Rest of the day at leisure. • Optional dinner at local restaurant with Fado music • Overnight Lisbon Day 2 • Lisbon • Breakfast at the hotel. • Departure to Belém district to see the monuments that pay tribute to the Portuguese golden era of the Discoveries: Belém Tower (glimpse), Monument to the Discoveries (glimpse), Monastery of Jerónimos (visit to the church). • Visit to the National Coaches Museum, containing one of the most important and richest collections of coaches in the world. We will then immerse into the old Lisbon, Alfama, characterized by its white houses, labyrinthine streets, inner courtyards and dead ends. • Return to the hotel. • After-noon at leisure. • Overnight in Lisbon. Day 3 • Lisbon - Sintra - Cascais - Estoril • Breakfast at the hotel. • Departure from the hotel towards Sintra, a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site. • Discover the charms and history of the town that enchanted kings and poets. Visit to the romantic National Pena Palace. If weather permits, we will then stop at the westernmost point of mainland Europe, Cabo da Roca. On the way to Cascais along the coast, be dazzled by the seascape. In Estoril, place where Ian Fleming got the idea for the James Bond character, we highlight the gardens of one of the largest Casinos in Europe. • Return to the hotel. • Overnight in Lisbon. Day 4 • Lisbon - Porto • Breakfast at the hotel and check-out. • Transfer to Lisbon train station to take the train from Lisboa Oriente to Porto Campanha. • Arrival in Porto and transfer to the hotel. • Overnight in Porto. This is the palace that king Afonso VI (1650s) was imprisoned during his later life, as he was deemed, by his brother, too unstable to rule the country. The minimalistic gothic exterior is dominated by the two huge chimneys that rise out from the kitchens while the interior includes decoratively painted rooms that reflect the extensive history of the palace. The most famous of these rooms is the magpie room, which has paintings of magpies representing the gossiping and scheming of the queen’s ladies in-waiting. As the National Palace is in the centre of town it is usually combined with exploring the historic centre of Sintra with its numerous cafes, restaurants and shops. Collin (IUCN) 49-51 rue de la Fédération - F-75015 Paris - France - Tel + 33 1 45 67 67 70 - Fax + 33 1 45 66 06 22 Report on the joint ICOMOS/IUCN MISSION to evaluate the state of conservation of THE SINTRA WORLD HERITAGE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE (Portugal) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A mission to evaluate the state of conservation (suivi réactif) to Sintra Cultural Landscape proved unnecessary in the strict sense, for this World Heritage Site is not under urgent threat nor is it being badly managed. This mission arrived, however, at a critical point in the evolution of management of a World Heritage Site which has been defined within a landscape generally under tremendous external pressure for development. It lies in a popular area devoted to leisure, recreation and retirement and holiday living; yet, with its mountains, forests and waters, quite apart from its historical, architectural and aesthetic interests, the Cultural Landscape and its environs provide a priceless ‘green lung’ for the residents of nearby Lisbon. This report therefore discusses various issues arising from this situation and makes nine recommendations to the World Heritage Committee. 2 CONTENTS 1.
