CLOUD STATE HOCKEY RECORD BOOK Heather Weems joined the staff of St. Cloud State University as its Athletic Director on June 1, 2012. With more than a dozen years of progressive executive experience in intercollegiate athletics and special skills in strategic planning, budget management and fi nancial planning, culture change/building, profes- sional development and training, and policy writing and implementa- tion, Weems is the sixth athletic director in school history. Prior to her arrival on campus at SCSU, Weems was an associate athletics director/senior woman administrator at Drake University from 2009 to 2012. As a senior administrator she was responsible for internal affairs Director of Athletics and oversight in NCAA compliance, academic success services, sports Heather Weems medicine, and strength and conditioning. She was the sport adminis- trator for menʼs and womenʼs soccer, menʼs and womenʼs track and fi eld/cross country, menʼs and womenʼs golf, and volleyball, with prior oversight of menʼs and womenʼs tennis. As a member of the Drake athletics senior staff, Weems collaborated with senior administration in making policy level decisions, was responsible for development and implementation of departmental leadership programming for student athletes, coaches, and staff, which included signifi cant cultural shift prescribed by strategic plan. He will receive his award on Saturday evening, May 4, during the American Hockey Coaches Association annual convention in Naples, FL. Entering Thursday afternoon’s semifinal contest vs. Yale, Bazin’s River Hawks have compiled an overall record of 28-10-2, capturing both the Hockey East regular season and tournament titles along the way. Lowell advanced to the Frozen Four by defeating Wisconsin (6-1) and New Hampshire (2-0) to win the NCAA Northeast Regional in Manchester, NH. The River Hawks enter the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center having won 14 of their last 15 games and seven in a row. On December 1, the UMass Lowell record stood at 4-7-1. Since that time, they have gone 24-3-1. Bazin has been chosen as the Hockey East Coach of the Year in both of his seasons at Lowell. This follows two years as the NESCAC Coach of the Year while he coached at Hamilton College.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by White Rose E-theses Online The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby Megan Geneva Murray PhD The University of York Women’s Studies January 2012 Abstract All-female roller derby is a rapidly growing full-contact sport played on quad roller skates, with a highly popularized punk, feminine, sexual and tough aesthetic. Utilising theories on the institution of heterosexuality, I conducted a qualitative study on all-female roller derby which evaluated the way in which derby aligns with or challenges heteronormativity. In order to approach this question, I analysed, firstly, thirty-eight interviews with spectators, and twelve with players about their interactions with spectators. Secondly, I interviewed twenty-six players about the phenomenon of “derby wives,” a term used to describe particular female friendships in roller derby. My findings relate the complex relationship between players and spectators by focusing on: (i) spectators’ interpretations of the dress, pseudonyms, and identities of players, as well as the ways in which they were actively involved in doing gender through their discussions of all-female, coed, and all-male roller derby; (ii) players’ descriptions of their interactions with spectators, family members, romantic partners, friends and strangers, regarding roller derby. Additionally, I address the reformulation of the role “wife” to meet the needs of female players within the community, and “derby wives” as an example of Adrienne Rich’s (1980) “lesbian continuum.” “Derby girls” are described as “super heroes” and “rock stars.” Their pseudonyms are believed to help them “transform” once they take to the track.
