supporting our community one child, one adult, one family at a time Heart L’dor V’dor, From Generation to Generation hen Norma Neaderthal (z’l) Wpassed, we learned that Jewish Family Service was named as a benefi- ciary in her will. Her gift leaves a legacy that will help ensure the agency con- tinues to support our community long into the future. It also adds to a legacy that includes her children’s, grandchil- dren’s and great-grandchildren’s deep involvement with JFS for over 30 years. When great-grandson Dillon Aronoff began thinking about possi- bilities for a Mitzvah Project as part of bar mitzvah, all roads pointed back to JFS. His dad, Norma’s grandson-in- law, Dan Aronoff, told Dillon about his own experiences on the board of JFS and the important work of the agency. Dillon already knew part of the story because shopping for the JFS Hanuk- kah gift program with his grandmother, Norma’s daughter, Elise Straus, was a family tradition that he treasured. So, it was natural for Dillon to choose a meaningful Mitzvah project, Dillon Aronoff (right) playing games with his great-grandmother, Norma Neaderthal z’l donating games he loved to play with his great-grandmother, Norma Nead- in the community. What do you get when you cross a Passover Seder with a 12-Step meeting? he answer is Freedom Song—a Ttransformative musical about ad- diction that poses the question, “What are you a slave to?” Produced by Beit T’shuvah, a Jew- ish addiction treatment center in Los Angeles, Freedom Song was brought to an appreciative audience of teens and adults at the Gordon Jewish Com- munity Center on April 2, through the collaborative efforts of Jewish Family Service, the local congregational re- ligious schools, and BBYO. Funding for the program was provided by the Jewish Federation and a generous gift from an anonymous donor. The performance was followed by cast-led question-and-answer ses- sions. Audience members were sur- prised to discover that all 19 members of the cast are themselves recovering alcoholics. “Powerful performances”, com- mented one adult who attended. “The program was fantastic and moved me to tears,” said another. Others attested to the importance of speaking openly about the reality of addiction in our community. “This pro- gram and its topic are very important and relevant to the entire Jewish com- munity,” remarked an adult in recov- ery who came to see the performance. “We must be able to admit problems and remain as welcomed and full members of our Jewish community.” Shayna Rosenbloom, a teen who attended, wrote, “I went into Freedom Song not knowing what to expect. All I had really heard about it was that it was a group of people who por- trayed an AA meeting next to a Seder. Watching it blew away any precon- ceptions I had. It was really powerful to see these real people come up and share their own stories to a group of strangers. Everyone on the stage had gone through things that I can’t even imagine, so hearing from them made the world of addiction, something that had always felt worlds away from my life, real.” someone my age be brave enough to “I think the most powerful moment accept help from her community and of the Freedom Song was during the be willing to share her experiences discussion afterwards when we got is something that I had never seen to talk with some of the performers,” before. JFS Senior Seder

he JFS Senior Seder has become Ta highly anticipated event each spring. JFS began the tradition 9 years ago with the goal of providing a meaningful daytime Seder with all of the major components—haggadahs, wine, matzah ball soup—we have it all! Each year a different Nashville Rabbi takes a turn to lead the service—en- suring that each year is just a little bit unique. One of the constants, how- ever, is the core group of volunteers— most of which have helped at the Seder every year since the beginning. One Hannah Kayser Palmer moment attendee who drives from Henderson- ville each year for the Seder summed it up this way: “When my mother moved from a closely knit synagogue family in Miami to Hendersonville she felt as if she had lost a large portion of her Jewish identity. The JFS Senior Seder gives her back an important piece of who she is…and I simply love listening to her speak the Hebrew prayers and seeing the smiles caused by wonderful memories.” The JFS Senior Seder is held each year in honor of the late Hannah Kay- ser Palmer, who attended the first Se- nior Seder in 2008 with her daughter Lynn Barton. Hannah’s family wanted to ensure that each year JFS has suffi- cient funds to have an annual Seder so they provided resources to ensure the program’s continuity.
