  • Past BMW Championship Winners Rory Mcilroy, Zach Johnson and Camilo Villegas Attempted to Recreate Arnold Palmer’S Historic Drive Off the 1St Tee from the 1960 U.S
For Release: September 3, 2014 Contact: Stacy Morris Corporate Communications Manager BMW of North America, LLC (201) 370-5134 (m) [email protected] Past BMW Championship winners Rory McIlroy, Zach Johnson and Camilo Villegas Attempted to Recreate Arnold Palmer’s Historic Drive Off the 1st Tee from the 1960 U.S. Open at Cherry Hills Country Club to Kick-Off the 2014 BMW Championship. The 2014 BMW Championship Takes Place in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado, September 4 – September 7. Woodcliff Lake, N.J. (September 3, 2014) – BMW Championship winners Rory McIlroy, Zach Johnson and Camilo Villegas attempted to recreate Arnold Palmer’s historic drive from Cherry Hills Country Club’s 1st tee to kick-off the 2014 BMW Championship. The recreation was a nod to Palmer’s legendary tee shot during the 1960 U.S. Open at Cherry Hills, when he drove the green at the 346-yard, Par-4 1st hole, sparking his memorable comeback win. Hunter Mahan, 2013 BMW Championship Hole-in-One player, and PGA TOUR Player Keegan Bradley, also attempted to recreate the famous shot. Each player used a replica Persimmon driver, with a steel shaft and a wood head, from the same era used by Palmer during the 1960 U.S. Open at the 346-yard, Par-4 1st hole, sparking his memorable comeback win. Though no player was able to successfully replicate Palmer’s shot, BMW made an additional $10,000 donation to the Evans Scholars Foundation, which grants full college scholarships to young deserving caddies of financial need. McIlroy came the closest to the green with a 300-yard drive.

DeChambeau, Johnson join field at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — (August 20, 2019): The No. 9-ranked player in the world and a two-time Major Championship winner are among the latest commitments to the player field for A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, which will take place Sept. 9-15, at America’s Resort™. Bryson DeChambeau and Zach Johnson will both be a part of the 156- player field for the first event of the 2019-2020 season. DeChambeau has already won five times on the PGA TOUR and is currently ranked ninth in the Official World Golf Rankings. He will be making his second trip to The Greenbrier, after finishing T14 in 2017 at 8-under-par for the tournament. A California native who now lives in Dallas, Texas, the 25-year-old DeChambeau is known as “The Scientist,” because of his analytical approach to the game. His irons and wedges are all cut to exactly the same length. Only the lofts are different. In 2015, DeChambeau became the fifth player in history to win both the NCAA Division I championship and the U.S. Amateur in the same year, an exclusive club that includes Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Ryan Moore. His first professional win came at the John Deere Classic in 2017, and he won four times in 2018 — the Memorial Tournament, The Northern Trust, the Dell Technologies Championship and the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Johnson, 43, has 12 career PGA TOUR wins since turning professional in 1998.

UNLIKE GODOT, THE NEXT GREAT GOLFER ALWAYS SHOWS UP By Ron Sirak • @ronsirak Dec. 12, 2016 Comparing greatness in any sport across generations is pretty much useless since there is no way to factor in changes in equipment, conditioning, coaching and the quality of competition. But history does teach us there is no shortage of genius. Brilliance surfaces sparingly but regularly. In my opinion, golf has produced five dominant players since the U.S. Open joined the Open as a major championship around the turn of the last century. And each dominant player had specific challengers, except for Tiger Woods, who faced a rivalry by committee. In 1900, Harry Vardon made the U.S. Open the fourth of his seven career majors at the age of 30. In 1930, Bobby Jones won the U.S. and British Opens and the U.S. and British Amateurs at 28 then retied to finish with seven pro majors and six amateur titles. In 1950, Ben Hogan, 37, picked up the fourth of his nine majors at the U.S. Open. In 1970, Jack Nicklaus, 30, got the eighth of his 18 pro majors at the Open Championship. In 2000, Woods, 24, won the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship to get to five in a major total that now stands at 14. There is a clear cycle of greatness that produces a breakout player about every 20 to 30 years. By that standard, we are 16 years into the Woods cycle. In addition to the cyclical emergence of a great player there is also the recurrent pattern of a three-way rivalry.

  • 2015 TOUR Championship
TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola Player Capsules - Updated: 9/21/2015 12:03 PM Jason Day – No. 1 (2,000 points) Jason Day’s breakthrough season has included five victories, his first major title at the PGA Championship and a climb to No. 1 in the FedExCup standings and Official World Golf Ranking. The five-time winner joins just four others – Tom Watson (1980), Nick Price (1994), Vijay Singh (2004) and Tiger Woods (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2013) as the only players to have won five or more times in a season since 1980. The 27-year-old Australian won in February at the Farmers Insurance Open in a four-man playoff. He appeared to be heading into contention at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, but vertigo symptoms from an inner-ear infection kept him from playing his best down the stretch. Day finished the event T9. His next tournament, The Open Championship at St. Andrews, his birdie putt at the final hole finished one rotation from going in and putting him in a playoff. He came back the next week, however, to win for the second time of the season at the RBC Canadian Open. After a T12 at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, Day’s breakthrough win at a major championship came with a dominant victory at the PGA Championship. Day’s victory at Whistling Straits followed six top-five finishes in major championships in the last four years. The win moved him to No. 2 in the FedExCup standings.
