As most of the sport competitions across the globe in the previous season, the DELO EHF Champions League did not finish as we all hoped due to the Covid-19 outbreak. However, the EHF and EHF Marketing invested time during the break to prepare for the forthcoming season with the aim of developing the competition as the benchmark event in the indoor sports market. The 28th season of the European top-flight in 2020/21 will open a new chapter, when the new partnership with Infront and DAZN comes into effect and, from the fans’ point of view, there are two major developments: The DELO EHF Champions League will be played in a new system with just 16 elite teams in two groups of eight, starting directly at the group phase played in a round-robin league format. There will be no qualification rounds or tournaments before. The top four teams in each group will then qualify directly for the quarter-finals with teams finishing in seventh and eighth place eliminated. The four remaining teams from each group (3rd-6th) will qualify for a play-off round, before progressing to the quarter-finals and then the EHF FINAL4. In addition, from the start of this season, fans will have an ‘appointment to view’ each week, and with no overlap of men’s and women’s top competitions. DELO EHF Champions League will be played on Saturday (at 16:00 and 18:00 CEST/CET) and Sunday (at 14:00 and 16:00 CEST/CET), with Wednesdays and Thursdays set aside for the EHF Champions League Men. After a long break, all 16 teams will be eager to be back playing at the highest level of European handball with the beginning of an exciting journey with a brand-new winners’ trophy as the prize at the competition’s conclusion. The line-up in both groups speak volumes about the quality of all squads and, even though there might be some favourites and underdogs on the paper, this competition’s history has already proven many times that surprising results can be expected on a daily basis. Even in this difficult time with necessary restrictions on the events, we, together with clubs and our partners, will make sure that the DELO Women’s EHF Champions League will be seen, followed, heard and talked about as much as in the past years – if not even more. Ein besonderes Willkommen gilt den Delegierten der Europäischen Handball Föderation, unserem heutigen Schiedsrichtergespann, so wie unseren Gästen aus Moskau. Mit dem hart erkämpften Sieg in Kroatien gegen Podravka Vegeta konnten wir ein kleines Stück Handball Vereins Geschichte schreiben und den ersten Champions League Sieg der BVB Handball Damen überhaupt mit nach Dortmund bringen. An diesen Erfolg gilt es nun für uns anzuknüpfen, allerdings konnten unsere Gäste um Chef- trainer Jan Lesli Lund in der bisherigen Gruppenphase bereits 5:1 Punkte auf der Habenseite verbuchen und direkt im ersten Spiel gegen den Gruppenfavoriten und aktuellen Champion GYÖRI AUDI ETO KC einen Punkt erspielen. Das zeigt uns wir haben ein internationales Top Team zu Gast in Dortmund. Competing in the quarter-finals gives the eight teams a massive opportunity to make it through to the promised land of the DELO EHF FINAL4 in Budapest and the chance to be crowned champions. If the play-offs were anything to go by then we are in for a treat in our four quarter-final ties that feature some of the biggest names in women’s handball. CSM Bucuresti earned their place thanks to a thrilling two-legged victory over their old Romanian rivals SCM Ramnicu Valcea. Having recorded a healthy win in the first leg, Bucuresti just did enough to prevent a comeback from Valcea, eventually getting the job done by three goals.
