SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION Bureau of American Ethnology Bulletin 136 Anthropological Papers, No. 27 Music of the Indians of British Columbia By FRANCES DENSMORE FOREWORD Many tribes and locations are represented in the present work, differing from the writer's former books,^ which have generally con- sidered the music of only one tribe. This material from widely sep- arated regions was available at Chilliwack, British Columbia, during the season of hop-picking, the Indians being employed in the fields. The work was made possible by the courtesy of Canadian officials. Grateful acknowledgment is made to Dr. Duncan Campbell Scott, Deputy Superintendent General, Department of Indian Affairs at Ot- tawa, who provided a letter of credential, and to Mr. C. C. Perry, In- dian agent at Vancouver, and Indian Commissioner A. O. N. Daunt, Indian agent at New Westminster, who extended assistance and co- operation. Acknowledgment is also made of the courtesy of Walter Withers, corporal (later sergeant). Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who acted as escort between Chilliwack and the hop camp, and as- sisted the work in many ways. Courtesies were also extended by municipal officers in Chilliwack and by the executive office of the Columbia Hop Co., in whose camp the work was conducted. This is the writer's first musical work in Canada and the results are important as a basis of comparison between the songs of Canad- ian Indians and those of Indians residing in the United States. Given the unpromising projections, voices of resistance, anger, frustration, uncertainty, and hope are becoming increasingly visible on the island’s cities’ walls and spaces. Thus, based on the current situation of fiscal crisis, this visual essay narrates and documents the continuum of interpretations and opinions regarding the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) inscribed in the urban fabric over the past five years from now. Keywords: street art, bankruptcy, fiscal crisis, austerity, Puerto Rico Resumen Desde el 2016, el Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico experimenta un período de desafíos políticos junto con una severa austeridad económica. Dadas las proyecciones, las voces de resistencia, ira, frustración, incertidumbre y esperanza son cada vez más visibles en las paredes y espacios de las ciudades de la isla. Por tanto, dada la situación actual de crisis fiscal, este ensayo visual narra y documenta el continuo de interpretaciones y opiniones sobre la Ley de Supervisión, Gestión y Estabilidad Económica de Puerto Rico (PROMESA) inscritas en el tejido urbano durante los últimos cinco años. -

SPIRITED THINGS: Sacred Arts of the Black Atlantic TRAVELING EXHIBITION SERVICE 2 SPIRITED THINGS INTRODUCTION he ruthless triangular trade that flourished between the continents of Europe, Africa, and the Americas T brought millions of enslaved Africans to the Americas, where African priests—assimilating some of the practices and beliefs of the radically new cultures they encountered—gradually adapted their ancestral religions to their people’s new and dire circumstances. The Afro-Atlantic religions are products of Africans’ long-running cosmopolitanism, and represent a complex, syncretic response to the tragic beginnings of globalization. This exhibition explores a family of religions that emerged from the centuries-long turmoil and diaspora of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. TRAVELING EXHIBITION SERVICE 3 4 SPIRITED THINGS SPIRITED THINGS: Spirited Things explores a family of religions that evolved in the context SACRED ARTS OF of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. At its root are the ancestors of the Yorùbá people and their gods, called òrìṣà (in Yorùbá), orichas (Spanish), orixás THE BLACK ATLANTIC (Portuguese), or orishas (English). West African monarchs and merchants invoked the òrìṣà in rituals of healing and for the protection of their interests in the coastal trade with their European counterparts. Later, West Africans enslaved in the Caribbean and South America adapted these same gods to their own, more existential needs of mutual assistance, healing, and spiritual uplift, often in defiance of their captors’ attempts to suppress their ancestral traditions. They disguised and amplified their continued worship of African gods by combining them with similar Roman Catholic saints and indigenous spirits. This blending of African, European, and Native American iconography and practices is a hallmark of the religions of the African diaspora, which include Haitian Vodou, Cuban Santería (also called Regla de Ocha), Brazilian Candomblé, and Caribbean Spiritism. -

Page 1 (1/31/20) Violin Sonata No. 2 in A major JOSEPH BOULOGNE, CHEVALIER DE SAINT-GEORGES (1745-1799) Composed in 1781. Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, one of music history’s most fascinating figures, was born on Christmas Day 1745 on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, where his father, a French civil servant, was stationed as comptroller-general; his mother was a black islander. The family moved to Paris when the boy was ten. Joseph was enrolled in the academy of Nicolas Texier de La Boëssière, one of France’s most renowned fencing masters, and there received a good general education as well as rigorous training in swimming, boxing, horse riding and other physical and social skills; he became one of the finest fencers in Europe. Saint-Georges’ musical education was less well documented, though he apparently had shown talent as a violinist even before leaving Guadeloupe and seems to have been a student of the celebrated composer François Gossec for several years. sHe joined Gossec’s orchestra at the Concert des Amateurs in 1769, made his debut there as a soloist three years later (in two of his own violin concertos), and became concertmaster and conductor of the group shortly thereafter. In 1777, Saint-Georges entered the employ of the Duke of Orléans, and four years later took on the additional position of concertmaster of the Concert de la Loge Olympique, for which Claude-François-Marie Rigoley, Comte d’Ogny commissioned Haydn’s “Paris” symphonies. Saint-Georges acted as intermediary in finalizing the arrangements with Haydn, and he presumably directed the premieres of the works. -
