This handout includes information gathered by rabbit lovers and rabbit doctors to help your rabbit have a happy, healthy, long life. IMPORTANT RABBIT FACTS: Life span: 9-12 years (possibly longer) Normal body temperature: 100.5-104 F Rabbits are herbivores, so their physiology is closer to a horse or cow than to dogs or cats. If you keep the rabbit's digestive tract healthy, you keep the rabbit healthy. Rabbits are very social animals and in nature they live in groups. Like dogs and cats, they are affectionate and bond with people; therefore they should be kept indoors as part of the family The rabbit’s natural instinct is to be close to the ground and have access to a safe hiding place; this is because they are a prey species, which basically means that many other animals eat them. Thus it is not safe for rabbits to be left unsupervised with a dog or cat, or allowed outdoors in an unsecured enclosure. WHERE CAN I GET A BUNNY? Thousands of adorable sweet bunnies are euthanized by animal shelters every year because there aren’t enough good homes. Rabbits from rescue organizations are healthier, are already spayed/neutered, are accustomed to being handled, and are often litter box trained. As cute as those little fluffy baby bunnies are in the pet store, they are at a high risk for getting sick. Baby bunnies in pet stores are exposed to a lot of germs at an age when they are most susceptible to illness. -

This study analyzed outcomes for nearly 8000 cats admitted to an urban public shelter in Kentucky, USA from 2010 through 2011. While coat color overall was not an important predictor of cat outcomes, a tiered pattern among particular colors was detected. Specifically, black and white cats experienced the highest and lowest chances of euthanasia, respectively, while brown and gray cats experienced more middling chances. Orange cats’ relative chances of euthanasia were more difficult to gauge, but orange and white cats had similar euthanasia and adoption outcomes in the most nuanced model. In addition, there has been persistent speculation that the public’s interest in—and preference for—black cats might spike before Halloween due to cats’ associations with the holiday. However, the present study found that a subsample of more than 1200 entirely black cats did not experience improved chances of adoption or transfer to a rescue organization in October compared to other months. -

Chinese New Year is an amazing celebration observed by people around the world. It marks the lunar New Year, compared to the Gregorian solar New Year, and is a chance for people to come together to wish for a future filled with prosperity and peace. Streets and homes will be decorated, parades will be held, and presents will be given. Each year marks a new Chinese Zodiac, and 2018 is the Year of the Dog. When is Chinese New Year 2018? The Chinese New Year celebrations begin on Friday 16 February. The dates for Chinese New Year differ each year as it is based on the lunar calendar and normally falls between 21 January and 20 February. The Chinese New Year has been associated with the Chinese Zodiac since the Spring Autumn Period (771 to 476 BC). Why is this year the year of the dog? FEBRUARY 2018 CALENDAR The Chinese Zodiac runs on a cycle of 12 years, with each year denoting one of the 12 animals. The 12 animals are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. NATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH And 2018 is the year of the dog. Here are described the role of the zodiac animal images in Korean folklore: proverbs, sayings etc. Each animal has its allegorical form and expresses various traits of man. Dealing with twelve animals of the Korean zodiac such as rat (jui), ox (so), tiger (beom, horangi), rabbit (tokki), dragon (yong), snake (baem), horse (mal), sheep (yang), monkey (wonsungi), rooster (sutak), dog (gae), pig (dwaeji), this article represents a contribution to research in Korean paremiology in the specific field of animal idioms. Besides referring to proverbs and sayings about these animals, surely I also try to give some examples of their role and importance in the history of the Korean nation and in other genres of Korean folklore. For this article, are used both North and South Korean sources, mainly dictionaries and books of proverbs, in order to disprove the point of view that there are profound big language differences between the two Koreas. 1. Korean zodiac The Chinese zodiac signs are used by cultures other than Chinese, too. They are used in some other Asian countries that have been under the cultural influence of China and also in countries that have not been under influence of China. -

Foreword Foreword Dear Friend of Animals: People wanting to make a positive difference for animals in their community contact The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) National Shelter Outreach Department every day. Many of these people want to start a humane organization. Some of them come from areas with no humane organizations, some are dissatisfied with their local humane organizations and still others want to start a new organization with different services. This guide is intended to help you understand the complexities of humane organizations and give you the information and tools you will need to start one. The guide will detail and discuss: varieties of humane organizations from non-sheltering to shelter facilities; alternatives to starting a new organization; difficulties you will encounter starting and running a humane organization; and where to look for further information. It is important to understand that the ASPCA is not a parenting organization for local SPCA’s, humane societies or animal care and control organizations. “SPCA,” like “Humane Society” and “Anti-Cruelty Society,” is a generic term. SPCA’s and humane societies generally have no affiliation with each other nor even any similarity of policies and procedures. While “SPCA” and “Humane Society” are often interchangeable terms, “SPCA” may (but does not necessarily) imply a law enforcement capability. The National Shelter Outreach department works with all varieties of animal protection organizations around the country to help them do their job better. We provide materials, resources, referrals, advice and training at little or no cost. Each year we visit over 150 animal shelters and spend time talking with directors and staff to assist them to stay current on trends in sheltering. -

RABBIT CARE GUIDELINES Supplied by: House Rabbit Society: Wisconsin Chapter Rabbits are wonderful house pets. They are highly social and friendly and live an average of 8 to 12 years. They require as much attention as a cat or dog. Because rabbits are bred for appearance and not personality, all breeds can make wonderful companions. Choose a rabbit for his/her individual personality. The information offered here is designed to help you and your rabbit enjoy a happy life together. HOUSING Environment Rabbits are most active in the morning and evening and sleep during the day and night. This schedule coincides with that of most active families. Bunnies should be given only as much freedom as they can handle. Some bunnies can be outside their cages all day, but many need greater limits. Bunnies need 3-6 hours of exercise outside the cage each day. The remaining time is spent napping in a cage or attached playpen area. They are curious creatures and need social interaction. Place the cage where the family is active -- - family room, kitchen. Rabbits enjoy listening to people and will often position themselves to watch you. If the rabbit’s “house” is in a very active area, a small hiding area (“cave”) should be added to allow a quiet, safe place to lounge when stressed or tired. (Cardboard boxes with a hole cut in it, paper bags, and upturned milk crates all work well.) Do not keep your rabbit out of doors. There are many predators that can directly or indirectly kill a rabbit. Many insects carry diseases that easily infect an outdoor rabbit. -

We review programmes implemented at shelters aimed at increasing the likelihood of adoption. The morphology of shelter dogs plays a large role in in-kennel adopter selection, but their behaviour is also influential in out-of-kennel adopter interactions. Previous studies suggest that dogs have the ability to readily learn new behaviours at the shelter, and programmes designed to improve behaviour of the dogs can increase adoption rates. Whilst human interaction has been well-established to improve behavioural and physiological outcomes of dogs living in shelters, analysis of the effects of sensory, environmental, and social-conspecific enrichment has not resulted in clear conclusions. We also review the literature on the relinquishment of owned dogs and return rates of previously adopted dogs. Whilst owner- and dog-related risks to relinquishment are discussed, we show that there is a notable lack of research into programmes that address issues that may prevent the initial surrender of dogs to shelters, or that could prevent re-relinquishment. -
Human–Dog Relationships During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Booming Dog Adoption During Social Isolation

Previous studies indicated that owning a companion animal, such as a dog or a cat, has 1234567890():,; benefits for good mental health. Interactions with animals may help with depression and anxiety, particularly under stress-prone conditions. Human–animal interactions may even improve peer-to-peer social relationships, as well as enhance feelings of respect, trust, and empathy between people. Interestingly, it has also been shown that stress and poor well- being of dog owners negatively affect the well-being of their companion animals. However, a dramatic increase in dog abandonment could potentially occur due to COVID-19 related health, economic and social stresses, as well as due to the inconclusive reports of companion animals being potential COVID-19 carriers. Such a scenario may lead to high costs and considerable public health risks. Accordingly, we hypothesized that the COVID-19 pandemic, and the related social isolation, might lead to dramatic changes in human–dog bidirectional relationships. Using unique prospective and retrospective datasets, our objectives were to investigate how people perceived and acted during the COVID-19 pandemic social isolation, in regards to dog adoption and abandonment; and to examine the bidirectional relationship between the well-being of dog owners and that of their dogs. Overall, according to our analysis, as the social isolation became more stringent during the pandemic, the interest in dog adoption and the adoption rate increased significantly, while abandonment did not change.
