Wednesday, November 18, 1987 Help is on the way for basketball team By Mike Boland Daily Campus Staff The Big East Conference is entering it's ninth season of basketball competition. As one of the conference's seven charter members, UConn has seen all of the great players - up close and personal, you might say - on the floor. The only problem is, UConn has seen most of those great players wearing the oppositions' uniforms. Only the Huskies and Seton Hall have never tasted life at the top half of the Big East standings. Losing conference games has become very much a way of life for UConn hoop fans. But finally, there is a light at the end of the Big East tunnel, and it doesn't seem to be just be a flicker of hope. The light is flashing, strong and steady, with the message that relief from the basketball blahs is not far away. In the past, UConn had been the lame sister of the conference in terms of recruiting. A Big East All-Star team could be made up of Connecticut high school players who sought their college hoops and degrees other than at their state school. Boston College boasted Jay Murphy of Meriden and Michael Adams of Hartford on their rosters three years ago. Villanova had Trumbull's Harold Jensen and Mystic's Harold Presslcy on their 1985 national championship team, not to mention Wethersfield's John Pinone the year before. And it wasn't just the in-state kids that UConn couldn't land. No one wanted to come to Storrs, it seemed. Then Jim Calhoun took over. Calhoun, who had 14 very successful years as head coach at Northeastern that included five trips to the NCAA tournament, was hired in 1986 to take over the leaky boat that was the UConn basketball program, and in one year has the program holding its UConn freshman Murray Williams, the No. 1 high school basketball player in chin high.
