I’m Glennon Doyle, author of Untamed – the book that was released at the very start of the pandemic and became a lifeline for millions. I watched in awe from my home while this simple phrase from Untamed – WE CAN DO HARD THINGS – the mantra that saved my life twenty years ago, became a worldwide rally cry. Because we experienced the hardship of the pandemic collectively, many of us finally acknowledged what was true before COVID and will be true after: That life is freaking HARD. We are all doing hard things every single day – things like loving and losing caring for children and parents; forging and ending friendships; battling addiction, illness, and loneliness; struggling in our jobs, our marriages, and our divorces; setting boundaries; and fighting for equality, purpose, freedom, joy, and peace. On We Can Do Hard Things, my sister Amanda and I will do the only thing I’ve found that has ever made life easier: We will drop the fake and talk honestly about the hard. Each week we will bring our hard to you and we will ask you to bring your hard to us and we will do what we were all meant to do down here: Help each other carry the hard so we can all live a little bit lighter and braver, more free and less alone. Before passing away on the 31st of October, 2020, Dumile had been a young virtuoso rapper welcomed with open arms by the music industry, then an outcast that sneaked back onto the scene through the back door after years of wandering (now masked), the 'go-to-guy' of independent rap during the 2000s and then some kind of Indie messiah as dubbed by Thom Yorke and Flying Lotus. Elusive, whimsical, a trickster and a money maker, DOOM rewrote the rules of rap music, rubbed people up the wrong way and paved the way for a whole generation of MCs. Over the last twenty years, Kanye West has consistently changed the course of rap music and influenced his era’s pop scene like no other. Collaborating with Paul McCartney, Rick Rubin, and Rihanna, he has both revitalized the careers of Jay-Z and Common and provided a platform for Kid Cudi and John Legend. Kanye West remains a major influence on artists such as Childish Gambino, Drake and The Weeknd. Cast yourself back to the career of an endlessly enigmatic artist. Not since the days of Bob Marley has Reggae enjoyed such a high profile. For three years, hits by the stars of North American pop have taken on a distinctly Jamaican flavour. From Beyoncé to Rihanna, via Drake or Justin Bieber, more and more pop artists have taken to superimposing their voice over dancehall tracks. Dancehall, the "club" version of reggae, was popularised in the mid-1980s by the legendary producer King Jammy with Sleng Teng, the first electronic reggae track in history. Let's take a look at this velvet coup..

THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON A THESIS IN Musicology Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC by MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ B.M., University of Central Missouri, 2014 Kansas City, Missouri 2019 © 2019 MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON Michelle Jurkiewicz, Candidate for the Master of Music Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2019 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, or anime, has been popular around the globe for the last sixty years. Anime has its own fan culture in the United States known as otaku, or the obsessive lifestyle surrounding manga and anime, which has resulted in American production companies creating their own “anime.” Japanese filmmakers do not regard anime simply as a cartoon, but instead realize it as genre of film, such as action or comedy. However, Japanese anime is not only dynamic and influential because of its storylines, characters, and themes, but also for its purposeful choices in music. Since the first anime Astro Boy and through films such as Akira, Japanese animation companies combine their history from the past century with modern or “westernized” music. Unlike cartoon films produced by Disney or Pixar, Japanese anime do not use music to mimic the actions on-screen; instead, music heightens and deepens the plot and emotions. This concept is practiced in live-action feature films, and although anime consists of hand-drawn and computer-generated cartoons, Japanese directors and animators create a “film” experience with their dramatic choice of music.

Jus Like Music & Apple Juice Break Present: Oscillations is a free two part digital compilation focussing on music by talented artists from hip-hop, electronica, neo-soul, dubstep and generally anywhere in between! Part 1 contains 20 tracks and spans just over an hour and ten min- utes of amazing, mostly exclusive music. In this booklet you will find varying levels of information on each of the artists featured. Some have detailed bios, some have back- stories for their tracks, others barely have links to their websites. This is, I think, a wonderous testament to the different types of people who have been involved with the Oscillations project, musically and otherwise. There’s also, as you will see, an array of fantastic visual art through- out the booklet. It has all kindly been created and supplied by a team of incredible visual artists - so please look out for their credits and check more of their work online. I thank all colleagues and friends who accompanied me through my studies at the Vienna University of Technology. ii Zusammenfassung Das immense Wachstum von verfügbaren Musiksammlungen in digitaler Form erfor- dern neue Zugriffs- und Interaktionsmöglichkeiten.

Hip-Hop, Ambient Music, and Genre Ancestry [12 lines from top of page, centered] by Mauro Miller [6 lines from title, centered] A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree, Bachelor of Arts, Music [6 lines from author’s name, centered] The Colorado College [3 lines from degree statement] April 11, 2021 [3 lines from institution statement] Approved by ___________________________________ Date: _____________________ Iddo Aharony, Assistant Professor of Music [6 lines from Date] ___________________________________ Date: April 24, 2021________ Ryan Bañagale, Associate Professor of Music[3 lines from 1st faculty name] 1 As time passes, the lines between different types of music have become blurred and more blurred. No longer is it simple to assign a song to just jazz, classical, or rock. Almost every day, a new genre is invented (Söderman 2004). So how does one go about making sense of this every-expanding soundscape? Well, in order to truly comprehend a genre of music, one must do a deep dive into its history and one must look to understand its predecessors. For example, one must study the blues and gospel music to fully understand rock. Likewise, anyone would gain a lot out of examining the sounds of Detroit Techno and Chicago House before attempting to write a dubstep song. In order to understand some of my favorite genres of music like trip-hop and bedroom pop, I studied their ancestors: ambient music and hip-hop. Yes, these two genres are different in many ways, but they overlap in modern music quite often and they have quite a few similarities.
