Week 2 Elementary

Scott Albright Scott is the principal (6 years) of Bunker Hill Elementary in Berkeley County. Scott graduated in 1992 and in 1998. Prior to becoming principal of Bunker Hill, he was an assistant principal at Eagle School Intermediate for one year, an assistant principal at Musselman Middle for three years, and taught social studies at North Middle School for five years.

Sue Anderson Sue is the principal of Glade Elementary School in Webster County, where she has served as principal for twenty years. Sue received her B.A. in Early Childhood Education from and received her M.A. +45 from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. Prior to her assignment at Glade, she was an assistant principal and taught for nine years in Nicholas County. During her tenure at Glade Elementary, the school won the Exemplary Reading Program Award in 2002 by the West Virginia Reading Association. She is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders in order to expand her personal knowledge of 21st Century instructional practices.

Pamela Bailey My name is Pamela L. Bailey. I am the Principal at Spring Hill Elementary. I have been at this school for over 20 years. I have been here that long because I LOVE THIS SCHOOL! I started here as a substitute. I was first hired here as a fifth grade teacher. After spending 8 years in the fifth grade I moved to the fourth grade, where I stayed for 4 years. I was the Assistant Principal for 4 years. The rest of my years here I have been the Principal. There is no other place I would like to be at this point in my life. I have the best teachers on the planet. I have never met more dedicated people in my life. Our students are awesome. They are respectful of themselves and others. They portray the perfect example of school pride. Our building is beautiful, clean and bright. It is an atmosphere where we are comfortable to learn and to prepare our students for their successful futures.

Amber Boeckmann Amber is the principal of Berkeley Heights Elementary School in Berkeley County, WV. Amber has served as principal at Berkeley Heights for three years. Amber holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership both from West Virginia University. Prior to taking on the role of principal at Berkeley Heights, Amber worked as an assistant principal, third grade teacher, second grade teacher, and middle school math teacher all in Berkeley County. During her tenure at Berkeley Heights, she has worked diligently to move teachers toward an RtI model for teaching reading. She has also made great efforts to improve math achievement scores and to increase the utilization of technology.

Linda Burgess Education has been a major part of my life for the past 34 years. Most of my experiences have been in elementary education where I taught in grades 1-6 for 28 years. In addition to teaching, I have worked as the dean of students at Man Central and as the principal at Man Elementary. Presently, I am an assistant principal at Chapmanville Regional High School. My B.A. and M.A. degrees were both earned at . Man, WV, is where I live with my husband, Jack. We have two daughters and four beautiful grandchildren.

Joyce Cole Joyce is the principal of Sand Hill Elementary in Marshall County, where she has served as principal for 1.5 years. She holds degrees from West Liberty State College and West Virginia University with masters degrees in Speech Communication and Reading. She received her certification in administration in 2003 from West Virginia University. Prior to her appointment at Sand Hill, Joyce taught for twenty-one years in grades 1-4 at several elementary schools in Marshall County. She has taught special education at the middle school level and was a Title I Reading/Math specialist. During her time at Sand Hill, she has improved the appearance of the campus, implemented RtI in grades K-3, taught Handle on Science classes, and has written and received several grants. She is looking forward to attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders in order to expand her personal knowledge of technology and 21st Century instructional practices.

Laura Cooper Laura is the principal of Cox Landing Elementary in Cabell County, where she has served as principal for four years. Laura holds a Bachelors degree and two Masters Degrees from Marshall University. Prior to her current assignment at Cox Landing, she was an elementary teacher, special education teacher and the assistant principal at Village of Barboursville Elementary. She has introduced the school and the community in the theory of “Invitational Education”. The school will be awarded the 2008 International Alliance for Invitational Education School Award at the International Conference in September. She is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders in order to grow in the area of 21st Century instructional practices.

Todd Cutlip Mr. Cutlip is the principal of Burke Street Elementary School in Berkeley County, where he has served for two years. Todd earned a Bachelor’s degree from Shepherd College and a Master’s degree from West Virginia University. Prior to his assignment at Burke Street, he was a physical education teacher and subsequently an assistant principal for four years in Berkeley County. During his tenure at Burke Street, he has worked to improve parental involvement, researched ideas to deal with a high student mobility rate, and instituted new student expectations to achieve and reinforce positive student behaviors. He is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders in order to expand new and innovative instructional practices, and to collaborate with colleagues from different regions of the state.

Nicole Fox Mrs. Fox was born and raised in northwest Pennsylvania. She received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Computer Information Systems from Clarion University of P.A. After moving to Morgan County with a group of friends from C.U.P., she met her husband, Lance Fox. Mr. Fox is a Morgan County native who attended Pleasant View as a child. Now he is one of two assistant principals at Berkeley Springs High School. They received their masters’ degrees in education administration from Shenandoah University in 2002. The highlight of their lives was when their daughter was born. Elizabeth is four years old. They enjoy traveling, reading, going to church, visiting family/friends, being together, and playing with their dog, Copper.

Amy Jean Haines Amy Jean Haines is the principal of Springfield Green Spring and John J. Cornwell Elementary Schools in Hampshire County. Amy has been in the Hampshire County School system for thirteen years as a teacher and assistant principal. She completed her BA Degree at Davis and Elkins College and received her Masters Degree from Frostburg State University. She has received advanced administrative training from West Virginia University, Marshall University and . She is desirous of attending the 21st Century Leadership Institute to advance her knowledge of changing or up-coming instructional practices. She hopes to be able to integrate new and exciting programs in her schools in the forthcoming year.

Gary Hough Gary is currently principal of Gauley Bridge Elementary School in Fayette County, where he has served as principal for three years. Gary holds an undergraduate degree from California University of Pa. and graduate administrative degree from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. He has been a principal for twenty three years in Fayette County Schools and served as both middle an elementary school principal at several schools including Mt. Hope Middle, Fayetteville Middle, Valley Elementary, Powellton Elementary, Pax Elementary and Minden Elementary. He helped develop the first in-school wellness centers in the state during his tenure at Mt. Hope Middle and served on the National School Health Council. He has worked with the SREB on the “Making Middle Grades Matter” project while at Fayetteville Middle. He was on the development team for the WVDE for the “Life Skills” model. During his time at GBES he has helped implement a blended literacy approach to language arts and reading

Paul Huston Paul is the principal of Long Drain School in Wetzel County, where he has served as principal for nine years. Paul holds a degree from Fairmont State College with advanced administrative training from West Virginia University. Prior to his assignment at Long Drain, he was a Title I reading teacher and 2nd Grade teacher. During his tenure at Long Drain School, he has worked to guide teachers in the use of researched based instructional practices and provide quality staff development for the staff. He is interesting in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders in order to expand his personal knowledge of 21st Century instructional practices.

Fred Johnson Fred is the principal of Valley View Elementary School in Berkeley County. He has served there as principal for seven years, after serving at Inwoood Primary in Berkeley County for three years. Fred is a graduate of Nebraska Weslyan University, earning a B.A., then earned his Masters in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. Fred taught grades 3 - 5 over a period of 11 years in Lincoln. He served in various administrative positions in the Lincoln Public Schools for 14 years before relocating to Hedgesville, WV. Fred strongly believes in the teaming concept in the operation of the school and has implemented that concept at Valley View having team leaders for the various grade levels and the special ed and specialist teams. He also feels that working cooperatively with parents is a key factor in the educational process for students and seeks to develop partnerships with the parents of Valley View. Fred would like to see a shift in the primary grades from using letter grades, to a checklist evaluation which would show that students have mastered key concepts before moving into the intermediate grades.

Lee Jones Lee is the principal of Scarbro Elementary School in Fayette County, where he has served as principal for two years. Lee holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education Multi-Subjects K-8 degree from Glenville State College. He also holds a master’s degree in Reading Education PreK –Adult and a master’s degree in Leadership Studies from Marshall University Graduate College. Prior to his assignment at Scarbro Elementary School he was a Title I teacher, classroom teacher, and the principal at Nuttall Middle School. During his time at Scarbro Elementary, he has worked to implement Reading First initiatives, implement the three tier model of instruction, and provide 120 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction. He has worked to implement a 45 minute school-wide writing workshop in grades Kindergarten–Fourth.

John Lee I was born in Brooklyn, New York. I have a BA from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York in English/ Education. I have a MA from Notre Dame University in Communication Arts. I have a MA from WVU in Special Education and Education Leadership Studies. I have taught at Wheeling Central, St. Anthony’s Grade School, Genesis Alternative School and John Marshall High School. I have been principal at Union Jr. High School, Central Elementary School, and Glen Dale Elementary School.

Cameron Moffett I am in my 17th year in education. My first 9 years in education I taught in a computer/science magnet program. I have one year of experience as a third grade teacher, one year as a 7th/8th science teacher, and two years as a 4th grade teacher. I had two years experience as an administrator in Ohio in a charter school. I am currently in my second year as principal at New Haven Elementary in New Haven, WV. I received my bachelor's degree from Ohio State and my master's degree from The University of Dayton.

Boyd Mynes For the past five years, Boyd has served as the principal of Martha Elementary School in Cabell County. Degreed from WV State College, he has advanced administrative training from, Marshall University and UCLA. Previous assignments include: teacher and assistant principal at Cedar Grove Community School, principal at Rand Elementary in Kanawha as well as an assistant principal at Central City Elem. in Cabell. While at Martha he has implemented a writing process that has taken the school to the county’s top 98% and has implemented an exemplary RTI program. He is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders in order to become more knowledgeable of 21st Century instructional practices so that he may be a better informed resource for his staff.

Tana Petrucci Tana is the principal of Opequon Elementary School in Berkeley County where she has served as principal for 4 years. Tana holds a degree from Shepherd College in Political Science and Secondary Education and an administrative degree from West Virginia University. Prior to her assignment at Opequon, she was a principal at Inwood Primary for 3 years, an assistant principal at Hedgesville Middle for 10 years, and also taught 8th grade WV History and Civics for 3 years. During her tenure at Opequon Elementary, she has provided leadership to develop a school-wide guided reading program with a focus on literacy centers and balanced reading to differentiate instruction. Her school was also an RTI Pilot school using the DIBELS assessment

Mary Reisinger Mary Kay Reisinger has completed her third year as Principal at Woodsdale Elementary, Ohio County. Prior to this assignment, she was Principal of Warwood School K-8 for five years, a middle school math teacher at Wheeling Middle School where she also served as Dean of Students and a math and social studies teacher at Triadelphia and Wheeling Junior High Schools. As a teacher, she served as the Curriculum Coordinator, served on several committees which included curriculum intervention to raise test scores and the development of the character education program. She also coached volleyball. She holds a BA in Elementary Education with a minor in Math and Social Studies from West Liberty State College and Masters in Administration from West Virginia.

Steve Rhodes Steve Rhodes is a principal at Gatewood Elementary in Fayette County. He has served as an administrator in the county for 7 years. Steve has 15 years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher in Fayette County. He earned his undergraduate degree from Concord College in 1988 and his administrative degree from West Virginia Graduate College in 1992. Prior to entering the educational field Steve worked in the mining industry for Central Appalachian Coal Company and New River Coal Company. He was a member of the engineering and the mine rescue teams for both companies. During his employment in Fayette County he has been coordinator for all math field day events for the county and represents the county as a member of the Math Curriculum Team. Steve's motivation for attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders is to expand his personal knowledge of 21st Century instructional practices.

Michelle Snyder Michelle is the principal of Bethlehem and West Liberty Elementary Schools. She has served in this position for six years. Prior to this position, she was an assistant principal for two years, with 16 years of classroom experience as a mathematics/ general science teacher. Michelle received her degrees from WVU. During her tenure at Bethlehem Elementary, the school received recognition for being a WV Exemplary School 5 out of the past 6 years. West Liberty Elementary continues to be recognized each year as a Title I Distinguished School. Michelle is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders because she feels that her leadership promoting 21st Century Learning is the key to providing the staff and students with the key components to achieve success.

Nadine Sweda Nadine is the principal of Jefferson Primary in Brooke County, where she has served as principal for five years. Nadine holds degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and California University of Pennsylvania. She is a Nationally Certified speech- language pathologist and a certified elementary/ middle school principal. Prior to her assignment at Jefferson Primary, she was an itinerant speech- language pathologist in Brooke County. During her tenure at Jefferson Primary, she has implemented a PBS program, DIBELS assessment utilizing a palm pilot for data collection, professional learning communities with shared planning time for teachers on grade level, and co-teaching utilizing the Title I and learning disabilities instructors. Next school year, she will be implementing the Kansas writing program in second, third and fourth grades.

Cinthia Virtue Cindy is the Assistant Principal of A. T. Allison Elementary School in Hancock County. She has served in this position for three years. Cindy has been an elementary teacher in Hancock County. Cindy holds degrees from WVU and Salem International University in Educational Leadership. During her time at Allison Elementary School, Cindy has implemented a “Teachers and Parents as Partners” parent involvement program, worked to implement Response to Intervention, and helped to facilitate Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in the school schedule. Cindy is part of the 21st Century Classroom Assessment for Learning cadre in Hancock County and is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders to gain a better understanding and promote 21st Century instructional practices.

Barbara Ware Barbara M. Ware is assistant principal of Valley View Elementary in Berkeley County, where she has served for the past four years. Barbara holds degrees from Shepherd College and West Virginia University. Prior to becoming assistant principal, she served as the elementary coordinator at Burke Street Elementary for two years and site coordinator of the summer school program for eight years. During her twenty eight years as a teacher, Barbara taught kindergarten through third grades, plus worked as a preschool specialist with Resa VIII. She looks forward to the attending the WV Institute for the 21st Century Leaders to become more informed of the 21st Century instructional practices so she can share them with the instructional teams at school.

Marion Ward Marion Ward is the proud principal of the precious Pirates at Peyton Elementary School in Huntington, WV. She has been there for nine of her fifteen years as an administrator. Marion is a strong advocate of character education. Putting children first is more than a motto to her. In order for her children to succeed they must be equipped with 21st century skills and she wants to be able to help them help themselves in the work world of competition. Marion expects all her students to graduate from high school and become part of the working class in society. She has been a national presentor of Aha! Process presenting numerous workshops on "A Framework For Understanding Poverty." Peyton has been a Title One Distinguished School for the past 4 years.

Week 2 Middle

Elizabeth Adams Elizabeth is the principal of Hedgesville Middle School in Berkeley County. This will be her first year as a principal. Elizabeth holds degrees from West Virginia University and Shepherd College. Prior to her assignment as principal at Hedgesville Middle, she was a 7th and 8th grade Mathematics teacher and the assistant principal at Hedgesville Middle School. During her tenure at Hedgesville Middle, she has worked on developing successful co-taught classrooms, modeled differentiated instruction activities for teachers, and worked to increase the use of technology in the classroom. She is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Learners in order to expand her personal knowledge of 21st Century instructional practices and to share these practices with her colleagues.

Jason Browning I am the 31 year old Assistant Principal of Chapmanville Middle School in Logan County. This is my 3rd year in administration, all here at Chapmanville Middle. This is my 7th year in education overall. I am very proud to mention that Chapmanville Middle School made Adequate Yearly progress for the 2007-08 school year. My educational background includes earning 3 graduate degrees from Salem International University (educational leadership, physical education/ health education and General Curriculum and Instruction). I attended West Virginia State University for my undergraduate degrees and played football. I received undergraduate degrees in Health Education and Physical Education. I am married to Ms. Carrie Wellman Browning. She is a second grade teacher at Omar Elementary in Logan County. We have a beautiful boxer that is spoiled rotten and we plan to spoil the baby we are expecting in late July as well.

Cynthia Caldwell Cynthia is an assistant principal at Logan Middle School in Logan County, where she has served for two years. Cynthia attended West Virginia State College where she earned her B.A. in Biology and Science education. She later attended Marshall University and added a certification in Mathematics. In addition she currently holds masters degrees in both Elementary Education and Administrative Leadership. Prior to her assignment at Logan Middle School, Cynthia taught Science and Mathematics at Man Middle School. During her tenure at Logan Middle, she has worked to improve student mastery in Language Arts and Mathematics by implementing a learning skills class for all students scoring below mastery. She has also worked to bring Logan Middle into the 21st century by requiring electronic lesson plans emailed to administrators, all in-school communication conducted electronically, and improving the technology skills of both teachers and students in the classroom.

Tim Click Tim is the principal of Point Pleasant Primary School, he has been here since 2008.He attended Franklin D. Roosevelt Elementary School, Point Pleasant Junior High School, Point Pleasant High School 1982, Marshall University B.A. 1-6 1987, Marshall University M.A. K-8 1993, Marshall University M.A. Administration 1999. His experience is as follows1987-88 Substitute, 1988-89 Beech Hill Elementary First/ Second Grade Split, Roosevelt Elementary 1989-93 First/Second Grade Split, Mason Elementary 1993-04 Second and First Grades. His Administrative experience is Assistance Principal Wahama Junior Senior High School 2004-06, Principal Wahama Junior Senior High School 2006-08, and Point Pleasant Primary School 2008-present.

Helen Curry Helen is the principal at Williamson Middle School in Mingo County, where she has served as principal for the 2007-2008 school year. A 2003 NBCT, Helen holds degrees from Marshall University with a BA in Elementary Education, a MA in Learning Disabilities, and additional certifications in the areas of Mental Impairment, Behavior Disorders, and Autism. She also received advanced administrative training through Salem International University. Prior to her assignment at Williamson Middle, she was an assistant principal at Burch Elementary. Helen also taught special education for 18 years at Burch Junior High, Burch Middle School and Burch Elementary before teaching Alternative Education. She is working to implement Respect and Protect at WMS.

Ann Downs Ann Downs is just finishing her first year of being a principal at Capon Bridge Middle School. She served two years as assistant principal before stepping up to the principalship. Ann is a graduate of Shepherd University with her degree in English secondary education and a master’s degree from Shenandoah University. As a principal, Downs has worked facilitate the use of differentiated instruction in the regular classroom with some gender based classes. The improvement of the special education test scores has also been at the center of her work.

Jim Fletcher Jim is principal of Crum Middle School in Wayne County, where he has served as administrative leader for eight years. Jim holds bachelor and master degrees from Marshall University. His previous experience came in Mingo County where he served as principal of Tug Valley, Burch, and Williamson High School. Jim also served as principal at Williamson Middle and assistant Principal at Williamson High. He has twenty-two years of administrative experience. During his tenure at Crum Middle, Jim has been a part of bringing the school from seriously impaired his first year to a West Virginia school of excellence five years later. Jim knows that in order to prepare students for the 21st Century, he and his staff must continue their own education through continuous staff development.

Anthony Fratto Anthony has been the principal of Lumberport Middle School in Harrison County for the past four years. He holds degrees from Fairmont State College and West Virginia University and has received other training through Salem University and Marshall University. Prior to his assignment at Lumberport Middle, he taught Grades 1, 2, 4, and 6, at Hepzibah Elementary school, spent 3 years as a reading teacher at LMS and RW Junior and High School, taught reading, science and social studies at LMS. He served as assistant principal at Gore Middle School and the Harrison County Transitional Middle School immediately prior to being assigned to Lumberport. While at Lumberport he has implemented a PBS program, added time to increase math instruction for all students, introduced Kapplan Reading and Math for all students below Mastery on WESTEST, and worked to increase technology integration in all classrooms.

Jo Ellen Goodall Jo-Ellen has just completed her first as assistant principal of Wellsburg Middle School in Brooke County. She received the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from West Liberty State College, Master of Arts Degree in Gifted Education from West Virginia University, and Educational Administrative Certification from Salem International University. Prior to her assignment at WMS, Jo-Ellen was employed with the Edison Local School District in Hammondsville, Ohio where served as the district’s Gifted Coordinator and Intervention Specialist with Special Education. Jo-Ellen is also a published author of the Christian book entitled, Angels Anonymous God’s Undercover Angels. She looks forward to the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders so that she may enhance her knowledge of 21st Century instructional practices.

Joel Harris Joel is the assistant principal of Collins Middle School in Fayette County where he has served as an assistant for three years. After receiving a degree in secondary education from West Virginia University, Joel served as a middle school science teacher at Collins Middle for ten years. Joel holds a master's degree in Leadership Studies from Marshall University Graduate College and is currently pursuing a doctor of education degree from Marshall University Graduate College. Joel resides in Oak Hill with his wife, Mindy and their four children, Tanner, Carsyn, Troy and Camryn. He is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders to strengthen his knowledge of 21st Century instructional practices.

Joanne Hines Joanne is the principal of Cheat Lake Middle School in Monongalia County having just completed her third year. She previously taught gifted ed., second grade, and middle school reading/language arts and math. She was also the assistant principal at Brookhaven Elementary and the principal at Mason-Dixon Elementary; both in Monongalia County. Joanne has a BA from Fairmont State University in Education (multi-certified and gifted ed.), an MA in reading from WVU and certifications in administration, supervision, and superintendent. During her time at Cheat Lake Middle, Joanne has worked with her teachers to develop a more rigorous curriculum while also working toward a common goal for all students to be the best they can possibly be. Joanne is also a national presenter and has co-authored three books, Anticipation Guides, Teach the Way They Learn, and Teach Math the Way They Learn.

Brent Jarrell Brent is the assistant principal of Barboursville Middle School in Cabell County, where he has served in his current position for five years. Brent holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Marshall University. Prior to becoming an administrator, he was a middle school mathematics and science teacher at Barboursville Middle School for twelve years and a Title I mathematics teacher at Enslow Middle School for three years. During his twelve years as a teacher at Barboursville Middle School, he was a team leader, coach, faculty senate officer and sponsor for student government. He is attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders in order to assist his staff and students to make Barboursville Middle School a state of the art technological society.

Kim Johnson I am originally from New Jersey, but came to West Virginia for college (Alderson- Broaddus ’80) and never left. I received a MA in Special Education (Gifted) from WVU in 1985. Because I was placed on the RIF list early 1990, I applied to law school; graduating from Duquesne University School of Law in 1994. Having not been riffed, I chose to stay in education and work toward my goal of being a Special Education Director. To that end, I completed my administration certification at Salem International in 2006. My entire professional career has been in Brooke County at Follansbee Middle School as principal. It is a unique challenge to lead the people with whom I was once a colleague, yet it is a comfort to work with people I know so well. I am married with three children in out family: 25 and 23 year old boys and a 13 year old daughter.

Elizabeth Keatley Elizabeth has served as the Assistant Principal at Matewan Middle School and Matewan High School since November of 2006. Elizabeth holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Marshall University. She received administrative training from Marshall University and obtained her certification from Salem International University. Prior to her Assistant Principal assignment, Elizabeth served as a middle school language arts teacher and a high school English and French teacher. While at Matewan High School and Matewan Middle School Elizabeth has worked extensively with improving attendance and decreasing tardiness. She is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders in order to increase her personal knowledge of 21st Century instructional practices and be able to better aid her teachers in the implementation of those practices.

Marsha Maynard I graduated from Marshall University in 1991 for multi-subjects K-8.I also got Master's degree in Mild Mental Impaired from Marshall University in 1995. I have certifications in Teaching Students with Specific Learning Disabilities and Behavior Disorders. I also have a certificate from Salem International in School Administration. I have worked in Mingo County in general education and special education until year 07-08 and 08-09 I have been administrator at Matewan Middle School.

Crystal Nantz Crystal Nantz is the assistant principal of Cheat Lake Middle School in Monongalia County, having just completed her second year. She served as a special educator for the county, spending the majority of that time as an instructor for students with behavior disorders. She has a BA from Fairmont State University (multi-certified and learning disabilities), an MA from WVU in behavior disorders, and certification in administration. During her time as assistant principal, she was worked closely with the special education staff to close the AYP gap and increase collaboration. She heads up the positive behavior support committee and has helped teachers implement a program whereas student behavior has improved dramatically.

Joseph Paolo Joe has just completed his first year as an Assistant Principal at Weir Middle School in Hancock County. He returned to education in 2003 and has 10 years of teaching experience on both the high school and middle school levels. This year at Weir Middle, Joe spearheaded two Professional Learning Communities involving math and 6th Grade. The PLCs focused on vertical and horizontal prioritizing of the WVCSOs. Joe led a newly formed Safety Committee that ensured WMS compliance with county and state regulations and was also in charge of the Special Education program. In 2005 and 2006, Joe presented Best Teaching Practices to fellow educators at SREB’s national conventions. From 2004 to 2006 as part of the HSTW program, Joe served on the Leadership Teams at Oak Glen High School and Oak Glen Middle School and was a presenter at the Summer Professional Development Workshop for Hancock County Schools.

Chris Pinnick I have an Undergraduates degree from West Virginia Institute of Technology. A Bachelors of Science, Music Education and Mathematics. I graduated from Salem International University in 2003 for Master of Arts, Educational Technology and a Certification in Educational Leadership in 2005. I work at Oak High School as Band Director from 1979-1987, Stratton Junior High School as Math/ Music Teacher from 1987- 1988, Collins Middle School as Math Teacher from 1988-2000, Oak Hill High School as Music Teacher from 2000- 2005, Anstead Middle School as Principal from 2005- 2008 and Collins Middle School as Assistant Principal from 2008- present. I also work for Adjunct for , Educational Technology Foundations of Education from 2003- present.

Barry Scragg An educator for 40 years, Barry has served as an administrator at the middle school and high school level in West Virginia and other states. He holds an administrative degree in Leadership Studies from Marshall University. He is currently principal at Ceredo-Kenova Middle School, serving the community where he and his wife grew up, attended school, and are now surrounded by multiple generations of family and friends. A relatively new convert to the “Did You Know” /” The World is Flat” world of technology that’s transforming education, Barry has a real-world view of things and is fully supportive of technology integration. He has aggressively pursued acquiring technology assets for CKMS and is looking forward to exploring 21st Century Leadership.

Patrick Riddle Patrick is the principal of Wheeling Middle School in Ohio County, where he has served in this position for one year. Patrick holds degrees from West Liberty State College and West Virginia University, where he is currently working on a Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership. Prior to his current assignment, he served as an Assistant Principal at both Triadelphia Middle School and Warwood School, each for one year. He also served as a mathematics teacher, technology coordinator and Dean of Students at Wheeling Middle School. During his first year as principal at Wheeling Middle, he has worked to learn and understand the strengths and weaknesses of the school. This information was used to develop a team planning schedule for the next academic year, along with curricular initiatives with research based teaching practices and technology integration.

Liz Ward Liz Ward is the principal of Martinsburg North Middle School. She became principal in October of 2007. Before that she was the assistant principal in charge of curriculum and instruction at North. She has also been a head teacher, and middle school Language Arts teacher. She holds her undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and her Masters in Administration from Shenandoah University. During her tenure at North, Liz has worked to improve test scores. Last year, North was able to raise scores enough to make AYP in all areas except one. Her focus has been using benchmark assessments and showing teachers how to use data to drive instruction. Liz is also in the process of reculturing North, and has made multiple changes in the schedule and course offerings in the building. Liz Ward lives in Shepherdstown with her husband and nine year old daughter.

John Waugaman John is the principal of Buffalo Middle School in Wayne County, where he has served as principal for 5 years. John holds degrees from Ashland Community College and Marshall University with an MA in Leadership Studies from Marshall Graduate College. Prior to his assignment at Buffalo, he was assistant principal at Spring Valley High School for four years and St. Joseph High School for one year. John also served 7 years in the United States Army as a medical specialist/training non-commissioned officer. During his tenure at Buffalo Middle School, he has worked to improve student character, developing grade level teaming, and initiate Co- teaching across the curriculum. He wishes to attend the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders in order to expand his personal knowledge of 21st Century instructional practices.

Donita Webb Donita is the principal of Fort Gay Middle School in Wayne County, where she has served as principal for eleven years. Donita holds degrees from Marshall University and Salem International University in Mathematics and Educational Administration. During the past three years she participated in a Comprehensive School Reform Grant where differentiated instruction has been included in all grade levels. Donita has received some training in 21st Century instruction at the county level. She is interested in expanding her personal knowledge for incorporating 21st century skills at Fort Gay Middle School.

Steve White Steve is the principal at Glade Middle School in Webster County, where he has served as principal for two years. Steve holds degrees from Glenville State College and Marshall University with advanced administrative training from Marshall University. Prior to his assignment at Glade, he was a K-12 Music Teacher for 22 years. During his tenure at Glade Middle School, he has focused much attention on meeting AYP and improving school wide discipline. Glade Middle School meet AYP in 2007-’08 for the first time. He has also had the privilege of working on a pilot project of Data Analysis that will be implemented district wide and is being shared with other schools statewide.

Ann Workman Ann is assistant principal at Charles Town Middle school in Jefferson County. She has worked in Jefferson County for twenty-seven years and has been an assistant principal for seven years. She also worked in middle school guidance and alternative education in Frederick County, Virginia, for ten years. Her school projects include, implementing a school learning community focused on differentiating instruction, serving on the CAG team, completing the master schedule, and planning staff development. Next year, Ann will be assuming major responsibility for curriculum and instruction.

Week 2 High

Gordon Anderson Gordon Anderson is the Coordinator of Vocational Services of the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center in Hancock County, where he has served in this position since January 2002. Gordon earned his Bachelor of Science in Vocational-Technical Education from West Virginia Institute of Technology, Masters Educational Leadership Studies from WVU, and Superintendent Certificate from Salem International. Gordon began his career in education teaching the Automotive Technology in the JDRIV Career Center; prior to this his other career was in automotive repair. He is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century leaders so the students and staff will benefit.

Michael Baumann In 1983 I got a Bachelors degree in Industrial Arts from Berea College, KY. In 1998 I got my Masters degree in Administration from Marshall University, WV. My teaching experience is as follows: from 1984-1998 Industrial Arts/ Technology Education. From 1998-2000 I was assistant principal at Milton Middle School. From 2000-2008 I was assistant principal at Cabell Midland High School. From 2008- 2009 I am assistant principal at C.C.Career Tech. Center.

Katherine Blankenship Katherine is currently the principal at the West Virginia Industrial Home for Youth and the Lorrie Yeager Juvenile Center where she has served as principal for six years. She holds degrees from Glenville State College, West Virginia University and Marshall University. Prior to her current assignment, Katherine taught in a detention center and was the principal at the Elkins Mountain School and the West Virginia Children’s Home School. She is looking forward to expanding her knowledge of 21st Century instructional practices.

Jack Cain Mr. Jack Cain is the principal of Cameron High School. Mr. Cain is a 1979 graduate of CHS, and went on to West Virginia University for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Agricultural Education before earning his Education Administration degree. Mr. Cain has taught at Downington (Philadelphia) Industrial and Agricultural School, as well as the Pocahontas County and Tyler Consolidated High Schools before returning to teach at CHS, and moving on the Principalship.

Kobie Coburn I am a graduate of West Virginia Tech with a concentration in engineering. I worked as a staff engineer in the coal fields, and later founded 3-D Consulting, Inc., an engineering consulting firm. I began my teaching career at Southern WV Community and Technical College as a Math and Physics Instructor. I earned my Master’s in Adult and Technical Education from Marshall, and my Administration Degree from Salem International University. I taught at the college level at WV State College in addition to beginning my career in secondary education, where I taught Engineering Technology and CAD/CAM. I taught at Logan High School for two years and went to Boone Career Center in Boone County for 10 years, and 3 years ago came back home to Logan County as an administrator at Ralph R. Willis Career and Technical Center.

Julia Collins Julia Collins is the assistant principal at Tug Valley High School, where she has served as assistant principal for the past year. The previous year she was assistant principal at Lenore K-8. Julia holds degrees from Marshall University and West Virginia Graduate School with advanced administrative training from Salem International University. Prior to her assignments as assistant principal at both Lenore K-8 and Tug Valley High School, she was a special education teacher at Tug Valley High School in a self contained classroom teaching students that were moderately mentally impaired and students with autism. In addition, Julia has worked in a resource room and in the inclusion environment teaching students that were learning disabled and mildly mentally impaired. Julia worked for the WVDE for three years as a scorer, table leader, and she was part of the team that developed items for the written APTA assessment. She is interested in attending the WV Institute to expand her knowledge in integrating academics with technology.

Joe Corbin Joseph "J.D." is the principal of the West Virginia Secondary School for the Deaf and also serves as the campus Director of Career and Technical Education. He has served in that capacity for the past ten years. J.D. holds degrees from Frostburg State University, Western Maryland College and recently completed advanced administrative coursework at Salem International University. He formerly served as a teacher of the Deaf and Director of Student Living. He has been diligent, responsible and enthusiastic in his quest to develop and oversee programs to benefit the special students that he serves. He is attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders to advance his knowledge in order to become a more effective leader.

Dan Enich Dan Enich II is the Head Principal at Weir Middle School in Weirton, West Virginia. Dan holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Salem University. Dan also has a Master’s Degree in Special Education from West Virginia University. Dan’s undergraduate degree in PE and Safety Ed is from West Liberty State College where he also participated in varsity baseball for 4 years and was elected to the WLSC Athletic Hall of Fame. Prior to the Weir Middle School position, he was the assistant principal at Oak Glen High School, Weir High School, and Weir Middle School. Mr. Enich started his educational career in Hancock County in 1989 as a Driver Ed, Special Ed, Work-Based Learning, and Physical Education teacher. Mr. Enich’s interest in attending the 21st Century Institute is to broaden his outlook on the scope of education in the state of West Virginia.

Lance Fox Lance is the Assistant Principal at Berkeley Springs High School. He was a social studies teacher at the school for 5 years before he became an administrator in 2004. Mr. Fox received his Masters in Education Administration from Shenandoah University in 2004. He graduated from Shepherd College with a B.A. degree in Secondary Education in 1995. Lance presently is in charge of Special Education and testing. He also was an athletic director and discipline and attendance administrator during the last four years.

Daniel Gardener Dan is the principal of two schools within the WVDE Institutional Education Programs, the Burlington Center in Mineral County and the J. M. “Chick” Buckbee Center in Hampshire County for 2.5 years. Dan earned his Associate’s degree in Secondary Education from Potomac State College and his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education with a Mathematics Specialization from West Virginia University. He holds two Master’s degrees from Frostburg State University in K-12 Guidance and Counseling and K-12 Administration and Supervision. Prior to his work with OIEP, he served as principal for 4 years at the Mineral County Alternative School; 17 years at Union High School and two years as a mathematics teacher at Wirt County High School. He helped write the 5-Year Project MERIT grant from the National Science Foundation. Dan has also presented many local, regional and state mathematics trainings including the WVCPD’s Governor’s Summer Workshops for Teachers.

Melissa Komorowski Melissa is an Assistant Principal at Brooke High School (BHS) in Brooke County. She has just completed her first year in administration. Melissa holds BS in Elementary Education, a Master of Arts in Special Education, and certification in administration. All of her degrees were earned at West Virginia University. She also currently adjuncts education/ psychology courses at a local community college. Prior to BHS, Melissa was a special education teacher and an assistant professor of education (Bethany College). Melissa has been involved with Positive Behavior Support Programs since 2001 and has presented at several trainings over the years. She researches current issues and trends and is interested in attending the WV Institute for 21st Century Leaders in order to expand and enhance her knowledge and skills for the 21st Century.

Craig Lee Loy Lee is the principal of Valley High School in Fayette County, where he has served as principal for one year. Lee holds a degree in Art Education Pre-K-Adult from Glennville State College and a Masters degree in Administration from the University Of Phoenix. Prior to his assignment at Valley High, he was an assistant principal and building facilitator at Valley High School since 2002. Lee was also the Art instructor at Valley High School for 13 years. Lee began his teaching career as a special education instructor in 1985 at Powellton Elementary School and then transferred to Beards Fork and Page Elementary Schools as an Art instructor. In 1987 he worked as the Art instructor at Montgomery Middle School. During his time at Valley High School, he has worked to improve team planning, implemented a school-wide reconfiguration process and modified the schedule to expand time for students below mastery in reading/language arts and mathematics.

Corey Murphy Corey is the Assistant Principal at John Marshall High School in Marshall County, where he has served for the past year. Corey has earned a bachelor & Master degrees from West Virginia University and an administrative certificate from Salem University. Prior to his administrative role at John Marshall High School, he was the assistant principal, athletic director, social studies teacher, and boy’s basketball coach at Central Catholic High School in Wheeling, for four years. During this past year he has implemented school-wide Positive Behavior Support and with the support of many has attempted to change the school climate at JMHS. Great success has been experienced with this program. He looks forward to the challenges of the WV institute for21st Century Leadership.

David Null I was born in Wadsworth, Ohio on November 20, 1970. I attended Hemminger Elementary, Barber Elementary, Goodyear Middle and Akron East High School in Akron, Ohio. I transferred to Ravenswood High School in November 1985, and graduated form there in 1989. I received my Bachelor’s degree from Concord College, and began teaching in Virginia. After spending five years teaching math at James Solomon Russell Junior High, I completed my Masters Degree at Virginia State University and began my administrative career in Mount Hope, West Virginia. There, I spent one year as Assistant Principal (2000- 2001) and became principal the following year. In October 2008, I transferred to my present position as principal of Fayetteville High School. That sums up my career. The important things in life to me are my Salvation at age 10, my wife- Sheri, and my children Nicholas, Nathan, Julia, and Kateyln.

Cassandra Porter Cassandra serves as an assistant principal at Weir High School in Hancock County. Prior to working at Weir High, Cassandra earned valuable experience at the high school, middle school, and elementary school levels at Wheeling Park High School, Bridge Street Middle School, and Bethlehem Elementary. After earning her undergraduate degree in science from Fairmont State College, Cassandra taught science at Wheeling Park for 10 years. During her tenure at WPHS, she served as Faculty Senate vice president. During her three years at Bridge Street Middle School/ Bethlehem Elementary she taught yearbook/ newspaper/ broadcasting and 21st Century Technology and founded a reading club for at-risk students. She also served as president of LSIC. Through West Virginia University; Cassandra obtained her master's degree in Educational Leadership Studies. She also has endorsements for Supervision and Superintendence. During her time at Weir High School she has worked extensively with freshman transition, Highs Schools That Work Enhance Model, SAT teams, Youth Leadership Weirton, and At Risk students.

Mark Rapp Mark is the assistant principal in charge of scheduling and curriculum at Huntington High School in Cabell County. He has served as an assistant principal for three years at HHS and as the principal of the County’s alternative school for one year. Mark holds and undergraduate degree in elementary education, a master degree in behavior disorders and a certification in leadership studies from Marshall Graduate School. During his teaching tenure, Mark taught at a juvenile detention center, coordinated a JTPA Dropout/Re- entry program and taught at Beverly Hills Middle School in reading and alternative education. His interest is acquiring as much information regarding cultural challenges and preparing him for technologically for the 21st century.

Samuel Snyder Sam Snyder is the principal of Hundred High School in Wetzel County where he has served for five years. He majored in Social Studies at Fairmont State College and received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1978. At West Virginia University he majored in Counseling and Education Administration and received his Masters Degree in 1983. Prior to his assignment at Hundred High School he was the principal at Fairview Middle School in Marion County, assistant principal at Short Line School, and a teacher, counselor and coach at Hundred High School, North Marion High School, and Mannington High School. Hundred High School has made adequate yearly progress every year under his tenure. Also, in January 2008, Hundred High School was recognized as the 4th best High School in the State of West Virginia by WV Reports. Sam enjoys playing golf, traveling, and fishing. He resides with his wife Jennifer, who is also a teacher, in Katy, WV.
