  • The First Critical Assessments of a Streetcar Named Desire: the Streetcar Tryouts and the Reviewers
FALL 1991 45 The First Critical Assessments of A Streetcar Named Desire: The Streetcar Tryouts and the Reviewers Philip C. Kolin The first review of A Streetcar Named Desire in a New York City paper was not of the Broadway premiere of Williams's play on December 3, 1947, but of the world premiere in New Haven on October 30, 1947. Writing in Variety for November 5, 1947, Bone found Streetcar "a mixture of seduction, sordid revelations and incidental perversion which will be revolting to certain playgoers but devoured with avidity by others. Latter category will predomin ate." Continuing his predictions, he asserted that Streetcar was "important theatre" and that it would be one "trolley that should ring up plenty of fares on Broadway" ("Plays Out of Town"). Like Bone, almost everyone else interested in the history of Streetcar has looked forward to the play's reception on Broadway. Yet one of the most important chapters in Streetcar's stage history has been neglected, that is, the play's tryouts before that momentous Broadway debut. Oddly enough, bibliographies of Williams fail to include many of the Streetcar tryout reviews and surveys of the critical reception of the play commence with the pronouncements found in the New York Theatre Critics' Reviews for the week of December 3, 1947. Such neglect is unfortunate. Streetcar was performed more than a full month and in three different cities before it ever arrived on Broadway. Not only was the play new, so was its producer. Making her debut as a producer with Streetcar, Irene Selznick was one of the powerhouses behind the play.

HESISfc tc o:> COL g REEL WARS: COLD WAR, CIVIL RIGHTS AND HOLLYWOOD'S CHANGING INTERPRETATION OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR 1945-75 J. Roy Collins A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Greenwich for the degree of Master of Philosophy March 2006 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my supervisors, Andrew Dawson, for his patient encouragement and for gently keeping me focused, and Michael Zell, for his very pertinent comments, also the library staff at Greenwich who have always been most helpful. My thanks, too, to my son Dan and my friends May Clarke and Jim Murray for struggling through a rather large first draft and Alan Rose for his help in obtaining many of the films on video. Also, my sister Tessa, for her proof reading, and Jacob Veale for his computer expertise. Finally, my partner Sarah for her continual encouragement and support and my daughters Hannah and Esther, who accepted that 'Dad was doing his thing.' in ABSTRACT This study is an examination of America's evolving sense of racial and national identity in the period from 1945 to the mid 1970s as refracted through Hollywood's representation of the American Civil War - a powerful event in American memory which still resonates today. Civil War films have been the subject of study by film studies specialists and historians but they have concentrated on the early years highlighting the iconic films The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Gone with the Wind (1939).

  • Teaching Acting Technique and Building a Character Through Cinema
Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 1995 Volume II: Film and Literature Teaching Acting Technique and Building a Character Through Cinema Curriculum Unit 95.02.09 by Carol Penney I. INTRODUCTION This curriculum unit will be directed toward second and third year acting students at The Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School. Two prerequisites for this course are: (1) possession of basic acting skills and experience, and (2) strong commitment both to the individual study of acting and to the concept of theatre as a collaborative art form. Prior formal classwork will have included Shakespeare, Anton Chekhov, Edward Albee, and August Wilson. My students will have a strong background in improvisation, story-telling, and play and character analysis. My main focus will be an emphasis on acting technique and building a character based on what has come to be known as the Stanislavski system. The acting style of most American actors is based on this system (known as American Method Acting). Students of acting need a thorough knowledge of this style of acting since they see it every day on American television and in American movies. The students especially enjoy acting scenes from films. Just this spring, they produced a student-acted, student-directed production that included scenes from COMING TO AMERICA, FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, and THE BREAKFAST CLUB. I plan to teach acting technique and building a character through the practical application of some of the tenets of American Method Acting. This course of study will revolve around the films of Marlon Brando, who is considered to be the quintessential American movie actor.
