30 (normally 11:30 – 1 pm) Although you should block off the full 3 hours for our class meeting, most online meetings will be 90 minutes. It is hard to be online and “present” for more than 90 minutes and we will all work together to move through our discussions and activities efficiently to complete class activities in that period. There are weeks when we will need more time (i.e. the first two class meetings). I will do my best to signal that to you in advance. You are expected to stay online with the class until class discussions are complete (always by 2:25 pm). Class meeting location: Zoom (single link to use for all classes is on CULearn) and is available only to students in this course. Please do not share. Course Description: This online seminar in the academic study of religion explores film as a rich site for thinking about religion generally and religion and public life specifically. As such our approach to film is grounded in religious studies and is separate from and fully distinct from the approaches of film studies. We will view and critically reflect on a series of films, in class (online together) and outside of class, including documentary and narrative film, Hollywood, independent, Canadian and world cinema. -

												Israeli Religious Communities
The Cinema and Literature of Israeli Religious Communities Yael Shenker Over the past two decades there has been a growing phenomenon of artists identified with religious communities in Israel. They work in a variety of art forms, including cinema, music, prose, poetry, dance, theatre, and plastic art. This phenomenon is interesting not only because it reveals changes unfolding within Israeli religious communities, but also because it reflects serves changes in the relationship between religion and nationalism. Also, of great interest are the changing perceptions of gender inside and outside of the religious communities. The course deals with literary and cinematic texts that were created by those identified with religious communities in Israel and those who live on the borderline between religious and secular. Through our discussion of a number of critical themes in Israeli religious discourse (sexuality, gender, relations with the secular world, etc.), we will also consider the borders of Israeli religious discourse, as well as the alternative and critical voices both within and outside the community. Student outcomes Students examine the complexities and continual transformations of religious discourse in Israel. Students come to understand the ways in which films both reflect as well as often challenge religious life and ideas Students consider the way in which religious directors struggle with the limits of representation Students will study how feminism has begun to challenge religious life and ideas Students will consider the complex connections between religion and nationality in Israel Course requirements - Attendance and participation (10% - Written commentary on the weekly readings (20%) - Two five-page papers (35% each) Course program Introduction.
