Indoor DIVISION I WOMEN’S

Highlights

Oregon rises up from being ranked fourth to claim fourth consecutive title: LSU head coach Dennis Shaver predicted that the team title at the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships would not be decided until the fi nal event, the 1,600-meter relay. And indeed, the top three teams entered that event separated by just seven points. However, it was neither Shaver’s top-ranked Lady Tigers nor the second-ranked Kansas Jayhawks who fi nished on the winners’ podium. It was not third-ranked Arkansas, competing at home in the Randal Tyson Track Center. Instead, it was fourth-ranked Oregon, competing with a rebuilt roster, which claimed its fourth consecutive NCAA indoor title March 8 and 9. “I’m absolutely elated,” Oregon coach Robert Johnson said. “This one is probably sweeter than the others, even though they’re all sweet. This one right here, we really had to dig down deep and perform.” The Ducks claimed their only event title of the weekend when they needed it most, in the fi nal relay. However, three Oregon athletes had second-place fi nishes to help the team gain 56 points. Kansas was second with 44, followed by LSU with 43 and Arkansas with 42½. Going into the 1,600 relay, Oregon led Kansas by just three points and LSU by seven. “For us to come here and win is huge,” Johnson said. “We talked to the girls this morning about being champions of our fate. “We wanted to come in, do what we’re supposed to do and just be Oregon. If we can be Oregon, we’ll be all right. To win that 4×400 at the end, kudos to them.” (60-meter dash), Laura Roesler (800-meter run) and Jordan Hasay (3,000-meter run) were the three Ducks with second-place eff orts. Gardner and Roesler teamed with Chizoba Okodogbe and to clinch the title with the win in the 1,600 relay. Several individuals followed Oregon’s lead in defending their NCAA indoor titles. Oklahoma senior and 2012 U.S. Olympian Tia Brooks domi- nated the , winning with a championships-record toss of 63-0¾. “That’s defi nitely been a goal all year, and to get there feels like a huge weight has been lifted,” said Brooks, who won the indoor and outdoor shot put titles last year. “I feel so blessed to be able to do this. “I just changed my technique not even a week ago, so to be able to win is really heart-warming and proves I can do it in a competition.” , the 2012 Olympic silver medalist from Arizona, won her fi fth NCAA high jump championship. She secured her third consecutive indoor title by clearing 6 feet, 4¾ inches. Kimberlyn Duncan, a senior from LSU, won her fi fth NCAA 200-meter dash title, having won back-to-back indoor and outdoor titles in 2011 and 2012. Indiana State senior won her second NCAA championship in three years with a throw of 77 feet, 2 inches. led Kansas to its runner-up team fi nish by winning the and repeating her 2012 victory in the . Dart- mouth’s Abbey D’Agostino was the only other double winner, capturing the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs. Brianna Rollins of Clemson also set a new meet record in the 60-meter hurdles. Her winning time of 7.79 seconds was fi ve-hundredths of a sec- ond faster than the old record of Southern California’s Virginia Powell in 2006. 2 DIVISION I WOMEN’S—2012 TEAM STANDINGS
