The campus expanded through the erection of the VanRennssalaer dorm in ’31, the Drexel Lodge, and the use of the athletic field at 46th and Haverford. In ’27 Drexel began its first graduate degree programs in secretarial science, commerce, home economics, library sci ence, civil, electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering. The programs received accreditation from the major national bodies.

Parke R. Kolbe (1932-42) outlined his goals for Drexel in a report in ’32. He would transform the Institute of Art, Science and Industry into an Institute of Technology. While Drexel would continue as a professional school, there would be a strengthening in the pure sciences and the secretarial school. Drexel planned to offer degrees in physics and chemistry and develop the biology curriculum. The economics, sociology, political science and history departments were to be strengthened and the Secretarial School became the Business School. Drexel, then as now, had a pressing need for space, and Kolbe felt construction of a library building and gym building would go a long way to solving these problems. Neither would be built for some time because of the advent of World War II. Research was the best way to publicize Drexel, and Kolbe institut ed visiting professorships, exchange fellowships, graduate assis- tantships and lectureships.

George Peters Rea (1942-44) took the helm James MacAlister (1892-1913), first president of the Drexel A n sw e rs: Disque Hall was named for an of the Institute when the war was threatening to Institute of Art, Science and Industry, was also head of the first cen interim president not mentioned. Harold Myers (1987-1988) came to the University when it was in the midst of one of its most turbulent periods. The Board of Trustees pulled Myers out of retirement to be president after Gaither’s not-wholly-unexpected resignation. Myers was a natural for the position, as his entire life was involved with the school. He graduated from Drexel in ’38 and became an instructor in cooperative education and later director of graduate placement. He took a sabbatical from the University to enter the Navy on active duty in World War II and the Korean War. Between the wars he was assistant dean of men and director of the student building. After Korea he returned to Drexel as dean of men, treasurer, vice presi dent and treasurer, and finally vice president for university relations. He was awarded the Doctor of Science Degree, Honoris Causa, in 1983. Although Myers did not have the time to expand the campus or institute new degree programs while he was in office, he was entrusted with the difficult task of quickly finding Hagert a new leader for the University. Breslin William Walsh Hagerty (1963-83) presided over the change from “Institute” to “University,” and watched Drexel change as much as his predecessor had.
