The students examine different cultural artifacts such as visual art (popular and high culture), literature, film, documentaries, websites, music, and mass media. The class concentrates on texts published since the mid-20th century but includes works published during colonial times. The introductory section will deal with pre-Columbian religions and it will trace their evolution and cultural adaptation through the centuries. Pre-requisites: Permission of the Director of the University Honors Program or instructor’s consent. Faith, Migration and Diasporas in Latin American Culture Summer 2018 Page !1 Goals: • The course will explore the representation of topics related to faith, migration and the diaspora in the cultural production of Latin American and US Latino authors and artists. • The class will use a cultural studies theoretical framework to study the wide diversity of belief systems present in Latin America. • It will will study global religions (e.g, Christianity, Islamic, Judaism) concentrating on more localized manifestations and religious practices such as syncretism, Afro-Hispanic (including Brasil). • The class will study Hispanic fiction and film within a global context. • The class will identify the multiple dimensions of reasoning, assumptions and perspectives generally excluded from these forms of cultural and ethnic expression. • The course will emphasize student collaboration, in-class discussion and lectures. Objectives Upon successful completion, the students will be able to accomplish the following tasks: • Have a broaden knowledge of the representation of faith in Latin American culture • Discuss topics as migration and exile, otherness, memory, and the African Diaspora and the Holocaust by giving specific examples of how they are represented in literature, film, music and the visual arts. • Discuss the Latin American cultural production, as it relates to faith, migration and the diaspora using a cultural studies analytical framework. • Be able to discuss the Latin American Jewish cultural production with the context of the “other” as it relates to Latin American cultural production. Grading Policy and Distribution Grades are final and not negotiable Submitting work: To get full credit, you must submit your homework or related assignments at the start of the class on the date stated in the assignment schedule. If you turn it in late, (at any time after the beginning of class), I will deduct 50% of its original value. I will not accept late papers unless you and I have mutually agreed upon an extension before the paper's deadline. I very seldom grant extensions. Exams and oral presentations are due on the previously assigned dates. Grading policies: Assignments & Percentages 1. Class Participation & attendance: . 15% Reading, analytical thinking, questioning, challenging old beliefs, expressing one's own opinions and writing represent the main components of this course. Please, make sure to complete all the assigned reading before class so you can participate in class discussions. Attendance: I expect you to be present in all class sessions. If you don’t attend class, you’ll miss important information that will help you better understand the subject matter, the readings and to do well on the exams. You will also loose class participation points. I will deduct points from your grade for every un-excused absence, after the first two, using the following scale: ___ Three to five: 5% deduction from the class grade ___ Six to eight: a one letter grade reduction ___ Nine or more: a failing grade (F) in the class Note: Please, contact me regarding excused absences such as medical and family emergencies, jury duty, and other I could include in this category. 2.     MAY 2020 Pandemic as Pretext: Trump Administration Exploits COVID-19, Expels Asylum Seekers and Children to Escalating Danger The Trump Administration is exploiting the coronavirus crisis to pursue its long-held goal of preventing refugees from seeking and receiving humanitarian protection in the United States. Under the guise of a much-criticized Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) order, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is expelling asylum seekers and unaccompanied children without the legally required processes to countries where they face persecution, trafficking, and other serious violence. With little public debate, the administration has essentially eliminated asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. But public health is a pretext, not its priority. The CDC order has no public health rationale, according to numerous public health experts, who stress that fair treatment of refugees, as required under U.S. law, does not undermine efforts to combat the virus. These goals “are not in conflict and can be served side by side.” Yet even as the administration pushes states and businesses to reopen, Acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Mark Morgan has signaled that the agency would keep flouting its legal obligations to process asylum seekers, unaccompanied children, and others at the border. At the same time, despite escalating violence in Mexico, the administration continues to implement the Remain in Mexico policy threatening the lives of asylum seekers. Since the so-called Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) went into effect in January 2019, DHS has returned thousands of asylum seekers primarily from Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to Mexico.

The "stories" in his fiction and films tell of individuals trying to come to terms with personal and/or political issues and often lead their protagonists on journeys or quests in search of healing and identity. These quests frequently involve characters returning to places either from the past, or to the source of the trauma in order to understand and deal with the present. Budde Department of Catholic Studies Office: 570 SAC [email protected] (773) 325-1974 Office Hours: M 3-6 p.m. and by appointment Course Description: The work of John Sayles, among the best known of American independent filmmakers, has ranged across many important and controversial issues – race, economic exploitation, ethnicity, sexuality and more. While the political significance of his films is often acknowledged, his work is also suffused with religious and spiritual symbols and insights he attributes in part to his Catholic heritage (he once described himself as a “Roman Catholic Atheist”). He has received several Academy Award nominations, and received a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 1983. Sayles’ work – and how he does it – also provides insights into the conditions of cultural production and artistic freedom in an era of large-scale corporate culture industries (e.g., Time- Warner, Disney, Fox). Unlike most filmmakers, Sayles works free of studio control and oversight – he provides much of the money for his films through his work as a high-priced “script doctor” for the studios (his uncredited scripts include Apollo 13, Mimic, and many others). Sayles’ better-known films, which he has written and directed, include Eight Men Out, Lone Star, Men With Guns, Matewan, and Passion Fish. This course will explore the interplay of politics, commerce, spirituality and culture in Sayles’ work. We will watch many of Sayles’ films in their entirety, discuss and debate issues raised in them, and use Sayles’ experience as a way to investigate larger questions regarding corporate control of cultural production, the social and political significance of independent storytelling, and the ambiguous location of religion (and Catholicism in particular) in contemporary culture industries.

After years of refusing to pay war taxes, the Federal Government seized their home and sold it to pay the arrears. The film chronicles the campaign of nonviolent resistance to save their home but also explores the class and political conflicts that arise between the resisters and the family that buys the home. Two occurred in 1992, while a third occurred during the government of Vinicio Cerezo Arévalo (1986-1991). They are presented here in detail because there have been so few survivors of clandestine detention in Guatemala willing to take the risk of making their stories public. These detentions appear to have been carried out as part of a military effort to gather information and intelligence on activities of the URNG guerrillas, although the government has denied responsibility for the practice. The detention practices described in this report violate virtually every guarantee in the Guatemalan Constitution and Code of Criminal Procedures regarding arrest procedures and the rights of detainees.
