This study examines the structural development of the central Kakamas Domain of the eastern Namaqua Metamorphic Province, which has not been extensively studied previously. The compressional orogenic phase is associated with D1 and D2 deformation events during which northeast–southwest- Citation: Tsakou Sonwa, C.S.; van directed shortening resulted in southwest-directed thrusting illustrated by an intra-domain thrust Bever Donker, J.; Bailie, R. • Refurbishment and Upgrading of the Vaal Gamagara Water Supply Scheme
Refurbishment and Upgrading of the Vaal Gamagara Water Supply Scheme “Sustaining the source and flow of life forever” BACKGROUND The construction of the Vaal Gamagara Water Supply Scheme in the Northern Cape Province was initially completed in 1976. The purpose of the scheme is to supply water from the Vaal River to the arid areas of the Gamagara valley near Postmasburg, and north thereof to the diamond mines at Lime Acres and the iron ore and manganese mines at Beeshoek, Sishen, Mamatwan, Hotazel and Black Rock. Several local authorities (of which Delportshoop, Postmasburg, OIifantshoek, Kathu and Hotazel are the largest) also receive bulk water supply from the scheme. A later addition to the scheme is the Kalahari East Water User Association, which was completed in 1992 to supply domestic and stock water to an area of approximately 1 412 000ha that includes more than 250 farms. The Vaal Gamagara Scheme consists of: • Vaal Gamagara Water Treatment Works near Delportshoop (capacity of 13.27 million m³/annum) • several pump stations • 11 reservoirs • a pipeline of 370km that delivers water to users The pipeline has the capacity to convey and import a maximum of 19 million m³/annum into the area. Water from the Vaal Riv- er (13.27 million m³/annum) is augmented by dewatering facilities at the Kolomela, Beeshoek and Sishen mines. (Dewatering activities are aimed at lowering the ground water table to ensure safe mining conditions.) The scheme was transferred by the Department of Water and Sanitation to Sedibeng Water in 2007. Approximately 22 million m3 of water is currently supplied per annum to domestic consumers, as well as the mining, industrial and agricultural sectors in the area.

  • The Distribution of Malaria in South Africa and a Mosquito Survey Of
344 THE DISTRIBUTION OP MALARIA IN SOUTH AFRICA AND A MOSQUITO SURVEY OF MILITARY HOS- PITAL AREAS. BY MAJOE J. PRATT-JOHNSON, M.C., D.A.D.M.S. (PATHOLOGY), S.A.M.C. THE following information in regard to the distribution of malaria in South Africa has been compiled chiefly from the reports of Government Medical Officers and Health Officials who were circularised by courtesy of the Union Public Health Department in March, 1918, in regard to the following points: (1) The areas affected in each district. (2) The type or types of malaria existing. (3) The incidence of the disease, whether endemic or epidemic; and (4) The types of anopheline mosquitoes identified. The information available from these sources indicates the necessity for a considerable amount of further work to provide a more complete and accurate knowledge of the incidence of malaria in South Africa. I. CAPE PROVINCE. Malaria is practically unknown in the Cape Province. A severe epidemic of malaria occurred in the Northern districts of the Cape Colony, especially along the course of the Orange River in the districts of Gordonia and Kenhardt during 1909, following a period of unusually heavy rainfall. At the same time the disease was reported to be prevalent in Namaqualand and even in the Kalahari, and to a less extent the districts of Vryburg, Mafeking, Taungs, Hay and Barkly West. This constitutes the only serious recognised epidemic of malaria which has been reported in the Cape Province, cases of Malaria in this Province usually being recorded as being imported from other districts.
