Buddhism in America The Columbia Contemporary American Religion Series Columbia Contemporary American Religion Series The United States is the birthplace of religious pluralism, and the spiritual landscape of contemporary America is as varied and complex as that of any country in the world. The books in this new series, written by leading scholars for students and general readers alike, fall into two categories: some of these well-crafted, thought-provoking portraits of the country’s major religious groups describe and explain particular religious practices and rituals, beliefs, and major challenges facing a given community today. Others explore current themes and topics in American religion that cut across denominational lines. The texts are supplemented with care- fully selected photographs and artwork, annotated bibliographies, con- cise profiles of important individuals, and chronologies of major events. — Roman Catholicism in America Islam in America . • Women in Pre- and Post-Victorian India: the Use of Historical Research in the Writing of Fiction
Radhika Praveen/05039123 Vol 1 of 2 Creative Writing PhD Vol 2 Women in pre- and post-Victorian India: The use of historical research in the writing of fiction by Radhika Praveen This practice-based thesis is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of London Metropolitan University for a Doctorate of Philosophy degree in Creative Writing. September 2018 1 Radhika Praveen/05039123 Vol 1 of 2 Creative Writing PhD This work is dedicated to both my grandmothers, Devaki Amma, and Saroja Iyengar. A deep regret that I could not spend much time with my paternal grandmother, Devaki Amma (Achchamma), is probably reflected in my novel. Memories with her are few, but they will last forever. For my dear Ammamma, Saroja, who has always lamented the lack of formal education in her life: this doctorate is for you. 2 Radhika Praveen/05039123 Vol 1 of 2 Creative Writing PhD Abstract This practice-based creative writing doctorate supports the creation of a novel that is in part, historical fiction, based on research focusing on the discrepancies in the perceived status of women between the pre-Victorian and the postmillennial periods in India. The accompanying component of the doctorate, the analytical thesis, traces the course of this research in connection to the novel's structural development, its narrative complexity and its characters. The novel traces the journey of two women protagonists – each placed in the 18th- and the 21st-centuries, respectively – as they reconcile to the realities of their individual circumstances. The introduction to the critical thesis gives a brief synopsis of the novel.

  • Deconstructing Masculinities in Sibi Malayil's Devadoothan
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND TRANSLATION STUDIES (IJELR) A QUARTERLY, INDEXED, REFEREED AND PEER REVIEWED OPEN ACCESS INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL http://www.ijelr.in (Impact Factor : 5.9745) (ICI) KY PUBLICATIONS RESEARCH ARTICLE ARTICLE Vol. 7. Issue.2. 2020 (Apr-June) GENDERING CINEMATIC SUCCESS: DECONSTRUCTING MASCULINITIES IN SIBI MALAYIL’S DEVADOOTHAN (2000) ARYA M. P.1, Dr. BETSY PAUL C.2 1,2Postgraduate Department of English St. Aloysius College, Elthuruth, Thrissur, Kerala, India ABSTRACT Though the representation of women in Malayalam cinema has been under constant theoretical scrutiny, their male counterparts have not been endowed with much attention. Masculinities, being an offshoot of feminist theoretical undertakings, have proved to be a profound area of research that has brought forth innovative perspectives of understanding the men on (and off) screen. This research paper is an Article information Received:07/04/2020 attempt to read the nature of masculinities portrayed in the fantasy musical Accepted: 27/04/2020 Malayalam film Devadoothan (2000) to study the influence that the gendering process Published online: 30/04/2020 has in deciding the success of a film. The theoretical framework is informed by the doi: 10.33329/ijelr.7.2.40 defining theories of hegemonic masculinity suggested by Raewyn Connell and the theory of the abject given by Julia Kristeva. The major findings of the paper suggest how ideal masculinity is ideologically constructed and accepted as the norm depending on a given cultural context, and any deviation from the norm has existence only in relation with it. Devadoothan exemplifies the negative impact that the dominance of deviant masculinity may induce in defining the success of a film.
