The Cracknell Cup Rugby 7s Tournament Sunday 5 February 2017 www.shiplake.org.uk Welcome to Shiplake It is a great honour to welcome you all to Shiplake College, for our fourth invitational 7s tournament. Shiplake College offers fantastic opportunities for sport, all set in a beautiful 45-acre site on the banks of the River Thames. Our award-winning grounds-staff prepare fantastic pitches for pupils to use, which I hope are not hampered too much by the weather for today’s tournament. The philosophy of sport here is not only the pursuit of excellence and professionalism for the elite, but also to raise achievement across the entire ability range within a supportive environment which helps all students to realise their potential. I wish to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all the visiting teams, supporters and parents from all schools in attendance, and I wish you every success for today and the rest of the season. Mr Sam Beckett Head of Rugby XV Rugby Website Preview As the curtain raiser to the 7s season, the Shiplake tournament always captures the attention of rugby blogs and websites. This year was no different, with the following preview published on www.fifteenrugby.com: ‘Taking place on Sunday 5 February the tournament brings together some of the top teams from around the country this year, certainly judging by 15-a-side form. Sixteen teams will compete for the Cracknell Cup, won last year by the outstanding Bedford side. The format sees the sides split into four groups of four, with the winners going into the Cup semi finals. The winners play in the final for the Cracknell Cup, while the losers meet in the Plate final. Second placed sides go through to the Shield semi finals, the winners meet in the Shield final, losers in the Bowl final. Third placed sides meet in the Trophy semi finals, with the winners playing in the Trophy final. Fourth placed sides in the group meanwhile meet in the Vase semi finals, with the winners meeting in the Vase final. Bedford are drawn in Group B, where they will face the hosts, Shiplake College, as well as Caterham, and St Paul’s, whom Bedford needed a last play try in order to beat in the 15s season, which ought to make for a spicy encounter in Group B. The Plate was last year picked up by Seaford College, and they are drawn in a tricky Group A alongside a very strong St John’s Leatherhead side, a New Hall side packed with Saracens Academy talent, and a Hurstpierpoint College side who are on the up. Group C contains three of last year’s silverware winners, Abingdon picked up the shield, with Cheltenham College collecting the Bowl, and Oakham winning the Vase. Just having those three in a group makes for an exciting looking series of games given their exploits in the long format of the game last term, but throw in the NatWest Champions Trophy winners, Tonbridge, and you have a group that looks perilously tough and deliciously exciting for spectators. Group D contains the last of the 2016 trophy winners, Worth, who were winners of the Trophy. They are joined by Radley College, a strong looking Eastbourne College, and a Haileybury side who enjoyed a truly excellent fifteen-a-side season.’ Today’s Charity We are raising money today for the Matt Hampson Foundation. This charity provides invaluable advice, support and/or treatment for anyone who has suffered a serious injury or disability which has arisen from participation in sport. Matt Hampson was spinally injured in 2005 during an England U21 rugby training session. Since then, Matt has battled hard to live as normal a life as possible. Paralysed from the neck down and breathing via the aid of a ventilator, it is testament to him that he decided to set up the Foundation so that others who have suffered similar catastrophic injuries through sport can receive support and assistance. As well as his charity duties, Matt delivers inspirational talks to young people and businesses around the country. He is a forwards coach at Oakham School and Oakham Rugby Club, and an ambassador for both the RFU’s Injured Players Fund. If anyone epitomises the Foundation’s ethos of ‘Get Busy Living’, it is Matt Hampson. The Foundation helps hundreds of people every year. This is achieved in a number of ways, including direct grants, mentoring and friendship. Beneficiaries have suffered a variety of serious sporting injuries, but thanks to the Foundation’s support are able to enjoy an improved quality of life and well-being. To help raise awareness of this very worthy cause, the Shiplake 1st XV have displayed the Matt Hampson Foundation logo on their playing shirts and shorts. We are delighted to be able to use this opportunity to provide additional support, and thank you for your generous donations today. Chris Cracknell Chris Cracknell left Shiplake in 2002 and went on to represent Harlequins, Cornish Pirates (EDF Trophy Winner), Newbury, Bath (Heineken Cup) and Worcester in club level rugby.
