GARDEN SAFARI 2019 - 22nd and 23rd JUNE Passports from Snippers and Clippers Lyminge Friends - June 2019 Our May talk from Ian Porter was excellent. Ian told us of several Famous Murders 1811-1911 and managed to make it entertaining and chilling at the same time. Also, in May, we went to the Marina Hotel for Tea in their Waterfront Café followed by a walk around Samphire Hoe. On 5th June, our speaker will be Bob Preedy with the Story of Pirate Radio followed by lunch at the Abbots Fireside, Elham. On 19th June we are going to for a look around - taking in Tate Modern and fish and chips. On July 3rd, we are having a return visit from Colin Coe to show us some more of his excellent films, this time on Garden Visits. Please note that the programmed Garden Party is cancelled. Meetings are 10.30am - 12.30pm in the Rigden Room of the Tayne Centre. Entry for 2019 is £3.00 which includes light refreshments. We are a friendly social group & welcome new members so just drop into one of our meetings, or, if you’d like to talk to one of us first, please call 863500. Rhodes Minnis Circle Unfortunately the speaker was unable to come to our meeting in April. Instead we had an impromptu quiz which filled the time and gave us something to think and laugh about. The competition was won by Marilyn Norton with Connie Burren and Paula Peers joint 2nd and Fran Davis 4th. On 26th June we welcome back Jane Buss who is going to tell us about 'Life in the 50s'. We meet at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall at 2.30pm and visitors are always welcome. For further details please contact Marion on 862913

Editor: [email protected] 5 Tel: 01303 863737 Letters to the Editor...... I have read with surprise the “Questionnaire” concerning restricting parking outside Lyminge Food and Wine, attached to the Lyminge Newsletter. The village has only recently regained a Post Office, thanks to the support of the staff and owners of the one remaining newsagent and grocery shop. It would have been appropriate for the Parish Council to publicly thank these individuals for investing their money, time and ongoing effort for the good of the village. It cannot be easy to make a local store and Post Office pay. We seem unaware of how lucky we are to have one, and one that is open all hours with a smile. Of course the future of this local service depends entirely on the turnover generated from customers, a significant proportion of which are passing trade. However instead of announcing measures to help the local shop, the Parish Council issue a questionnaire about the possibility/probability of restricting passing trade by hindering car users from accessing the shop. I urge the Parish Council to reconsider their approach to this matter. We know that village shops exist on a “Use It or Lose It” basis. Why are the Parish Council exploring steps to diminish footfall? There will be no parking issues if the shop closes. Finally, three cheers for all the people who provide such great service in our local shop. Lets pull together and give them the support they so richly deserve. Yours faithfully, Simon Bowen

...... PROPOSED HOUSING DEVELOPMENT ON BROAD STREET ACCEPTED BY AND HYTHE LOCAL PLAN Christine Barnett, Chair of the Parish Council invited Parishioners to send the council their views about the plans by Pentland Homes to build 30 houses on the golf course by the New Lyminge Surgery and as a resident living at that side of the village, I feel it is important that we are all aware of the likely implications should this development proceed. There will inevitably be pressure to further develop on other land in the area once the village boundary has been breached. A precedent for further planning will be set and it is likely that Etchinghill and Lyminge would eventually be joined. We know only too well what happens when a small development opens the floodgates to other housebuilders. Sellindge is a case in point While Pentland Homes are ‘going through the motions’ to follow procedures they are not prepared to share any of the feedback from the open day held at the golf club in March. They have already marked the boundaries of the development and promised a few additional parking spaces for the surgery to appease them. While planning has not officially been granted it seems they are very confident that it will. There should be a very good reason to build in an area of AONB but I would suggest that this proposal is purely for speculative gain since the golf course is owned by Pentland Homes, surely a conflict of interest. Please take a look on the Pentland website and pass any of your concerns to the Parish Council at [email protected]. This will enable them to represent the views of villagers in the planning process. The District Council Election on 02 May saw us top the poll on the second highest turnout (45%) in the district. Thank you to everyone who voted and a special thank you to those who supported us and those who helped our campaign. We enjoyed seeing so many of you during the election and everyone should have received at least one leaflet from us. It doesn’t need to be an election campaign for you to contact us. We are happy to see individuals about any local issues and will do our best to help all our residents. Following the election the District Council now has 13 Conservatives, 6 Labour, 6 Greens, 2 UKIP, 2 LibDems and 1 Independent. This means that no one group can command a majority on its own and is described as in ‘No Overall Control’. As the largest single group (and the one receiving the most votes across the district) it will be for the Conservatives to try to form an executive. With such a mix of parties we are making no predictions about what may happen. Congratulations to the newly elected Lyminge Parish councillors. It’s not often that parish councils have contested elections and many parishes struggle to find enough people willing to serve. The parish of Ivychurch on Romney Marsh had no one nominated at all. There is no requirement for any community to have a parish council and quite a lot of Kent is ‘unparished’. Most parishes do not themselves deliver services and they do not grant planning permission but their views do help inform decisions and a good parish council is a real benefit to the community. Lyminge Parish Council does more than most. We thank all those who have served over the last four years and those elected and re-elected for the next four years. Several important planning matters are taking place as we write. The outline planning permission for Otterpool Park Garden Town was submitted at the end of February. There have been special briefings for the parish councils immediately affected and two public exhibitions, one at Westenhanger Castle and one in Folkestone. The application is available to read at www.folkestone-hythe.gov.uk/otterpoolpark/planningapplication Further general information can be found at www.otterpoolpark.org We both support the creation, over 30 to 40 years, of a garden town as the best way of delivering the homes and jobs we need for the district and the infrastructure necessary to support them. In April we were given a tour of Estuary View medical centre in Whitstable by its founder, Dr John Ribchester. Rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission, it serves nearly 30,000 residents and offers a very wide range of services (almost anything that doesn’t require a general anaesthetic) including a minor injuries unit. To date, it has had no problems recruiting medical staff because of the variety of treatments it offers which makes the work interesting for the staff. It is our model for the medical centre we want at Otterpool Park and would benefit the whole area. See www.whitstablemedicalpractice.co.uk Meanwhile the Places and Policies Local Plan which sets out where homes and jobs should be across the whole district was examined in public by a Planning Inspector in May and his report on the soundness of the plan is expected by the end of July. We will keep you updated on this and also return to the question of just what can be recycled and how we might recycle even more. The Rudes Are Back In Lyminge Put Sunday 28th July in your diary to see the Rude Mechanical Theatre who will be on Tayne Field again for their annual outdoor theatre. They will be performing a revival of their inspiring ‘Ikarus Inc’, a play about hopes and dreams. You won’t want to miss it! Set in the little town of Dreamville, Indiana, in the ‘50’s, a travelling salesman, Daedalus H. Gildersleeves, and his son Ikarus, sell dreams from a suitcase. Secret hopes are laid bare as they begin to fly the townsfolk up into the clear blue skies to their dreams. Hilarious, romantic, tender, searching – and laced with rock’n’roll! Meanwhile the ladies of the local Buffalos Club – the Buffalesses – enter a competition to make the biggest pumpkin pie ever to raise money for ‘the sufferin’ poor’. For Ol’ Mercy Coffin it is just the devil tempting them. But will they fly and achieve their dreams or come crashing down to the cold hard earth? Will the pumpkin pie get baked? Will they win the competition? Tickets are £17 + concessions - available from: Mike Chisnall 01303 862743, online www.therudemechanicaltheatre.co.uk or Laing Bennett. Bring a picnic, your own chair and warm clothing for an English summer The show starts at 7.30pm with picnics from 6.00pm.

Editor: [email protected] 8 Tel: 01303 863737 Pathways to the Past Exploring the Legacy of Ethelburga THE ANGLO-SAXONS ARE COMING! To celebrate the start of the dig to excavate the early Anglo-Saxon church in the churchyard, the re- enactment group Øst Centingas are making a welcome return to Lyminge on the weekend of 29- 30 June. Further details are available in the Lyminge Festival programme. Please do come along, experience what it was like to live in Anglo-Saxon Lyminge and join in the fun. There is an exhibition about the project in the Parish Church. This will be running throughout the summer and can be viewed whenever the church is open to visitors. Do come along and see what we have planned. Thank you to everyone who attended the public meeting in the church on 12 May. It was really helpful to talk through our plans for the programme of community activities to run through to the end of 2020, discuss ideas that we have received already and collect further suggestions. Ideas forms are available in the Parish Church and in Lyminge Library. Please share your thoughts with us. There is a drop-box in the Library. There is budget to help put your ideas into practice. We are also seeking to identify who is interested in taking part in the dig and what kind of activities you would like to do. We will be contacting in the near future everyone who has given us their name already, both this year and in the public meeting last year, to seek clarification on when you will be available to work on site. We need to have a reasonable idea of when people are available so we can plan the time of our professional archaeologists. Everyone who wants to work on site also needs to attend a health and safety induction first. We will be running these sessions each week. Please note that it will not be possible to work on the dig before you have attended one of these sessions. We are still waiting for formal permission for the dig to go ahead on 8 July but we hope this will be issued shortly. In the meantime, we are still fund-raising and we still need to find funding for later phases of the project. If you would like to help us, please donate through our crowd-funding website at https://www.gofundme.com/pathways-to-the-past. Please tick the Gift Aid box if you are a UK taxpayer. This will increase the value of your gift by 25% at no cost to you. If you want to keep up to date with the project in real time, then follow us on our blog at https://geopaethas.com. If you have any questions about the project, please contact Liz Coleman, Administrator at [email protected] or 863197 or Rob Baldwin Project Manager at [email protected]..

Training sessions are held every Monday evening in the village hall, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm for small juniors, and continues to 8.30pm for older juniors and seniors. Over the years we have seen many of the children from the village trying their hand at Judo. Some of the children that trained years ago, have grown up, started their own family and then brought their children to come and train. The Club is a member of the British Judo Association, (BJA) which is the main Judo body in . While we are a small village club we pride ourselves on keeping costs to the minimum, so that Judo is available to anybody and everybody who wants to try it. Judo is open to both boys and girls from 6 years old upwards and for men and women of all ages. Judo is a sport to be enjoyed, it instills discipline, fitness, respect and confidence. After any contest, be you winner or loser, you bow and shake hands. While strength plays a part, it is technique that is the key. It is worth pointing out, that some of our most talented students have been girls! During the year the club holds gradings and competitions so that progression can be achieved and tested. For juniors the cost is £2.50 per session or £20 per quarter. For seniors the cost is £3.50 per session or £25 per quarter. If you would like more details phone 01303 862946. Parents are very welcome to stay and watch and for those wanting to have a try, the first session is free with no obligation. You can also find us on Facebook
