Phyllonorycter Leucographella (Lep: Lithocolletinae) - a Miner of Beech (Fagus Sylvatica) ______ Issue 14 Newsletter: October 2008 ________________________________________________________________________________________ Phyllonorycter leucographella (Lep: Lithocolletinae) - a miner of Beech (Fagus sylvatica) ____________________________________ As reported in the newsletter 24 of October 2005 , Steve Hind and Roger Brereton discovered P.leucographella feeding on Beech (Fagus sylvatica) on 18.viii.2002, in Hurdsfield, Macclesfield, Cheshire (VC58). Barry Dickerson has now discovered this miner also feeding on Beech at The Coneygeare, Eynesbury, Huntingdonshire, VC 31 on 01.x.2008 and is shown opposite. These may be the first published photographs for this miner on Beech. The mine was centred over a major lateral veinand is shown in close up opposite John Langmaid confirmed Barry s identification. Caloptilia stigmatella mines (Lep: Gracillariidae) - a cautionary tale ____________________________________ Barry Dickerson was looking at the leaf of White Pop- lar (Populus alba) which had a folded leaf edge (a typical Caloptilia fold (as shown opposite). This was identified as Caloptilia stigmatella by John Langmaid.. He then noticed a bump on the lower surface of the leaf saying I picked at it carefully and inside I found the pupa, which I extracted and photographed. I then placed it back onto the leaf and put them into a plastic pot. The moth emerged a few days later and the pupa is open and split. The moth was Caloptilia stigmatella. Care needs to be taken with the identification of such mines as there is a potential for misidentification with the spread of Phyllonorycter comparella on the same foodplant. Barry says I have two mines from which the moth has emerged from one which are just blisters under the leaf and not the typical folded leaf edge which is men- tioned in the books, so it appears that folding the leaf edge is not necessarily the only means that the larva uses to pupate. In the West of Russia, Tilia cordata is the preferred host (and also where it is introduced in the East). P.issikii has not specifically been recorded on Tilia platyphyllas or the hybrid T europea, most widely oplanted in western Europe.     Issue 22 Newsletter: November 2010 ________________________________________________________________________________________ An unexpected leaf miner on White Poplar (Populus alba) _________________________________________________ On 30th October Martin Gray found a tentiform mine on White Poplar (Populus alba) at Saxilby, near Lincoln, Lincolnshire, VC54. The mine was lower surface, with the frass piled at one end of the mine (right photo) It was obviously a Phyllonorycter species and should have been Phyllonorycter comparella a known leaf miner on this host in the UK. Images © Martin Gray Wisely, Martin decided to open the mine to examine the pupa and was surprised to see that the cremaster had long spines, whereas the Populus Phyllonorycters in Britain (and Europe) have either tiny spines or no spines on the cremaster (as shown overleaf). John Langmaid was contacted and thought that the mine was probably Phyllonorycter salictella, as he had bred this species from P.alba previously. This has a cremaster similar to the one Martin found. The pupa is viable and will hopefully be bred out to identify the species. A return visit to the site where this mine was found confirmed the presence of Sallows (Salix caprea) nearby. This finding emphasises the need for caution in identifying Phyllonorycter species on Populus. The moths ideally should be bred out to confirm identity . The species inventory includes following new county records: Stigmella lapponica, Stigmella nivenburgensis (Nepticulidae), Caloptilia fidella, Parectopa robiniella (furthermore new for Burgenland), Phyllonorycter issikii, Phyllonorycter robiniella and Phyllonorycter stettinensis (Gracillariidae). Compared to the neighbouring provinces of Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang, the Cassidinae richness in Jiangxi Province is under-reported. Longnan City, a biodiversity hotspot in Jiangxi Province, was chosen to obtain the first overview of the Cassidinae beetles. The sample coverage curves for the three sample sites reached an asymptote which indicated sampling was sufficient for data analysis. A total of eight tribes, 16 genera, 59 species and 1590 individuals of Cassidinae beetles were collected. Most belonged to the tribe Hispini (1121 individuals; 70.5%), followed by the tribe Cassidini (161 individuals; 10.13%) and the tribe Oncocephalini (159 individuals; 10.0%). The remainder (149 individuals) belonged to five tribes (Gonophorini, Basiprionotini, Callispini, Notosacanthini and Aspidimorphini). The tribes Notosacanthini, Aspidimorphini and Oncocephalini were newly recorded for Jiangxi Province.

    Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 G (Botolph’s Bridge, Hythe Redoubt, Hythe Ranges West, and Nickolls Quarry) The tetrad TR13 G contains a number of major local hotspots, with Nickolls Quarry, the Botolph’s Bridge area and part of Hythe Ranges located within its boundaries. As a consequence the tetrad has the richest diversity of breeding birds in the local area, with 71 species having a status of at least possible in the latest BTO Atlas survey. It also had the highest total of species (125) in the winter Atlas survey. Sadly a major housing development is now in progress at the Nickolls Quarry site and much of the best habitat is now being disturbed or lost. Nickolls Quarry has been watched since the late 1940s, though early coverage was patchy, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. As a working quarry the site has undergone significant changes during this time, expanding from two small pits to a much larger area of open water, some of which has since been backfilled. During 2001 to 2004 a series of shallow pools were created which proved particularly attractive to waders.
