GET 51304 CLIPSE Hell Hath No Fury LP PRESSED ON In the 4 years after The Clipse dropped their sophomore classic Lord Willin’ the duo was able to build a legacy that had WHITE VINYL! fans hungry for new material. After the smoke cleared and they hit the studio the Virginia brothers recorded the confidently SIDE A mature sophomore effort, Hell Hath No Fury. Best known for 1. We Got It For Cheap (Intro) their unconventional radio smash “Grindin’,” Clipse are no strangers to taking risks with the boundary-pushing Neptunes, 2. Momma I’m So Sorry who return as trusted co-pilots for Hell Hath No Fury. As 3. Mr. Me Too always the duo is right at home over The Neptunes crafted (feat. Pharrell Williams) beats which perfectly embrace Pusha’s inventive drug-game 4. Wamp Wamp (What It Do) metaphors and Malice’s soul-baring confessionals. (feat. Slim Thug) 5. Ride Around Shining From the bouncy lead single “Mr. Me Too” and the Slim Thug (feat. AB-Liva of the Re-Up Gang) assisted “Wamp Wamp” to the oddly haunting "Keys Open 6. Dirty Money Doors" to "Momma I'm Sorry", Hell Hath No Fury represents some of the duo’s best work. On the hypnotic “Keys Open SIDE B Doors,” over the eerie mix of screwed-up angelic voices, 1. Hello New World chimes and congas, the brothers run circles around the competition, while the spine-tingling boom-bap of “Ride 2. Keys Open Doors Around Shining” sets the stage for Pusha’s hilarious boasts. 3. Ain’t Cha Whether rhyming over distorted, lo-fi guitar plucks (“Dirty (feat. Re-Up Gang) Money”) or overblown 808s (“Trill”), the brothers come with 4. Trill colorful references and inventive word play that easily places 5. Chinese New Year them in a lyrical class of their own. Get On Down now proudly (feat. Re-Up Gang) issues this Neptunes produced favorite on LP for the first time 6. Nightmares ever with the first run on white vinyl. (feat. Bilal & Pharrell Williams) CAT. RAPITALISM by MARTIN D. SMITH B.S. University of Washington, 2003 A thesis proposal submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Sociology in the College of Sciences at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Fall Term 2006 © 2006 Martin D. Smith ii ABSTRACT My paper questions the degree to which the hip hop subculture is oppositional to mainstream American society and its ideals. Toward that end, I examine the structure of the hip hop industry and its subculture. While the hip hop subculture in America consistently has projected images of rebellion and resistance to many of the mores, constraints and values of dominant society, the actual structure and organization of the hip hop subculture have mirrored, supported and promoted the values of the dominant culture in the United States. I begin by examining the structure of the main elements of the hip hop subculture: deejaying, breakdancing, emceeing and graffiti art, and the practices within each to demonstrate that the hip hop subculture has a structure which supports capitalistic practices. The interactions between hip hop industry participants, their fans, and the marketplace are an embracing of the values of mainstream American society and capitalism. From its inception, the structure of the hip hop subculture and the actions of the artists within the structure essentially has made hip hop music capitalism set to a beat. iii Dedicated to my parents, William David Smith and Elizabeth Smith iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Dr. John P. Lynxwiler, Dr. Jay Corzine, Dr.
