Poland in particular is beautiful this time of year, especially where we visited on this tour; the extensive Biebrza Marshes, and some of the last remaining old-growth forest left in Europe, the primeval forests of Bialowieski National Park, on the border with Belarus. Our tour this year was highly successfully, recording 168 species of birds along with 11 species of mammals. This includes all 10 possible Woodpecker species, many of which we found at their nest holes, using the best local knowledge possible. Local knowledge also got us on track with a nesting Boreal (Tengmalm’s) Owl, while a bit of effort yielded the tricky Eurasian Pygmy-Owl and the trickier Hazel Grouse. We also found 11 species of raptors on this tour, and we even timed it to the day that the technicolored European Bee-eaters arrived back to their breeding grounds. A magical evening was spent watching the display of the rare Great Snipe in the setting sun, with Common Snipe “winnowing” all around and the sounds of breeding Common Redshank and Black-tailed Godwits. -

This paper presents an appraisal of research findings on the population dynamics, reproduction and survival of those Holarctic Owl species that feed on cyclically-fluctuating rodents or lagomorphs. In many regions, voles and lemmings fluctuate on an approximate 3–5 year cycle, but peaks occur in different years in different regions, whereas Snowshoe Hares Lepus americanus fluctuate on an approximate 10-year cycle, but peaks tend to be synchronised across the whole of boreal North America. Owls show two main responses to fluctuations in their prey supply. Resident species stay on their territories continuously, but turn to alternative prey when rodents (or lagomorphs) are scarce. They survive and breed less well in low than high rodent (or lagomorph) years. This produces a lag in response, so that years of high owl densities follow years of high prey densities (examples: Barn Owl Tyto alba, Tawny Owl Strix aluco, Ural Owl S. uralensis). In contrast, preyspecific nomadic species can breed in different areas in different years, wherever prey are plentiful. They thus respond more or less immediately by movement to change in prey-supply, so that their local densities can match the local food-supply at the time, with minimum lag (examples: Short-eared Owl: Asio flammeus, Long-eared Owl A. -

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Questions and Answers: Delisting the Cactus Ferruginous Pygmy Owl in Arizona Q: What is the cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl? A: The cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl is a small, reddish-brown bird with a cream-colored belly streaked with reddish-brown, and a long tail. Pygmy-owls average 2.2 ounces and are approximately 6.75 inches long. The eyes are yellow, the crown is lightly streaked, and there are no ear tufts. Paired black spots on the back of the head may resemble eyes. Their diet includes lizards, birds, insects, and small mammals. Q: What does ‘delisting’ mean? A: Delisting is the process the government undertakes to remove (delist) a species from the Federal list of threatened and endangered species. When a species is protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), it is added to the list of threatened or endangered species. Hence removing the species is termed ‘delisting.’ Q: Where is the cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl “taxon” found? A: The cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl is one of four subspecies of the ferruginous pygmy-owl. The cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl subspecies occurs from lowland central Arizona south through western Mexico to the States of Colima and Michoacan, and from southern Texas south through the Mexican States of Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon. The entire subspecies constitutes a “taxon.” Only the Arizona population of the taxon was listed as endangered. Q: Where are cactus ferruginous pygmy-owls found in Arizona? It assesses the state of knowledge related to the conservation status of the cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl in Arizona. The population decline of this owl has been attributed to the loss of riparian areas before and after the turn of the 20th century. Currently, the cactus ferruginous pygmy-owl is chiefly found in southern Arizona in xeroriparian vegetation and well- structured upland desertscrub. The primary threat to the remaining pygmy-owl population appears to be continued habitat loss due to residential development. Important information gaps exist and prevent a full understanding of the current population status of the owl and its conservation needs. Tetmajera 38, 05-080 Izabelin, Poland E-mail address: [email protected] ABSTRACT The occurrence of the pygmy owl Glaucidium passerinum and Tengmalm's owl Aegolius funereus in Kampinos Forest has not so far been described in literature. The Kampinos Forest and at the same time Kampinos National Park is situated apart from typical ranges of both these species in Poland. The area also lacks the Norway spruce Picea abies, which according to many authors is an important factor for both owl species to occur. Nevertheless, for several years now both of them have been reported from Kampinos Forest and their abundance has been growing. In 2009-2018 five Tengmalm’s owl’s territories where found, while in 2016-2018 six pygmy owl’s territories were reported. This paper analysis the distribution and habitat preferences of these owls in Kampinoska Forest both in terms of types of forest stands and the threat from the tawny owl Strix aluco and northern goshawk Accipiter gentilis. Tengmalms’ owl’s habitats were rather homogenous and they were always pine coniferous forests of various types, over 140 years old on average and with poor understorey. Pygmy owl chose forest parts rich in species, with a high share of deciduous trees and bushes, of varied age structure, with the dominant pine trees over 110 years old on average. -

Distribution and Habitat Associations of the Northern Pygmy-Owl in Oregon

Title: Distribution and Habitat Associations of the Northern Pygmy-owl in Oregon. Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: Eric D. Forsman I conducted acoustic lure surveys of northern pygmy-owls (Glaucidium gnoma)on transects that were systematically placed in forested areas throughout the state of Oregon. My objectives were to determine if pygmy-owlswere associated with particular forest types, ecoregions, or with large-diameter dominant overstory trees. I also examined temporal variation in response rates. All analyses accounted for decreases incounts of owls with increasing day of the surveyseason (P = 0.01) and with increasing time after sunrise (P = 0.06).Counts were highest in Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine and mixed conifer-hardwood forests, intermediate in mixed conifer, deciduousand high elevation forests, and lowest in western juniper (P= 0.0003). Even after accounting for forest type, numbers of owls detected variedamong ecoregions (P = 0.002). Counts of owls increased with the average diameter ranking ofdominant overstory trees (P = 0.000 1). Also, diameters of dominant treeswere greater at survey points where owls were detected than at survey points whereno owls were detected P = 0.008), and greater in the actual stands from which owls responded than around thesurvey points from which owls were detected (P = 0.0001). My data suggest that widespread decreases in large-diameter trees, or the late-successional forests in which such trees are most abundant, may reduce numbers of northern pygmy-owls. However, this finding needs to be viewed in the context that my surveys also show that the pygmy-owl is a well-distributed and fairly common forest bird in Oregon and is not limited to late-successional forest.
