Migration in East Yorkshire in the Eighteenth Century
MIGRATION IN EAST YORKSHIRE IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY Henry S. Woledge and Michael A. Smale Henry Woledge graduated in geography and geology at Keele University and after early retirement from a career in town and country planning has pursued his interest in local history. Michael Smale, a graduate of Oxford and York Universities, is currently working towards a PhD at Hull University, focusing upon migration into later nineteenth-century Hull. Introduction The system of relief for the needy poor in England and Wales, which operated from the sixteenth century, has left a wealth of records. A prominent element of the system, from 1662 onwards but with continual modifications, was that relief was provided by the parish where people were ‘settled’, and in the eighteenth century they were liable to be ‘removed’ back to that parish in order to obtain relief.1 The resulting documents are essentially of four types: settlement certificates, settlement examinations, removal orders and appeal orders. Certificates were provided by the parish of settlement, accepting responsibility in case of need, to enable a person to move to live and work in another parish. Examinations were made to establish where a person’s settlement was: taken under oath (but nevertheless not always truthful) they vary from the minimal (for example, 3 May 1790 John Hare. Settlement at Nunburnholme)2 to detailed accounts of relevant information,3 especially in the 19th century. Removal orders were the legal means of moving people to their place of settlement and give the date, the people concerned, the places removed from and to, often the status of women (singlewoman, wife, widow) and sometimes the ages of children. -

Hull History Centre: Papers of the Barnards Family of South Cave U DDBA Papers of the Barnards Family 1401-1945 of South Cave Historical background: The papers relate to the branch of the family headed by Leuyns Boldero Barnard who began building up a landed estate centred on South Cave in the mid-eighteenth century. His inherited ancestry can be traced back to William and Elizabeth Barnard in the late sixteenth century. Their son, William Barnard, became mayor of Hull and died in 1614. Of his seven sons, two of them also served time as mayor of Hull, including the sixth son, Henry Barnard (d.1661), through whose direct descendants Leuyns Boldero Barnard was eventually destined to succeed. Henry Barnard, married Frances Spurrier and together had a son and a daughter. His daughter, Frances, married William Thompson MP of Humbleton and his son, Edward Barnard, who lived at North Dalton, was recorder of Hull and Beverley from the early 1660s until 1686 when he died. He and his wife Margaret, who was also from the Thompson family, had at least seven children, the eldest of whom, Edward Barnard (d.1714), had five children some of whom died without issue and some had only female heirs. The second son, William Barnard (d.1718) married Mary Perrot, the daughter of a York alderman, but had no children. The third son, Henry Barnard (will at U DDBA/14/3), married Eleanor Lowther, but he also died, in 1769 at the age of 94, without issue. From the death of Henry Barnard in 1769 the family inheritance moved laterally. -

LENNY 02 2021 - Page 3 PHYSICAL CONTEXT Holmpton is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Withernsea town centre and 3 miles (4.8 km) east of the village of Patrington. It lies just inland from the North Sea coast. According to the 2001 UK census, Holmpton parish had a population of 193 which since the census will have increased to around 300. The parish church of St Nicholas is a Grade II listed building. The image below taken from Google Earth shows the site (outlined in red), in relation to the rest of the village built environment. -

Local Authority Dr Matthew Barnes Officer Department Environmental Health (Commercial) Church Square House Scunthorpe Address North Lincolnshire DN15 6XQ Telephone 01724 297336 e-mail [email protected] Date January 2016 Report Status Final Report 1 Executive summary North Lincolnshire Council’s Air Quality Progress Report 2011 identified a possible exceedance of nitrogen dioxide alongside the A160 in South Killingholme. For this reason, in October 2013 North Lincolnshire Council installed an air quality monitoring site to more accurately measure nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide and nitrogen oxides at this location. Nitric oxide (NO) is mainly derived from road transport emissions and other combustion processes. Nitric oxide is not considered to be harmful to health, however, once emitted to the atmosphere it is rapidly oxidised to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) which can be harmful to health. NO2 can irritate the lungs and lower resistance to respiratory infections. Continued exposure to concentrations above the recommended air quality objectives may cause increased incidence of acute respiratory illness in children. The main source of NO2 is from road traffic emissions. At South Killinghome the principle source is from vehicles using the A160 dual-carriage way, which provides access to the Port of Immingham, local refineries and power stations. It is also the main route to the proposed Able Marine Energy Park, a deep water quay and manufacturing facility for the offshore wind energy industry. To provide better access to the Port of Immingham and surrounding area, the Highways Agency are upgrading both the A160 and A180. It is anticipated that 1 construction will take approximately 16 months and should be completed by Autumn 2016. -

No part of this publication may be reproduced in any form or by any means without the prior permission of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council 3 4 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Introducing the Local Flood Risk Management Strategy for the East Riding of Yorkshire The Local Flood Risk Management Strategy (Local FRM Strategy) sets out what the Council intends to do, working with organisations, businesses and communities, to manage the risk of flooding in the East Riding of Yorkshire over the next 10-15 years. It is of interest to all who live and work in the area, as managing the risk of flooding requires action by everyone. It is of interest to organisations that have specific responsibilities for managing flood risk such as the Environment Agency, Internal Drainage Boards and the Highways Agency, as they are legally required to act in a manner that is consistent with it in exercising these flood risk duties, and must also have regard to it in carrying out other work they do that may affect flood risk. Water companies are also legally required to have regard to the Local FRM Strategy in relation to their flood risk management functions. Putting flood risk into context As recent times have shown, many parts of the East Riding are susceptible to flooding, and the impacts can be wide ranging and severe. -

Introduction
INTRODUCTION This volume publishes the papers and correspondence of the Hotham family during the civil wars and interregnum. The head of the family and first baronet, Sir John Hotham, is well known in the national narrative because of his critical role in denying the king entry to Hull on 23 April 1642. This episode ignited much contemporary controversy, raising the stakes in a pamphlet war between the king and his parliamentary opponents, and making armed conflict far more likely. It has attracted considerable attention from constitutional historians who have debated its legal ramifications, while political and military historians have recognized that the king’s failure to seize the large arms magazine at Hull badly undermined the royalist war effort. Yet, despite their national importance in 1642, the Hotham family’s papers have only rarely been utilized by academics. Late twentieth-century historians such as J.T. Cliffe, Barbara English, and Peter Roebuck drew upon the collection to inform their work on the wider theme of Yorkshire gentry landowners,1 but few others have been to Hull to access the archive. This also reflects a relative neglect of northern England in civil war historiography. There has been no biography of either of the Hothams, and their most recent family histories date from as long ago as the First World War. 2 This is unfortunate, because Sir John Hotham and his eldest son were extremely colourful and enigmatic figures, whose letters reveal much about the cultural attitudes of the English gentry in the 1640s. This volume seeks to redress this imbalance and restore the centrality of the Hotham family to the parliamentary cause.
