The project offers specific answers to several questions: can this novel be read through the lens of Bhabha’s theory of hybridity, and, if so, what does such a reading reveal about culture and identity in The Age of Orphans? The hybrid self is an experience wherein the postcolonial self holds the shades of two identities and cultures, namely the colonizer and the colonized. In other words, the protagonist Reza lives in a space that represents the shadows of both traditional culture and modern culture. Reza’s inner tension comes from mixed cultural identity that is represented in his conflicting imaginings, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors towards the Kurds and his wife, Meena. The present study demonstrates that Reza has a hybrid identity. The modern Kurdish postcolonial self is a mixed one whereby it cannot return to a purely original and traditional cultural perception. Some postcolonial theorists consider the human self to be the product of a static discourse, but the others think of it as the product of a flexible one. These two visions provide us with two ways to perceive the idea of culture. First, those who believe that culture is static see the capacity of any culture as limited to a specific geography and historical narrative. This limitation preserves the customs and rituals of the culture, and it also resists as unwanted the change that the second group considers to result from the dialogue between different cultures as they both acquire inter-cultural growth. This second group believes that culture is a flexible model that can be updated. Accordingly, the dynamism of culture creates an environment for cultural openness. Of course, the first view looks at any culture as binarily opposed to others. This perception conceives a culture as a unique entity. On the other hand, the second perspective views culture as a model of mobility intertwines with cultural progress. In the 20th century, a conception of the self within Kurdish culture emerged from the psychological and intellectual impacts of other cultures’ influence. Even now, Kurdish identity is in transition or tension between tradition and modernity. The notion of tradition denotes a whole and static culture for the Kurds, but modernity implies the idea of cultural dynamism and evolution due to internal and external forces that have reshaped their cultural identity. This identity crisis between two selves arises from the discrimination of the Kurds in Iran as a minority ethnic group. Since the 1920s, the Kurdish have experienced dehumanizing violence, marginalizing of indigenous ideals and practices, devaluing of minority groups, and spiritual and intellectual uncertainty. This ethnic segregation has resulted in a dilemma between 1 Kurds’ traditional image of their culture becoming an outmoded one, and a modern post- traditional picture. The conflict within the minds of the colonized Kurds results in reactions, violent and non-violent, from the Kurds, and violent responses from others that ultimately dehumanize the indigenous peoples. To avoid violence, the natives may start to yield to the pressures, psychological and political, that seek to change their worldviews, and their resulting marginalization leaves spiritual scars for them. For example, one may begin to see this situation, where the culture of the minority racial and ethnic groups have been deformed, devalued, and ignored, and another one has been assigned for them, as their best option. Edward Said’s description of “othering” helps to explain this phenomenon on the level of identity, especially as identity is constructed around power hierarchies. Said is a postcolonial theorist who describes the colonial discourse with a distinction between the self and the “other” in his Orientalism. He employs Foucault’s term of “discourse” to draw a binary opposition between the colonized and the colonizer in the nineteenth century. That binary relationship is still relevant in the contemporary political context where it produces acts of differentiation, which are then used to justify the hierarchies of power and authority imposed by the “superior” over the “inferior” during colonization.

It examines the relationship between ethics, politics and power by discussing how Kurdish issues have been shaped by the political landscape of the twenty- first century. It bridges political theory with practice and reveals policy implications for the Middle East as a region. Using the approach of a qualitative, exploratory multiple-case study based on discourse analysis, several Kurdish issues are examined within the context of democratization, minority rights and the politics of exclusion. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, archival research and participant observation. Data analysis was carried out based on the theoretical framework of critical theory and discourse analysis. Further, a discourse-interpretive paradigm underpins this research based on open coding. Such a method allows this study to combine individual narratives within their particular socio-political, economic and historical setting.

    THE CONTEMPORARY ROOTS OF KURDISH NATIONALISM IN IRAQ Introduction Contrary to popular opinion, nationalism is a contemporary phenomenon. Until recently most people primarily identified with and owed their ultimate allegiance to their religion or empire on the macro level or tribe, city, and local region on the micro level. This was all the more so in the Middle East, where the Islamic umma or community existed (1)and the Ottoman Empire prevailed until the end of World War I.(2) Only then did Arab, Turkish, and Iranian nationalism begin to create modern nation- states.(3) In reaction to these new Middle Eastern nationalisms, Kurdish nationalism developed even more recently. The purpose of this article is to analyze this situation. Broadly speaking, there are two main schools of thought on the origins of the nation and nationalism. The primordialists or essentialists argue that the concepts have ancient roots and thus date back to some distant point in history. John Armstrong, for example, argues that nations or nationalities slowly emerged in the premodern period through such processes as symbols, communication, and myth, and thus predate nationalism.     The Human Rights of Kurds in the Islamic Republic of Iran Neil Hicks, April 20001 For the past twenty years there has been conflict between Iran’s central government and Kurdish political movements rooted in the predominantly Kurdish region of western Iran. The level of violence has ebbed and flowed with peaks of serious conflict in 1979, the early eighties and the early nineties. Kurdish casualties are estimated (by the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI)) at more than 30,000 civilian dead in addition to 4,000 Kurdish fighters. The KDPI do not estimate casualties of the government side, and nor am I aware of official figures for losses in this internal armed conflict, but a figure in the thousands seems likely. Along with the dead, there have been many other casualties; tens of thousands of people imprisoned; hundreds of villages destroyed and hundreds of thousands of people displaced. The local economy of an already under-developed region has been severely damaged by the conflict, as of course has the Iranian economy as a whole. The background to the human rights situation of the Kurds in Iran is that of a conflict of similar scale and perhaps even greater intensity (given the smaller relative size of the Kurdish population of Iran) as that between the Turkish state and the PKK. If the costs of the two conflicts sound similar, the political dimension of the two conflicts are substantially different, not least in the amount of international attention devoted to them. Being an essential medium of oral narration and literature, Kurdish lyrics have had a unique attribute in becoming a vital resource for different types of studies, including Digital Humanities, Computational Folkloristics and Computational Linguistics. As an initial study of its kind for the Kurdish language, this paper presents our efforts in transcribing and collecting Kurdish folk lyrics as a corpus that covers various Kurdish musical genres, in particular Beyt, Goranˆı, Bend, and Heyran. We believe that this corpus contributes to Kurdish language processing in several ways, such as compensation for the lack of a long history of written text by incorporating oral literature, presenting an unexplored realm in Kurdish language processing, and assisting the initiation of Kurdish computational folkloristics. Our corpus contains 49,582 tokens in the Sorani dialect of Kurdish. The video accuses Iranian Shi'ites of committing many crimes against Sunnis and oppressing the Sunni population of Iran, "exporting the revolution," spreading Shi'ism, and secretly collaborating with the U.S. and Israel. The main speakers in the video are Abu Faruq al-Farisi, speaking Farsi, Abu Mujahid al- Baluchi, speaking Baluchi, and Abu Sa'd al-Ahwazi (from the Ahwaz region). The three speakers call on Iranian Sunnis to rise up against the current Iranian regime and “join the path of jihad.” The group is comprised of "Persian" fighters belonging to the Salman Al- Farisi Brigade, training in urban combat and firing at targets with images of Khomeini, Khamenei, and other Iranian leaders.1 Consistent with ISIS practice, the video documents the execution of four members of Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias in Iraq.

    Stylistic and thematic changes in the Kurdish novel HASHEM AHMADZADEH Abstract Since its rise during the early 1930s the Kurdish novel has experienced many profound changes both thematically and stylistically. This paper aims to identify the main changes up to the first decade of the 21st century. By comparing the style and theme of the early Kurdish novels with recently published ones, the paper argues that there are radical changes in both their form and theme, and argues that these changes are the result of the destruction of the pre-modern ways of life and the penetration of modernity into Kurdish societies. While internal cultural and socio-political factors have been at play behind changes in the form and content of the Kurdish novel, the “global culture” has also been effectively influential in shaping it. Despite the fact that the Kurdish novel has been influenced by the transition of the Western novelistic discourse to the Middle East, it has, thematically, been functioning as a “national allegory” following the conceptualization by Jameson of the main feature of the “third world” literature. The first Kurdish novel was published in 1935. During the relatively short period since then, compared with the four-hundred-year-old tradition of novelistic discourse in the West, the Kurdish novel has experienced a radical change both stylistically and thematically. In fact, change in the Kurdish novel is no exception to the rule. The novel in its Western context has also been the subject of profound changes. While the reasons behind the changes in the Western novel have been widely discussed by literary theoreticians and critics, there is no study devoted to the changes in the Kurdish novel.
