Vice Chair, Herman Gray, M.D., In 2009, The Youth Connection experienced a year of Children’s change. We changed our programming to better serve youth. We changed our operations to be more efficient and Secretary, Trisha Johnston, effective. And we changed our address. Twice. HP Throughout our year of change, however, our focus on serving the best interests of Treasurer, Paul VanTiem, youth in metropolitan never wavered. Our Youth Connection Career Academies St. John Health System program was a resounding success, with close to 300 youth receiving summer intern- ships. We held our Annual After-School Fair to encourage young people to participate N. Charles Anderson, in after-school programs and follow their passions in life. Detroit Urban League One constant endured throughout the year – our volunteers. When we sent out a call for Betty Brooks people to help renovate our new office space, our volunteers responded. Over 120 peo- Community Advocate ple dedicated over 2,200 hours to making our new headquarters a beautiful, functional space to allow us to serve our youth. When we needed help to put on our After-School Vernice Davis-Anthony, Fair, 100 plus people answered the call and got to work to make the Fair a success. Our Greater Detroit Area Health Council volunteers gave us the support we needed to get our work accomplished.

Grenaé Dudley, Ph.D., Whether you volunteered for one hour or one hundred hours, I would like to thank you The Youth Connection for your dedication to The Youth Connection and our children.

Chief Warren Evans, Sincerely, Detroit Police Department

Marshall We would like to give a special thanks to our sponsors who make Mathers events like this possible with their generous contributions. Foundation The Youth Connection Office Renovation

In addition to the many hours spent training and nurturing the youth in our programs, TYC undertook a major challenge upon moving to the State Fairgrounds in January. We moved our headquarters to the former Volunteer Headquarters for the Michigan State Fair - a building badly in need of massive renovation to be suitable as offices. With the help of many volunteers and countless hours working into the night, we transformed the building into a wonderful base of operations on a shoestring budget. The Youth Connection would like to thank all of our volunteers for their help on this project. Without you, none of this would have been possible. Before After After

In January, The Youth Connection moved its headquarters from our office space at 333 W. Fort Street to a building on the Michigan State Fairgrounds. In addition to the cost savings of the move, this was also an opportunity to utilize the Fair Grounds to expand our programming and to give our youth additional space for trainings, workshops and other events that would be beneficial to our youth.

When we arrived at our new office space, the entire building was in need of major repair and renovation and with little donor appetite to fund capital improvements. To that end, we went to work contacting businesses, funders, friends, families and others to help us make our new space usable as our headquarters.

Much to our delight, we had an overwhelming response from strangers and friends, businesses we work with on a regular basis and those that we didn’t know but who wanted to help our kids succeed. 122 people helped transform our headquarters into a great space!

The Youth Connection would like to thank the following individuals who helped in the renovation of our office space at the State Fairgrounds. Your contribution to our agency was a huge lift to us - we couldn’t have done it without the help of each and every one of you! Thank you to all of our outstanding volunteers! The Youth Connection would also like to thank the following businesses who supported our efforts to create a new headquarters:

Leumas Group, LLC ADT Home Security Systems Faith Management, Inc. City Year Detroit Thornton & Grooms, Inc. A. Philip Randolph Career and Technical Center The Home Depot Northridge Church Usher Team Ryan Building Materials, Inc. Northridge Church Small Group Murray Lighting & Electrical Supply Company, Inc. Smith Lumber & Hardware Co. The Youth Connection Staff Essian Painting Company Weight Watchers 2009 Volunteers of the Year Fredrick Donaldson and Lamar Cross

The Youth Connection would like to salute two volunteers who spent countless hours, days and weeks renovating our headquarters to on the State Fairgrounds. Without their effort and deter- mination, our relocation and renovation would have been extremely difficult.

Fredrick Donaldson volunteered over 300 hours to renovate our new offices. It is because of his hard work and dedication that we were able construct new counter tops for the kitchen, build the bathroom vanity and cabinetry and fix a massive leak in our pipes underneath the building. Freddie worked tirelessly to transform the old State Fairgrounds volunteer office into suitable workspace for our youth programming complete with high-speed internet, brand new electrical wiring and individual office and meeting space.

Lamar Cross volunteered over 525 hours over the span of 14 weeks and assisted Freddie and The Youth Connection staff with everything from wall construction and drywall, priming to painting as well as putting on the finishing touches to virtually every area in the building. Lamar was a tireless worker whose help was invaluable in getting our renovation completed in time for staff to work with our 200+ youth during their summer internships. The Youth Connection Career Academies

The Youth Connection Career Academies (TYCCA) has enjoyed fantastic success from its participants in the WIA Year-Round Youth program. Our program featured 11 career development workshops, college tours, community service, opportunities for students to engage in twice-weekly structured, academic and career prep sessions. Our case managers also assisted our youth throughout the year to follow their dreams and become interested, motivated young adults. Our summer internships added to the value of our program, with internship possibilities offered by companies and organiza- tions that include Health Systems, the , Gentz Industries (an aerospace technology firm), the Detroit Fire, Police, Homeland Security and Emergen- cy Management, and Water Departments, and 14 other partner organizations.

TYCCA expected 23 students to graduate from high school this past year. 19 achieved this goal in June (an 83% graduation rate) with the remaining four students expected to graduate in August. This success occurred in a public school district averaging any- where between 60% (self-reported DPS rate) and 25% graduation rates depending on the source of the data. Of those 19 graduates, 17 are moving on to secondary education or heading directly into a career. Over 89% of our total graduates are going to college or into a career this fall!

“The Youth Connection Career Academies has been an excellent program to be a part of. When I started, I wasn’t doing too well in school and I was messing around. But this program helped me to find out what I want to do with my life and got me a volun- teer placement and paid summer internship at . Ms. Gulley, Ms. Hill and Dr. Dudley have all helped me to be a better student and person. I think this program is great…if you’re interested in getting a job experience,I would recommend The Youth Connection.” - Lauren Sowell, Class of 2010 - Recognized as a TYCCA Outstanding Performer, Attending Schoolcraft College, Fall of 2010 Youth Nutrition

2009 was a fantastic year for The Youth Connection’s Child Adult Care Food Program and Summer Food Service Program outreach efforts. We partnered with the Detroit Health and Wellness Promotion Department and the United Way for Southeastern Michigan to increase the number of free meals served to youth and provide training for after-school program providers to access the meals. In November we hosted a training for over 100 after-school program leaders that resulted in close to 15,000 meals served for youth in those programs over the course of the school year and summer. As part of next year’s efforts, further trainings and communication/marketing outreach should result in another increase and more kids being fed a nutritious, healthy meal. TYC Data and Information System

With special thanks to Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick, The Youth Con- nection received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to redesign and improve our TYC Data and Information System. Work began in 2009 to increase the number of agencies and participants utilizing the system that tracks after-school pro- gram participation and coordinates that information with data from our partner, Detroit Public Schools, to show the positive effects of after-school programs for our students.

As a data-driven organization focusing on measurable outcomes, The Youth Connec- tion is excited about the possibilities this system will hold for us in 2010! 2009 Financial Statement The Youth Connection (A Michigan Non-Profit Corporation)
